Getting the Word Out
PR Committee Meeting Tonight

June 13, 2013

6:00 pm

Parish Office at Eden

We are convening a new Public Relations Committee to help get the word out about SCF!  We had some money gifted to us for this purpose and there are many possibilities to consider.  The first meeting of this committee will be June 13 at 6:00 pm in the office at Eden.  If you would like to join us as we get the ball rolling, please contact Jessica.  We will set goals, begin brainstorming, and look at ways we can dovetail with the national church's effort to highlight the Ecumenical Catholic Communion's 10th anniversary this Fall.

Food Truck Friday

Tower Grove Park (closer to the Kingshighway part of the park)
Food Truck Friday June 14, 2013

5:00 - 8:00 pm

If you have or haven't been to Food Truck Friday, you're in luck! It's like a picnic without having to bring all that stuff. All you need is an appetite, lawn chair or blanket, and cash (very few trucks take credit cards). There is a recycle station for your trash.

Details: Get there early. Look for a yellow M&M T-shirt on a pole (that will be our spot!). We will be near the left end side of the food trucks (left side meaning grass side not street side). Nancy and Terri will be there early to get a spot. Anyone who can come early to save space would be helpful. No reservations needed - just show up!!

The House I Live In

The House I Live In June 22, 2013

After Mass

All are invited to stick around after Mass on June 22nd for a Clare & Francis movie night that ties into our social justice focus on racial and economic injustice.

We will be showing the documentary "The House I Live In," which captures heart-wrenching stories from individuals at all levels of America's War on Drugs. From the dealer to the grieving mother, the narcotics officer to the senator, the inmate to the federal judge, the film offers a penetrating look inside America's longest war, offering a definitive portrait and revealing its profound human rights implications.

While recognizing the seriousness of drug abuse as a matter of public health, the film investigates the tragic errors and shortcomings that have meant it is more often treated as a matter for law enforcement, creating a vast machine that feeds largely on America's poor, and especially on minority communities.

We will be ordering pizza and invite you to bring a salad or desert to share if able.  Please also remember to bring your own reusable dishes, utensils, and drink ware to support our ongoing efforts at caring for the environment by being mindful consumers and stewards of our resources by reducing the amount of waste we create.  See you after Mass on the 22nd for a thought provoking movie and discussion!

Thank You!

Father Dickson Communal Work of Service

Whether you were there physically or in spirit and prayer, a big heartfelt thank you to all who made our first Fr. Dickson workday a reality.

About 35 members joined us last Saturday to trim, cut, mulch and pray over the graves of many forgotten but blessed souls.

We have found a new friend in Ernest Jordan (those wishing to continue your support can see the  PDF link here or flyers in the back of church).

And most importantly, as so many paradoxes/mysteries of life, even as our community contemplated death and dying, we have never felt more alive and growing!

Thanks to all,

Sue Nauert

Pride Festival  Welcoming Catholic Communities

June 28 - 30, 2013

Show you are PROUD to be a Welcoming Catholic by joining Sts. Clare & Francis in celebrating the annual Pride Festival June 29-30.  Kick off the weekend with an outdoor movie night showing the documentary "Fish Out Of Water," which tackles the bible verses used most to discriminate against homosexuals. The film features theologians, clergy, and laity to help us understand what our faith really says about homosexuality and how we can move forward with love and compassion.  The movie will be shown on the Commerce Bank lot of S. Grand Blvd, near the intersection of Grand and Hartford, Friday, June 28 at 8:30 pm.  Bring a blanket or lawn-chair to sit on.

Then join us on Sunday, June 30 for the annual Pride Parade, which will march down Market Street this year.  Plan to be downtown by 10:00 am, but please stay tuned for exact information about where to meet.

After the parade we need volunteers to staff a booth for the group of Welcoming Catholic Communities from 12:30 pm - 4:00 pm.  If you are able to work the table at all during that time, please e-mail Jennifer Reyes Lay: jennlay331@gmail.com with your name, phone number, and times you can be there.  We look forward to celebrating Pride with you as a Welcoming Catholic Community!

Fourth of July BBQ

Fireworks
SAVE THE DATE:  Art and Frank will be hosting our first BBQ of the season at their house on July 4th.    Mark your calendars for the BBQ and fireworks viewing that evening.  More info in the next newsletter. Everyone is welcome!

Rides for Ed, Update

We now have a wheelchair at church for Ed Bilger's use, so drivers for Ed do not need to carry Ed's wheelchair any more.  This makes picking Ed up so much easier since he is able to get from inside his house to your car on his own with the aid of a cane.  Because of this, volunteers do not need to have the strength that was previously required.  We have three parties willing to pick up Ed every four weeks.  We are looking for a fourth.  Let us know if that is something you feel led to do.  Please contact me by clicking here.

Thanks,

Frank

Don't Send Your Batteries To A Landfill!

Recycle batteries

Please bring your used batteries to church and we will recycle them.  Deposit them in the box on the welcome table, and help reduce waste and pollution in our landfills.  Thanks!

When I was about twenty years old, I met an old pastor's wife who told me that when she was young and had her first child, she didn't believe in striking children, although spanking kids with a switch pulled from a tree was standard punishment at the time.

But one day when her son was four or five, he did something that she felt warranted a spanking -- the first in his life. And she told him he would have to go outside and find a switch for her to hit him with. The boy was gone a long time. And when he came back he was crying.

He said to her, "Mama, I couldn't find a switch, but here's a rock you can throw at me." All of a sudden, the mother understood how the situation felt from the child's point of view: that if my mother wants to hurt me, it makes no difference what she does it with; she might as well do it with a stone.

The mother took the boy onto her lap and they both cried. Then she laid the rock on a shelf in the kitchen to remind herself forever: never violence. Because violence begins in the nursery -- one can raise children into violence.
