Parkway United Church of Christ

2841 North Ballas Rd, 63131.

Frank is taking his Passion/Palm Sunday concern for racism on the road this year.  He will be presenting an adult education program at Parkway United Church of Christ on Sunday, March 24th, from 9:30 to 10:30 AM and repeating it from 11:00 to 12:00.  The title is "Ridding Ourselves of Racism, Something Else to Give Up for Lent."  Frank will be particularly exploring unconscious racism and actions called "micro-inequities," or little ways racism shows up unintentionally in our daily lives.  Anyone is welcome to attend; however there is limited seating, so please e-mail Frank if you would like to attend at fekrebs@msn.com.

Bread for the World
Advocacy
Never fun but much needed

Please consider calling your senators with this message from Bread for the World:

On Monday, March 18, 2013 call 1-800-826-3688, and ask for "Senator McCaskill's office." (Then, repeat for Senator Blunt's office.) You'll probably either leave a voice-mail or talk with an administrative assistant who will take your name, location and message.

MESSAGE TO DELIVER:

  • Replace the sequester with a balanced plan (smart spending cuts and new revenues) that forms a circle of protection around hungry and poor people.
  • Oppose cuts to programs that provide nutrition and help lift people out of poverty, like SNAP (formerly food stamps), WIC and international food aid and development assistance.
Special Invitation from Art Maines and Frank Krebs
Scammed
Come join us for a book signing and wine tasting to celebrate the publication of Art's new book, Scammed: 3 Steps to Help Your Elder Parents and Yourself

The book tackles the important and timely subject of scams and frauds against elders, covering both effective prevention and recovery after a rip-off. Written in an easy-to-read format and with extensive practical resources, this book will help you safeguard the elders in your life and yourself, since all of us are targets for scammers.

Art will be signing books and talking about his book in an informal setting at The Township Grocer in downtown Edwardsville, IL, on Friday, March 22 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm. Stop by to say hello, try a little wine, and celebrate with Art and Frank! We hope to see you there. For questions call Art at 314.518.1973.

Work of Communal Service Discernment Update

Greetings in Christ,

The compilation of your suggestions regarding one or more communal works of service has been completed. This document (click here to view) is organized in three sections: first, a list of specific suggestions with a brief description; second, a compilation of various comments not directed toward a specific suggestion; and third, additional information and comments regarding some of the suggestions provided in the first section.

One rule for discernment is "pay attention and go slowly." We have been paying attention to our own desires, passions and what brings us joy, and we need to continue to do this. This next step also invites us to pay attention to the desires, passions and what brings joy to others in our community - and to identify resonance among our community around one or more of these specific suggestions.

Discerning between multiple goods can be challenging, and this is why I am encouraging us to stay focused on what excites us. Each suggestion offered would be a good thing to do, however, if we trust that our deep desires come from God, identifying those specific suggestions that resonate with our deep desires will lead us as a community where God is leading us.

After due consideration, please contact me (marclar123@aol.com) and identify each specific suggestion from section one that resonates with you. All you need do is state the bold title of the suggestion. You may identify as few or as many as you wish. Please submit this no later than March 16. The hope is that a small number of suggestions will bubble to the surface as resonating with a majority of those in our community, and with those suggestions identified, we will meet for another convocation.

Peace and Blessings,

Clarence Heller

Love is what we are born with. Fear is what we learn. The spiritual journey is the unlearning of fear and prejudices and the acceptance of love back in our hearts. Love is the essential reality and our purpose on earth.
