Raffle Drawing and Pot Luck Dinner on November 10th
Do you remember the last scene in "It's a Wonderful Life"? George Bailey is in trouble and the town of Bedford Falls comes to his aid. The community of Bedford Falls chipped in what they could to help George. Even the bank examiner who did not live in Bedford Falls threw in some money to help George. It was a classic scene.
Everyone who participated in helping George felt great. You could see it on their faces and feel it in your heart. Grumpy old Mr. Potter didn't support George and didn't participate in the good feeling of the community.
Don't be a "grumpy old Mr. Potter". Take advantage of the opportunity to feel good by contributing to a great cause.Participate in the Sts. Clare & Francis fall fundraiser.

Social Justice Committee Book Study

November 3, 2012
December 1, 2012
4:00 pm
Fireside Room
The Social Justice Committee invites everyone to join us for our book study of The Hole in Our Gospel: What does God expect of Us? The Answer that Changed my Life and Might Just Change the World by Richard Stearns.
We will meet on the Saturdays above to discuss the book. It challenges us to embrace all of the gospel through the story of Rich Stearns, who discovered the full power of the gospel of Jesus Christ to change his own life. He uses his journey to demonstrate how the gospel - the whole gospel - was always meant to be a world changing social revolution, a revolution that begins with us. It is available from Amazon - new, used, or as a Kindle edition.
"An urgent, powerful summons to live like Jesus. Stearns weaves solid theology, moving stories, and his own journey of faith into a compelling call to live the whole Gospel. Highly recommended!"

National Salesian Convention
November 2 - 4, 2012
The Visitations Sisters and Oblates of St. Francis deSales are hosting their first national "Every Day Spirituality 4 U: Holy Living through a Salesian Lens" convention here in St. Louis, November 2-4. I have attended many events through the DeSales Resource Center over the past years and can attest to the practical, nurturing lessons of Sts. Francis de Sales and Jane de Chantal. Francis was the first person to write a spiritual book specifically for the laity, "The Devout Life!"
The organizers of the convention told me that the convention will certainly be an affirming and nourishing place for progressive Catholics, so if you or someone you know is interested, please check out the flyer or go to the website:
http://www.desalesresource.org/conference/index.php.
They are also willing to offer sliding scale scholarships and one day commuter fees by calling at 1.800.782.2270.

wisdom...reflection...insight...amusement
These two senators, one Democrat and one Republican, they're in the Senate dining room. And the Republican says to the Democrat... "you Democrats haven't got a clue about religion. You just don't get it. You don't know religion at all." The Democrat says, "That's not true, we sure do know about religion. The Republican says "I'll bet you $20, to prove my point, I bet you can't even say the Lord's Prayer." The Democratic senator says, "I can too! 'Now I lay me down to sleep...I pray the Lord my soul to keep..." The Republican senator pulls out his wallet and says, "Darn!, I didn't think you could do it. Here's twenty bucks."
The joke was told by Richard Land, who is a conservative Southern Baptist leader, who I disagree with on many things, but we've become friends. And he was saying "Isn't this silly, who's religious, who's not. Who's got God, who doesn't. Abraham Lincoln said it well. He said "You don't say, ever, God is on your side. You worry and you pray earnestly, to be on God's side."
The "God on our side" way leads to bad things in politics, like arrogance, triumphalism, self-righteousness, and usually bad foreign policy. But worrying if we're on God's side leads to things we need in politics, like humility, reflection, and even accountability. You see religion can lead us to easy certainty, or it can lead us to deep reflection. I think we're called to deep reflection. ...The question isn't whether our faith applies to public life, it's how. So we all agree it must and should, but the question is "how?", and it's complicated.
