MADA Hosts Successful Annual Meeting and Legislative Reception
MADA hosted its Annual Membership Meeting and Legislative Reception on January 19th in Annapolis.  We were pleased to have many members attend and had good representation from members of the Legislative body.

MADA Chairman, JP Bishop, opened the meeting with comments on Association events and news.   Once again, MADA served as a presenting sponsor of the Teacher of the Year program and has awarded the gift of a new car to the winning teacher, this year the new car was a 2016 Kia Sedona.  The winning teacher, Ryan Kaiser, a 6th and 8th grade social studies teacher from the Mount Washington School in Baltimore City could not join us at the meeting, but he sent along his gratitude for MADA's generous support of the program.

During the business portion of the meeting, we also congratulated MADA board member, Bill Aschenbach, of King Automotive Group, who will represent Maryland as our 2016 TIME Dealer of the Year nominee at the 2016 NADA/ATD Convention & Expo. Bill is a 2nd generation TDOY nominee; his father, Conrad Aschenbach was the nominee in 1990.  Bill was also recognized for his service on the Board.

We also recognized and thanked outgoing Directors, Jerry Dillard of Fitzgerald Auto Mall, and David Williams, Jr., Williams Automotive Family, for their years of service on the MADA Board of Directors.  Three new board members were approved during the business meeting.  Beginning their three-year term are the following directors: Matt Aiello of JBA Chevrolet Mitsubishi; Marc Cohen, Priority One Auto Group, returns to the board after several years hiatus; and Conrad R. Aschenbach of King Automotive Group.  Conrad is the son of Bill Aschenbach.

Two special guests also spoke during the meeting.  Deputy Secretary of the MD Department of Transportation, James F. Ports, Jr., attended at the request of Governor Hogan.   Mr. Ports assured our members that the Governor and the DOT are committed to improving the transportation infrastructure in Maryland, stating that dealers "put the people in the cars and they make sure that the roads are safe to travel."  We also heard from the newly appointed MVA Administrator, Christine Nizer.  Ms. Nizer stated that she's enjoyed working with Peter Kitzmiller and the dealer advisory panel to resolve some long-standing issues.

Following the business meeting, members had the opportunity to meet with their elected officials and to impress upon them the importance that our industry plays in the state of Maryland.   To that end, MADA has provided an updated handout with the most recent economic and sales statistics on our local industry.  For an electronic version, please Click Here to access the handout.
MADA Releases New Economic Impact Data
Did you know that dealership sales in Maryland represent 18.4% of all retail sales in the state?  Or, how about the fact that our industry's total payroll is $1.4 billion per year? These and other figures only stand to highlight the importance that the new car and truck dealership industry has on the economic security of Maryland.  To see the rest of the figures, please download our most recent Economic Impact Handout
MADAF Seeking Scholarship Applicants
The Maryland Automobile Dealers Association Foundation [MADAF] is actively seeking deserving students to apply for our 2016-2017 educational scholarships. Founded in 2010, MADAF's mission is to provide educational benefits to those wishing to pursue career opportunities which will directly benefit the Maryland new car automobile dealership industry.

2016 NADA Dealership Workforce Study Now Open
The 2016 NADA Dealership Workforce Study is now open to NADA and ATD dealer members.  The Study is the industry's most comprehensive analysis of the dealership workforce, collecting data on compensation, employee benefits, retention, turnover, work schedules, hours of operation and much more.  It aims to provide dealers with the data to make informed recruiting and hiring decisions, and help them meet their number one challenge: attracting and retaining talented employees.

Dealers can enroll as individual dealerships or dealer groups using a secure, web-based process that involves completing a survey and uploading their payroll data.  At the study's close, each participating dealership will receive two complimentary reports:
  • A customized report comparing their own dealership's data against aggregated data from peers in their region and nationally.
  • A report that provides analysis of the industry as a whole, including state-of-the-workforce and demographic trends, plus aggregated compensation, retention and benefits data for each region of the U.S.
Additionally, other customized reports providing even more data, are available for purchase.

MADA encourages our members to participate in this very useful data tool.  The greater the level of participation, the more accurate the findings will be.  Eligible dealers can enroll to participate in the 2016 NADA Dealership Workforce Study. Please email WorkforceStudy@nada.org, or call 800.557.6232 with any questions.
Revised OSHA Hazard Communication Requirements Due June 1, 2016
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has revised its chemical Hazard Communication requirements and have been phasing these changes in over the last four years. Chemical manufacturers were required to comply with the new requirements by June 1, 2015, and distributors had until December 1, 2015 to comply.

What does this mean for automobile dealerships? By June 1, 2016, three major changes at dealerships are required:

1. Chemical containers must include the new Global Harmonization System (GHS)-compliant label (signal word, pictogram, hazard statement, and precautionary statement), unless the distributor can document why the new labels are not provided.  Examples for a dealership would be chemical containers coming into the facility (e.g., gallon container windshield washer fluid) or changing the labels on existing aboveground bulk storage tanks (e.g., antifreeze, waste antifreeze, waste oil, windshield washer, and motor oil).

2. As they become available, dealerships must replace existing material safety data sheets (MSDSs) with the new
mandatory 16-section safety data sheets (SDSs).

3. Dealers must update Hazard Communication programs, as necessary, and provide additional employee training in the new requirements.  This was originally required by December 1, 2013, and selected dealerships may have already received this training.

Please note that OSHA has stated in a February 2015 enforcement guidance memo that the agency will not cite employers who are end users of chemicals, which includes dealerships rather than manufacturers, importers, or distributors, for not having a GHS-compliant SDS for a chemical, if they are not available from the distributor or manufacturer. However, as the SDSs become available, the employers must replace existing MSDSs with the SDSs, maintain them in the facility, and make them available for employees to examine.

More information regarding these new requirements is available on the OSHA website.
