MADA Hosts Successful Annual Meeting and Legislative Reception
MADA hosted its Annual Membership Meeting and Legislative Reception on January 20th in Annapolis.  We were pleased to have many members attend, as well as welcoming a large number of our Legislative representatives, many of whom attended as a first-term legislator.

During the business portion of the meeting, we recognized and thanked Tom Walls for his service as Chairman of the MADA Board of Directors.  We also recognized former MADA board member, Danny Sauro, of Tischer Acura Nissan who recently represented Maryland as this year's TIME Dealer of the Year nominee at the 2015 NADA/ATD Convention & Expo which was just held San Francisco.

Maryland's 2014-2015 Teacher of the Year, Jody Zepp, also spoke to our members during the meeting.  A government and psychology teacher at Hammond High School in Howard County, Ms. Zepp graciously thanked MADA members for their generous support of the TOY Program.  She remarked, "your gift makes it possible for me to do my jog everyday.  It provides the stability and dependability that all teachers need."  Noting that her prior car was on it's last legs, Ms. Zepp also said, "I am reminded every single day when I open that car door of this incredible gift and I am extremely humbled. I promise you that I'll continue to live to that gift every day."   This marks the 14th year that MADA has served as a sponsor of the program and has awarded the gift of a new car to the winning teacher.  This year's vehicle was a 2015 Ford Escape.

Danny Sauro Represents MD as TDOY Nominee
We wish to congratulate Danny Sauro on his representation of Maryland as our 2015 TIME Dealer of the Year Nominee at the 2015 NADA/ATD Convention and Expo which was recently held in San Francisco.  This is an honor which is only bestowed upon 55 dealers each year.  Nominees are selected based upon their business success and a long-history of community support and charitable giving.

A 1977 graduate of St. Anthony High School in Washington, D.C., he studied business at the University of Maryland in College Park. He began his automotive career at Tischer Volkswagen Honda as a technician in 1976, where he rose through the ranks to become a service advisor and than a service manager. He moved to Tischer Acura and became general manager before buying the store in 2000. Today, he is sole owner of Tischer Acura Nissan, located in Laurel, MD.

His success as a car dealer has allowed Danny to give back to his community, one of his most meaningful accomplishments. He contributes to Johns Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore, Maryland, and Susan G. Komen, among other beneficiaries. "It feels good to be able to help these great causes," he said.
MD Teachers of the Year Celebrate "TOY Day" in Annapolis

On Thursday, January 22, all 24 Maryland Teachers of the Year celebrated "Teacher of the Year Day" in Annapolis. This special day, in their honor, featured meetings with their respective legislators, a special reception by the General Assembly, and a luncheon hosted by MADA.

MADA is proud to support our teachers and to recognize the very best in Maryland; we thank them for all that they do for our children in Maryland!

NADA Issues New Compliance Guide on Federal Advertising Rules
The National Automobile Dealers Association issued a new publication today that will assist new car dealers in complying with federal advertising requirements on the sale, financing and leasing of automotive products and services.

A Dealer Guide to Federal Advertising Requirements provides examples of "bad" ads and "good" ads and chapters on 41 different federal advertising topics, such as the use of discount claims, e-mail advertising, green marketing claims, Internet advertising, satisfaction guarantees and trigger terms. Readers can access the content quickly by clicking the hyperlinked topics in the table of contents page in the PDF document.

The release of the guide coincides with recent intense scrutiny by the Federal Trade Commission of dealer compliance with federal advertising standards and follows an NADA University Online webinar on the topic that was presented last March by attorneys with the FTC's Division of Financial Practices. (To access the webinar, NADA members can log in to NADA University Online and enter the search term, "Comply with Federal Advertising Requirements.")

Since 2012, the FTC has initiated five separate rounds of advertising enforcement actions against 18 dealers in 12 states for multiple types of advertising violations, including actions against three dealers that the FTC announced last December.

The guide is part of NADA's Management Series, Driven. It is available at www.nada.org and will be included in the suite of compliance products at NADA University Online.
