Joe and Pam Alexander Named Founding Benefactors
Joe and Pam Alexander were named Founding Benefactors at the Community Foundation's recent board meeting.
According to founding board chairman Chris Russell, "Pam and Joe Alexander care deeply about this community. They had the vision to see that a community foundation could effectively and efficiently increase giving to all nonprofits and churches. They made a commitment to do everything in their power to see that a community foundation was established here. They provided $100,000 seed money for the foundation in 2009. They set up the foundation's first donor advised fund and provided the foundation's first bequest. Last year, they made a multi-year pledge to continue financial support for the foundation until it achieves self-sufficiency. At the end of the year, they went ahead and fulfilled their pledge, enabling the Foundation to set up its own rainy day fund.
Joe and Pam Alexander will always be able to point to the Community Foundation of Huntsville/Madison County and know that they provided the foundation for its establishment and critical growth. Most importantly, our community will grow stronger over the coming decades for their vision and leadership."
The Community Foundation has experienced significant growth since the Alexanders' made their initial contribution. Watch the video below for a brief retrospective on our growth.

Sandra Moon Memorial Fund Established
The Community Foundation of Huntsville/ Madison County has set up a fund to honor the memory of Sandra Moon.
"We are establishing the Sandra Moon Memorial Fund in order to generate money to address critical community needs. Sandra cared deeply about this community. It was to her, as it is to so many, her adopted hometown. She worked to make it better in many, many ways. This fund will carry those efforts forward," stated Bob Ludwig, Chairman of the Community Foundation Board.
Donations may be made to the Sandra Moon Memorial Fund and mailed to the Community Foundation of Huntsville/Madison County at P. O. Box 332, Huntsville, Alabama 35801 or dropped off at our offices at the Chamber of Commerce, 225 Church Street. You may also visit our website if you would prefer to make an online donation.
Sandra Moon Remembered
The Community Foundation Board of Directors is sad to announce the passing of Sandra Moon, one of our founding board members. Sandra was a servant leader and she reflected the best in leadership. She listened to the community and understood our needs. As a founding board member, she helped establish the Community Foundation of Huntsville/ Madison County, an organization that would benefit all of the citizens of the area through philanthropic giving. She listened with the ear of empathy to those around her and made her priorities clear. Her foresight and stewardship held our trust. She was persuasive in speech and demeanor; clearly stating what must be done. She demonstrated an awareness that recognized our differences, celebrated our diversity, and brought healing to our community. Sandra understood the vision of the Community Foundation and worked tirelessly to bring it forward. We will miss her counsel as she was committed to building community. A true public servant has passed.

Turning Retirement Assets into Charitable Good | | |
There is good news for Community Foundation donors in their 70s and for the communities and causes they care about. A recently-extended law makes it possible to give individual retirement account (IRA) assets to charity through 2013, free from federal tax. Prior to 2006, all lifetime distributions from IRAs were taxed-even those given to charity.
As such, our donors can give far more with less. This may be an attractive giving option for you if you are:
- Over 70½ and now receiving minimum IRA distributions but do not need the extra income
- Interested in making a significant lifetime gift to impact your community
The Pension Protection Act of 2006 permitted individuals to roll over up to $100,000 from an IRA directly to a qualifying charity without being taxed. On January 2, 2013 President Obama signed into law the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012, extending this unique charitable opportunity through 2013. Single and married individuals 70½ and older are eligible to give in this way from their individual retirement accounts.
Using IRA assets to make a gift during your lifetime, as opposed to giving via bequest in your will, enables you to experience the joy of making a major gift. "We're ready to help our donors take advantage of this legislation and make gifts during their lifetimes. Our personalized service and local expertise helps donors address the issues and causes most important to them," said Lynne Berry, Executive Director of the Community Foundation of Huntsville/Madison County.
