Year End Appeals
All of our board members and staff here at the Community Foundation of Huntsville/Madison County wish all our fellow non-profits much success with their year-end appeals. According to the Chronicle of Philanthropy, 60% of gifts to charities and non-profits are given within the last six weeks of the year. We have a myriad of worthy causes and a large number of agencies to address them. How is it possible for someone to decide which of the many requests to support? It's part of our job here at the Community Foundation to help folks who have not yet identified their charitable interests. We start out by using these seven simple steps:
1. Make a list of the things you value most in life. What are your interests within a particular field of interest? How have these changed over time?
2. Think about organizations and causes that you have supported in the past, through your financial contributions and volunteer activities. What was important about this? What made you feel the best about giving and why did you feel rewarded?
3. Ask yourself where you could make the most difference with your resources. You may have a list of 20 organizations that you support, but where can you make the most impact?
4. Decide how much you have to give. Are there other ways that you could give beyond financial resources? We can explore the different types of assets that you could give.
5. Decide when it will be best for you to give. We help you determine if this is a good time for you to invest some of your money for future giving; you can still give money away today as well.
6. Choose what you want to support. If you are unsure about this, we can help. We discuss how your gifts could be pooled with other donors to fund projects that might otherwise go unsupported. We also suggest ways to support your field(s) of interest with your time and expertise.
7. Speak with us about how to give. You have many options. You might also explore legacy planning that will make gifts to the community after your lifetime.
Please contact us if we can be of any help to you in getting started. And one more thing - the Community Foundation would welcome a gift from you. We are just a little over a year old. We expect to be self-sufficient within the next two years. Until then, though, we could certainly use your support. You may donate online at www.communityfoundationhsv.org or directly by mailing a check to our office. Thank you for your interest in our organization. We wish you a very merry holiday season and a healthy and happy 2011.

| New Tax Law May Apply to Your IRA | | |
Do you have an IRA? Are you 701/2 years of age or older?
Within the new tax laws recently signed by the President is a provision a pplying to your IRA. The Pension Protection Act of 2006 permitted individuals 70 1/2 and older to take tax-free distributions from their IRAs of up to $100,000 per taxpayer per taxable year if they "rolled them over" directly to a qualifying charity. This provision has been extended. You may make your 2010 distribution as late as the end of January 2011. You must make your 2011 distribution within 2011. If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact your financial planner or the Community Foundation office.

Community Foundation Adds Donor Advised Fund
| | |
The Community Foundation of Huntsville/Madison County recently added to their portfolio of donor advised funds. Mervin and Carmelita Budge established the Budge Family Fund.
According to Lynne Berry, Foundation director, "These caring donors are interested in arts and culture, community development, civic affairs, education, and supporting faith-based organizations. The community foundation will invest the monies in this fund. All interest it earns accrues to their fund while they consider their giving options."
"The Community Foundation's board and staff are very grateful to these and other donors who are making it possible for us to fulfill our mission of serving as the catalyst to create legacies of giving, " stated Chris Russell, chairman of the board of directors.

| Message from our Development Officer | | My first 6 months with the Community Foundation of Huntsville/Madison County have been inspiring. This organization is led by amazing individuals who are dedicated to growing the philanthropic efforts of our community. Every day I am encouraged when I meet others who share this commitment and who believe that giving is necessary for the continued health and growth of Huntsville and Madison County.
My role at the Community Foundation is to maintain donor accounts, manage financial operations, create marketing strategies, and provide general support to our Executive Director. I am excited to be a part of an organization that will have a lasting impact on our community for years to come!
Happy Holidays!
