Student Services Group Meeting

The Student Services Parent Group is a collaborative group of parents and staff dedicated to serving the unique social and emotional needs and learning differences of students in Portola Valley School District through the activities of the Student Services Group.

The 3 overarching goals of the group are:
  • Curriculum: Ensuring that the curriculum is delivered in a way that works for each student and that the environment on each campus focuses on inclusion, where possible.
  • Communication: Improving communication from school to home and home to school to enhance each child's learning experience across environments.
  • Culture: Encouraging a culture that accepts and celebrates all children where they're at now.
  • Knowledge Sharing - Providing a parents-only forum off campus for sharing parenting knowledge outside of the school environment, eg sports teams for kids with certain challenges, special diet knowledge, etc.

The group meets several times a year with parents and district staff and teachers. There will be a parent-only coffee facilitated by Amod Setlur (Student Services Parent Group representative for 2015-16 school year) and hosted by Sarah Wernikoff at her residence (145 Bear Gulch Drive, Portola Valley) on May 6, 2016 between  8:30 AM-9:30AM to provide an opportunity for parents to network with other families, and to discuss what's working well and what needs improvement so the group can work collaboratively with district administration.
Important: Please RSVP  [email protected]  if you plan to attend so that we may have an accurate headcount for planning purposes.

Ormondale's fourth annual Farmers' Market is approaching at the end of this month.  Plan to be at Ormondale's bus stop area on FRIDAY, MAY 20th from 4:00-6:00 to shop for plants, crafts, garden products, bathroom botany, food, and fun items.  All proceeds will go towards maintaining and growing our school garden.

Does your family or child have a desire to sell homemade wares, crafts, or goods right from your own garden?  Why don't you rent a booth at our event?  All we ask is for you to make a donation to our garden. If anyone wants to sell items from their own garden and have a booth, please contact any second grade teacher so that we reserve you a space.  It only happens once a year, so make sure you plan ahead and mark your calendars!

PTO invites all PVSD parents, staff and community members to come see "SCREENAGERS: Growing Up in the Digital Age" on Thursday, May 5 in the Corte Madera MUR.

Screenagers is a recently released documentary gaining national attention which explores how tech time impacts kids' development and also offers solutions on how adults can empower their kids to best navigate the digital world to find balance. Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw what was happening with her own kids and began a quest to uncover how their use of technology might impact their development. As with her other two award-winning documentaries on mental health, Ruston takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Read more at: www.screenagersmovie.com

This film is being presented as one point of view on a complex issue, with hope to inspire thoughtful conversation within our school community and in our homes. There will be a brief facilitated discussion after the movie to share initial reactions to the material. Middle school students and older are welcome to attend with their parents. Limited seating is available, so be sure to reserve your tickets online.
