Art in Action Needs Volunteers

Help with Art in Action for Your Child's Classroom!

Kick-off meeting and art room prep is Friday, September 4th, right after drop-off, in the Ormondale Art Room (room 25).

Do you like paint and getting messy with kids? Do you like to talk about art and hear the unfiltered art critique that only a child can provide? Lessons based on an art masterpiece typically occur on a monthly basis and can be taught by a teacher and parent working together, or by one parent working with helpers (so you can easily sign-up to be a helper!). The children look at an art masterpiece, learn about the artist and how the piece was made, and then create their own masterpieces. A detailed lesson plan and an amazing website with videos and tutorials are available to assist in preparing. No experience necessary. This is a great program to become involved with as it carries through all 4 years, teachers really appreciate any level of help with the art lessons and the kids LOVE it!!!!!

A fun group of existing volunteers is already in place and the more the better! To get involved, or gather more information, you may contact Kim Zamboldi ([email protected]) or speak with your teacher directly.

Kids' Vision Math Program for 3rd Grade Girls

Kids' Vision is inviting Ormondale's girls in 3rd grade to participate in an after-school Math Program at Tesla Motors.

Stanford Math Education Professor Jo Boaler and Art in Action are partnering with us to keep this program a favorite in the hearts of our participants. The program lasts 10 weeks and takes place on Thursdays from 3 pm to 4:30 pm at Tesla Motors headquarters, 3500 Deer Creek Road, Palo Alto, CA. It takes approximately 12 minutes to arrive there from Portola Valley's schools. We start onSeptember 17th. Carpooling is encouraged.

Kids' Vision is a nonprofit organization, and we are unique in many ways:

-We develop our own activities with the participation of high tech employees. For example, our Math activities at Tesla Motors show girls how Tesla uses fractions, estimation, geometry, algebraic thinking, and data and measurement.

-We are a STEAM program. In the high tech industry Art/Design is tightly coupled with Science, Technology, Engineering and Math - the STEM subjects. We use design thinking to show girls how to solve problems. Another nonprofit, Art in Action, is partnering with us to bring Art into our program.

-During our program girls learn how STEAM is applied in high tech companies. Equally important are the learning attitudes that we help our girls develop: growth mindsets are an important part of our program.

-We work with an average of 40 high tech employees per program, who act as mentors and role models for our girls. Since our activities aim at showing how STEAM is applied, the best people to facilitate those activities are the ones with experience applying STEAM in real life.

Kids' Vision favors the participation of low income participants and girls who can benefit from our program regardless of their ethnicity or income. We ask teachers to participate in our selection process, which includes an evaluation of the girls' mindsets (growth/fixed mindset). While sponsoring a girl can be covered by a $378 tax deductible donation, we encourage your additional tax deductible donations which will be applied toward sponsoring additional low income participants! As a bonus, with a donation of $756 or more you can join an exclusive VIP tour of Tesla Motor's factory at Fremont. During the tour you will witness intelligent robots building slick electric cars in a factory straight from the future, and the rigorous quality testing that each vehicle must undergo before hitting the road.

You can ask questions or request your daughter's participation in our program by emailing Maria Clrier at [email protected]. Let me know how much you want to donate, or if your daughter qualifies as a low income participant. Please click here to see what is considered low income.
