Ormondale's Scholastic Book Fair Is Here!

Ormondale's MUR has been transformed into a "reading castle" full of exciting titles for all ages. For kids, you will find sections dedicated to specific lexile levels, interest areas, the common core, and award winners. For adults, you will find quality literature, best sellers, and cookbooks. This event is the sole fundraising source for PVSD's libraries - so while you stock your bookshelf at home you are ensuring our students have the latest and greatest titles at school too.

The fair will be open before, during, and after school Mon Sep 29 through Fri Oct 3. Children will be visiting the book fair with their classes and are free to come by during recess and lunch.

This week we have two special events planned:

  • Tue Sep 30, 5:00 -7:00 pm: A Night with the Knights. No need to make dinner - purchase dinner and dessert from two amazing food trucks. Eat, shop the book fair, and enjoy special story times with Principal Keegan and Superintendent Gonzales. Expanded selections for older students (4th - 8th grade) will be featured at this event.
  • Fri Oct 3, 7:45 - 8:15 am: Dad's Breakfast. Dads (or moms), bring your kids to school early, grab a bite to eat and hit the book fair for a last shopping spree before it closes. This annual event is always popular with the kids so make sure you put this in your calendar now!

Fair Hours:

Mon Sep 29, 7:45 am - 4:00 pm

Tue Sep 30, 7:45 am - 3:30 pm and 5:00 -7:00 pm

Wed Oct 1, 7:45 am - 3:00 pm

Thu Oct 2, 7:45 am - 4:00 pm

Fri Oct 3, 7:45 am - 1:00 pm

Ormondale Turkey Trot
Ormondale Turkey Trot (1K and 5K Run/Walk/Relay)
Sat Nov 15
8:00 - 11:00 am

It's time to start training and preparing your athletes for the big race! This year's Turkey Trot will be held on Sat Nov 15. Kids love this event! Parents and siblings can run too. The Turkey Trot is a family event for our community that promotes health and introduces children to athletic competition in a friendly spirit.

This year, four students (one from each grade K-3) will have their artwork featured on a reusable shopping bag. Students will be bringing home a form for the Turkey Trot Artwork Contest in their homework packages. Winning artists will also receive a $25 gift certificate to Kepler's Books in Menlo Park. Please submit artwork to the Turkey Trot box in the Ormondale school office by Fri Oct 10.

Kari Rust and Hayley Leinfelder are heading up our lunchtime training program. This will begin Thu Oct 16 and will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays during recess. Children train by running laps around the playground field. Children will record their laps on cards to track their progress.

Stay tuned for instructions on how to register for this event. To volunteer or questions? Contact Karen Urbanek or Kari Rust

Help Our Schools While Shopping with Amazon & eScrip
Each year the PVSD PTO pays for classroom supplies for every student in the district using funds raised through the eScrip and Amazon.com programs.

Your direct purchases at Amazon.com also support our programs, teachers, and children. Simply click here: Amazon.com, then bookmark that page, and make sure you click that bookmark every time you shop with Amazon.com. You must enter the website through this specific link. It's that easy. Portola Valley School District PTO will receive a minimum of 4% of every purchase made through this method and, aside from the extra click, you should see no difference in your shopping experience. Don't forget to bookmark the new page for future purchases.

All you need to do to help is to go to
www.escrip.com and register
your credit cards and Safeway Club Card (if you have one). Please make sure to direct donations to the Portola Valley School District
PTO.
Book Drive for Primary School on Caribbean Island, Nevis

Help us collect books for a book drive benefiting the St. Kitts-Nevis primary school on the small Caribbean island of Nevis. The primary schools on this island are struggling and there is a great need for all sorts of material resources. There are no computers or even a library. We are collecting geography books, books on ecology, science (i.e. marine biology would be appropriate for an island nation; earth science, physical science, astronomy/space), math, readers for ages 6-11, animals, and language arts.

The days of the book drive are Wed Sep 24 thru Fri Oct 3. Large plastic boxes with a sign that says, "BOOKS FOR NEVIS" will be located in the CMS Library and at the Portola Valley Library. Questions? Email Claudia Mazzetti

Summit High School Open House

96% of Summit's 2014 graduates were accepted to a 4 year college.  Summit students graduate from college at twice the national average.  In 2014 US News and World Report named Summit #25 in the US for charter high schools.  In 2013 Newsweek named it as one of the top three high schools in all of California.  Summit was the only high school featured in the movie, "Waiting for Superman."

It is ranked #3 in the state of California for serving students with disabilities.

Summit prepares a diverse student population for success in college, career and life, and to be contributing members of society. How do we do that?  Join us for our Open House on Wed Oct 1, 7:00 pm at Summit Prep Charter High School at 890 Broadway in Redwood City.

Three other open houses will be held during this school year: Tue Nov 4 at Everest High School at 455 Fifth Ave. in Redwood City (corner of Middlefield and 5th), Thu Dec 4 at Summit Prep (890 Broadway/ RWC) and Sat Feb 7 at Everest High School (455 5th Ave.)
