Math Coffee Chat Presentation Posted
Thank you to all the parents able to attend our second math coffee chat. I have posted my presentation as a PDF and also a one page version of the grades 6-8 Common Core Math Pathways. For those unable to attend, please know the change to the pathways will affect incoming 6th graders and begin in the Fall of 2014. Incoming 7th and 8th will continue on the existing pathways (slide 7, brown). Please let me know if you have any questions.

We look forward to implementing common core and continuing to strive to provide the best possible eduction for our students. Thank you for your support.

Ormondale Field Day June 6
It's that time of year again to begin thinking about Ormandale's Field Day!  Ormondale's Field Day will be held Friday, June 6th, from 9:00-11:00.  Please send your children to school ready to be active!  They should wear sturdy, athletic shoes, a hat, and plenty of sunscreen! Also, have them bring a water bottle with their name on it.  Any parents who are interested in helping out at Field Day this year, please click on the SignUp Genius link below.  Please note, there is one link for Kindergarten and 1st grade activities, and a separate link for  2nd and 3rd grade activities.  If you have any questions, please contact Tim Cullinane, Ormandale Physical Education teacher at [email protected] .  Thanks!
Ormondale Lost and Found
The Ormondale Lost and Found will be cleaned out and donated to charity on Wednesday, May 21st.  Please take some time to visit the area and claim any items that may belong to your family!  All items will be folded and on display the before both the morning and evening productions of Flat Stanley.  Afterwards, they will be gathered for donation.  Thanks for helping us clean up this area!
The Farmers Market is Here!
The second graders of Ormondale have been working hard on their Pumpkin Palace garden and have been making beautiful decorations.  To start, Mrs. Wong's investigative learning group has made paper, cards, pinwheels, and signs.  Next, Mrs. Grech and Mrs. Clark's group had painted pots, posts, cans, had decorated hats, and created art.  Then, Mr. Rickert's group made birdhouses and downspouts.  Last, Mr. Ahlbach's group was in charge of publicity and making scarecrows.  We will be selling these items at our Farmer's Market on Friday, May 30th from 4:00-6:00.  We will also have food trucks, musicians, and various other booths.  Profits will be going to support our school garden, and any left over food items will go to charity.  If anyone wants to sell items from their own garden and have a booth, please contact any second grade teacher. It only happens once a year, so make sure you come and enjoy yourself.  Don't forget because it's that special!

Summer Math Boost
Two local math teachers are offering online math refresher courses this summer to help students enter Algebra I and Algebra II with solid skills and increased confidence.  Enrollment includes access to lessons taught by video, a binder of helpful materials, and access to the teacher and other students in an online help forum throughout the summer.  It's the best of all worlds--students can work at their own pace, at any time or place, but they also have access to and support from local teachers who know exactly what is expected in the next math class.  For more information or to enroll, please visit www.clearawaythecobwebs.com

Starfire Summer Programs

The Starfire summer programs are a fun, creative, engaging, challenging, and supportive experience designed to ignite your child's interest in math, science, coding, and art. Starfire teacher-coaches encourage imagination, creativity, inquisitiveness, and curiosity to explore the fun and exciting connected worlds of math, science, coding, and art. Starfire teacher-coaches train students to think like mathematicians, scientists, engineers, and artists. Student teams will engage in creative endeavors where they will utilize logic, reasoning, and critical thinking to solve meaningful "real world" problems through hands-on group activities designed to foster teamwork and leadership.

Starfire teacher-coaches will inspire your child to grow. Your child will be challenged to stretch beyond their comfort level and they will grow from the experience. The Starfire summer program experience is designed to encourage a growth mindset, persistence, perseverance, and resilience leading to inner-confidence.

M-A Families Volunteering Opportunity
Get familiar with M-A by volunteering with the Admin Support Committee - Is your 8th grader attending Menlo-Atherton High School next year? If so, please sign up to be on the administrative support volunteer list. There are no specific obligations. When the M-A Administration needs parent volunteers, we send out an email. If the volunteer opportunity fits in your schedule, you sign up; otherwise no need to respond.

A sampling of events that use lots of parent volunteers are Arena Check-In, textbook distribution, schedule distribution, AP sign-ups, and AP test proctoring. Volunteering for Administrative Support a few times a year is loads of fun and a great way to meet other M-A parents and find out what's happening at M-A. To be added to the list, please add your contact information through this form:  M-A Admin Support Committee. Thank you and welcome to M-A!
