Frederick's Follies This Friday
Are you prepared for this year's Frederick's Follies show? Mr. Frederick's fifth grade class, the Falcons, local students and a parent, are eager to perform at the CMS auditorium for the public on May 9, 6:30. If you haven't been to a Frederick's Follies production, you can expect dazzling musical performances, acting, and a few surprises. This year's 3-act play, "Roar", is about a young girl, Royal, who must learn how to cope with bullying from the help of her parents, siblings, and a host of rock bands. Included in this year's show are The White Stripes, The Brady Bunch, Abba, Madness, and the B-52s. Refreshments and baked goods will be sold at the concession stand before the performance and during intermission. Come early and grab a good seat. You won't want to miss the community event of the year!
Math Coffee Chat Presentation Posted
Thank you to all the parents able to attend our second math coffee chat. I have posted my presentation
as a PDF and also a one page version of the grades 6-8 Common Core Math Pathways. For those unable to attend, please know the change to the pathways will affect incoming 6th graders and begin in the Fall of 2014. Incoming 7th and 8th will continue on the existing pathways (slide 7, brown). Please let me know if you have any questions.
We look forward to implementing common core and continuing to strive to provide the best possible education for our students. Thank you for your support.

- 5th graders are using weekly Genius Hours to foster creativity through passion-based learning.
- 5th graders are engineering plausible alien species using knowledge of celestial locations and correlating earth biomes.

Spring School-wide Musical: Flat Stanley!
Wednesday, May 21 at 8:30 AM and 6 PM
Please plan to attend either the morning performance at 8:30 AM or the evening performance at 6 PM. Your student will perform at both. Every student in the school is part of the show. Over 80 students auditioned and have been attending rehearsals to play a particular role. Each grade will also be featured in a particular scene, singing a song they have spent time rehearsing in music class.
Our aim is to pull costume pieces from what families already have at home and minimize cost for all. Please keep in mind that students will be seated on the MUR floor (as they would be during an assembly) when they are not performing. Comfortable and manageable clothes will help them be better able to enjoy the show. Students who auditioned for particular roles will be sent a separate email regarding their costumes.
- Solid bright color shirt
- Dark pants or jeans
- Students will decorate their own bird face/visor in class (red, yellow, blue, purple, pink or green); shirt can match their visor but does not need to
1st Grade: ENVELOPES
- Black or dark color shirt and pants
- Students will decorate their own envelope costume in class that will hang on their chest and back
2nd Grade: HOLLYWOOD
- Sparkly "glitz" and "glam" clothes for the girls; sequins, glitter...think award-show flash
- White button-down collared shirts for the boys with pants
- Big sunglasses for all, worn up on their heads
3rd Grade: HAWAII/BEACH
- Tropical shirts, shorts, sundresses, grass skirts, leis, sunhats, etc.
- Please no swimsuits/bikinis, even with clothes underneath
We have extra beachwear and can help with other costumes if you don't have these items at home. Please contact Denise Schectman (firstname.lastname@example.org
) to discuss, and we'll help you borrow or find what you need!
Lending a Hand
There are still several roles for parents to play--volunteering your time, lending items from home to be used in the show, or helping to make costumes and props. If you want to help, see the sign ups:

CMS 8th Graders Score High
Congratulations to the Spanish language students from Corte Madera School who attained national recognition for excellent performance on the 2014 National Spanish Examinations.
The National Spanish Examinations are administered each year in grades 6-12, and are sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. Students complete a two day online assessment and earn scores for achievement as well as written and auditory proficiency. Awards are granted to those students whose performance is ranked nationally.
This year, more than 154,000 public and private school students participated in the National Spanish Examination. 80% of the CMS students who attempted the exam received national recognition!
"Attaining a medal for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious," said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, the National Director of the Exams, "because these exams are the largest of their kind in the United States."
Portola Valley School District has been using these exams to assess graduating 8th graders since 2009 and CMS students have consistently scored well. This year's students were taught by Karen Reis and Anthea Shands-Serret.
CMS Swim Meet
Yes, Corte Madera has a swim team, and we would love it if your
son/daughter would participate in the one and only event of the season,
namely the SSIL swim meet at Woodside Priory School on Friday, May 9th after school.
Whether your CMS student is a PASA swimmer, summer team swimmer or simply likes to swim, we want him/her on the team!
The weather will be warm, the snacks will be yummy, and the fun will be guaranteed.
We are competing against Hausner School and Wooside Priory School.
Here are the details:
- Swimmers are to arrive at 3:15 pm for sign-ups and warm-up.
- Swimmers can pick three to four events (100 Free, 50 Butterfly, 50 Breast, 50 Free, 100 IM, 50 Back, 200 MED Relay, 200 Free Relay)
- The meet will begin at 4 pm and is estimated to finish at 5:30 - 6pm.
This event coincides with Mr. Frederick's Follies. If this causes a conflict, your
swimmer can always sign up for the first events only.
Questions? Do not hesitate to ask.
