Student Safety Assemblies

Friday, November 14

This Friday the Oakwood Middle School schedule will be quite different with many differing learning opportunities happening for our students.  Each student will be taking their I Ready Math and Language Arts Online assessments, attend a student safety assembly, and work with their core teachers on an activity.

The student safety assembly involves both online safety and self harming.  We are very excited to have James Knight from the Prosecutors Office and Carol Vesley from the Canton CrisisCenter. These two professionals are extremely knowledgable and will address real issues our teens are dealing with today. James Knight will be discussing social media, sexting and cyberbullying.  He will also address the legal ramifications and consequences individuals will deal with who engage in some of these serious negative behaviors. Carol Vesley will address resiliency and coping skills. She will discuss the importance of these two things as well as helping them understand how to apply them in their life.

These sessions will be repeated for parents at our Soaring Spirit Night during our Winter Conferences.

All students will need ear buds for tomorrows online testing.  We will be running this to mirror our state testing that will begin in February.  Ear buds are available in the school store for $1.25.

Dancing with the "STARS"
Friday, November 14
7:00 PM at GOHS

Several of the Oakwood staff members have been putting in extra time getting reading for the Just Plain Dance Competition.  This will be taking place this Friday at GlenOak High School at 7:00 PM.  Tickets for the event are $10 and support the Plain Local Center for the Performing Arts.  Dancing in the event are:
Mr Matthews and his daughter Carolyn
Ms Williams and Mr. Easterling (GW Assistant)
Mr Adkins and Mrs Downing (Middlebranch Principal)
Mr. Julian and Ms Kline ( Frazer Principal)

We would really love to have the winner come from the Oakwood staff.  Your support is greatly appreciated.

8 Green and 8 Gold Win CyberMission Award

Congratulations to the 8 Green and 8 Gold Community teachers for winning a considerable financial award from the Army Educational Outreach Program.  Dollars from this will help our students complete their E Cyber Mission projects with greater ease.  This money will be used to support student launch trips, purchase supplies,  and gain more technology which will allow our students to communicate with professionals in the workforce.  CYBERMISSION is a web-based Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics competition for 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th grade teams.

Students in 8 Green and 8 Gold are working in groups of four researching a problem in our area and coming up with a solution.  Students have just begun the research component and will begin full force with the project in their science classrooms in December.

Moriah Clay recently earned her Girl Scout Silver Award.  Moriah is a member of GSNEO troop 60770 and is an 8th grader at Oakwood Middle School.  Her project consisted of learning how to knit, making scarves, and delivering them to shut-ins. In addition, Moriah also worked with Brownie troop 1043 teaching them how to knit.

Dylan Harper Travels For Mission Trip

Dylan Harper went to Quito, Ecuador on a mission trip.  They went there and to meet the family that they are sponsoring.  While there they worked on building a playground help paint the school.  They also took the first graders on a trip and made marshmellow shooters and ice cream with the 8th graders.

Veterans Day Assembly

Special thanks to our over 50 Veterans who attended the ceremony as a special guest of one of our Oakwood students.  If you look closely at the picture you can see three special guests at the center middle of the photo.  These special guests deserve special recognition as they all fought in World War II.

Check out pictures of each of the events at our school website and Facebook.

I found that when my kids were in middle school they hated talking about "school".  These are some great conversation topics to show you might just know what is happening at school, ask them to tell you about:

Are you going to perform in the ARTS Amore dinner night?
What do you do during EAGLE?
What is Google Classroom?
Who is your favorite lunch station?  Homestyle, Hot off the Grill, International
