The following is from the The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, written by Sean Covey:
Habit 1- Be proactive. Take responsibility for your life. Habit 2- Begin with the end in mind. Define your mission and goals in life. Habit 3- Put first things first. Prioritize, and do the most important things first. Habit 4- Think win-win. Have an everyone can win attitude. Habit 5- Seek first to understand, Then to be understood. Listen to people sincerely. Habit 6- Synergize. Work together to achieve more. Habit 7- Sharpen the saw. Renew yourself regularly.
Covey, the son of Stephen Covey, author of the initial The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, (a great road map for success), also offers a flip side of the successful habits with what he calls The 7 Habits of Highly Defective Teens. I find these helpful to reference as well. Habit 1- React. Blame everything on everybody else. Habit 2- Begin with no end in mind. Don't have a plan. Habit 3- Put first things last. Procrastinate. Habit 4- Think win-lose. See life as vicious competition. everyone is out to get you. Habit 5- Seek first to talk, then pretend to listen. Interrupt, and nod your head a lot. Habit 6- Don't cooperate. Why try to get along with others? They're weird if they're different from you. Habit 7- Wear yourself out. Be so busy that you don't take time to study, exercise or go out in nature.
Good, sound advice worth sharing.
These are talking points I often use in my practice with my teenage clients and with my own children. It gives them something to consider. Take time to review some or all of these points from Covey's great book with your own children or students. By doing so, you're helping them to build a solid, and successful foundation for their future.
Happy May!

The Legacy Exploration and Preservation Group Project was designed to promote psychological health for women veterans in Southeastern Massachusetts by engaging in self-reflection, exploring family history and traditions, rediscovering one's roots, deepening one's life purpose, and by expanding their capacity for caring. Specifically, the Project was designed to guide women veterans toward becoming the "keeper of meaning" by preserving and sharing their family legacy with future generations. The primary benefits and significance of this project are for group members to enhance their sense of psychological well-being by experiencing an increased connection to one's family, heritage, and to the global community; and to promote positive development with the beneficiaries of their legacy - future generations. 2013-14 groups were conducted with woman veterans.
