I always strive to look for the opportunities whenever something "goes wrong."
Regarding the many tragedies of the Boston Marathon, there are still opportunities among them.
Here's one:
On Tuesday, the day after the marathon, I was speaking to one of my oldest and most treasured friends who also happens to be an Explosive Specialist for the Department of Homeland Security. We were discussing, among other things, how to parent in these times and how important it is not to feed the energy that the bombers intended to create. My friend shared with me that he teaches his own children to simply be aware of things like unattended backpacks when they are out in the world, not with hyper-vigilance but with a feeling of empowerment in knowing what to do- move away and inform an adult in a position to help.
I have shared this guidance frequently with clients, and with my own children, since that conversation. This is how we affect the world in a positive way, not by being afraid, but by being strengthened and by creating an opportunity.
Here's another:
Behind the few faces of darkness that we have been exposed to, are the many more faces of goodness who have risked their lives to help those in need and who have contributed, in some way, to the caring energy we also feel at this time. I don't know about you, but it brings me comfort when I observe how many good people there truly are in this world.
Lastly, at the time of this writing there has been $26,752,924 dollars donated to the One Fund Boston. Good deeds. Good intentions. Coming from good people. In abundance.
Really making sense of this is the true opportunity.
Wishing you peace and strength this Month,
Jill
