It seems our kids are busier than ever with all they have to do, particularly during the school year, between activities and academics. This serves as a simple reminder this month to make sure, every day, that our kids are having fun.
Yes, things still need to get done around the house and it's important for kids to help out in age appropriate ways in order to contribute and to learn and grow into healthy capable adults. However, it is just as important to have fun and leisure and to respect that our kids version of fun may be very different than our own.
On a recent trip to Ben and Jerry's during a family vacation, a colorful sign hung on the wall of the shop that read, "If it's not fun, why do it?" My son noticed it as we stood in line, promptly took a picture of the framed words of wisdom and said rebelliously, "That's what I'm going to do from now on." Now there was an opportunity for discussion to defend chores and everything else that I ask of my teenage son, and both the parent and the therapist in me longed to speak (at length), but I refrained (likely from the lack of energy I had due to the oppressive heat). After a moment though, I realized for the most part, I agreed with it.

So, this July, perhaps you let your kids lead the way and if it's not fun, why do it?
Happy July!
