PETE'S PICK: PADDLING, HIKING, and PICKING

Here's an opportunity to combine three things I thoroughly enjoy - paddling, hiking, and music.

Head to the lake on Saturday for the Smith Mountain Lake Stand Up Paddle Board Race & Demo hosted by Franklin County Parks and Recreation.  If you've never tried stand up paddle boarding (SUP) here's your chance to try out a board courtesy of Back Country Ski & Sports.

On Sunday, go for a hike on the Chestnut Ridge Loop Trail. The trail, located along the Blue Ridge Parkway, circles the Roanoke Mountain Campground and offers 2.5 and/or 3.4 mile loop options. The trail is very well marked and suitable for beginners.

After your hike enjoy live old time music (7 to 8 p.m.) at the Roanoke Mountain Campground. (Although camping at the campground is closed for the 2013 season, the trails are still open.) Every Sunday evening (through Sept. 1) FRIENDS of the Blue Ridge Parkway provides a concert series. The gates open at 6 p.m.  and close at 8:30 p.m. - so get there at 6, go for your hike, and then wrap up the evening with the music. Bring chairs, blankets, picnic basket, etc.

Get outside!

ROANOKE'S BILL GORDGE NAMED VIRGINIA'S COX CONSERVES HERO
Thanks to Bill Gordge, Pathfinders for Greenways received $10,000 as part of the Cox Conserves program.

Gordge was named 2013 Cox Conserves Hero this week, beating finalists from Fairfax County and Hampton Roads.

Gordge was nominated for helping maintain Roanoke's section of the Appalachian Trail for three decades. He helped design, build and expand the local trail network, while also teaching crews and students about sustainable trail construction. His goal is to get people of all ages outdoors to appreciate the beauty of nature.

COOL GEAR: A GOOD NIGHT OF CAMPING SLEEP
Tired of twisting and turning in your sleep on a mattress that is a weak imitation of the one on your bed during camping adventures?

Me too.

Summertime is the perfect time to try an alternative to the age-old tradition of sleeping on the ground, and then complaining in the morning about the sleep you didn't get. The alternative is to "get hung."

Ditch the tent altogether, and say goodbye to the dirt floor you have called home for many nights. Commonly referred to as ENO Hammocks, Eagle Nest Outfitters is based in Asheville, N.C., and makes a variety of camping and trail gear. I recently tested out the DoubleNest Hammock, Slap Straps, and Fast Fly Rain Tarp.

BONUS: Mention this review to Roanoke Outside intern Dylan at  the Smith Mountain Lake Stand Up Paddleboard Race and Demo this weekend (he'll be under the Roanoke Outside tent) and get a free water bottle, while supplies last.

WIN A REUSABLE WATER BOTTLE
Join us in our pledge to significantly reduce the amount of plastic purchased and discarded by using refillable water bottles and by avoiding the purchase of bottled water all together.

Plastic water bottles take thousands of years to biodegrade. Nine out of 10 water bottles end up as garbage or litter, and that translates into a staggering 60 million bottles per day in the U.S. alone. If the plastic finds its way to the ocean, it will never biodegrade -- it fragments into pieces that are consumed by marine wildlife. Recent ocean water samples indicate that there are six times more plastic fragments than phytoplankton in many parts of the Pacific Ocean, and that no ocean is free of plastic.

Take the pledge today >>>
