PETE'S PICK: GREAT AMERICAN BACKYARD CAMPOUT
Happy Summer Solstice (Friday)! Do you remember your first camp fire, roasting marshmallows, or sleeping in your first tent?
Today, 25 percent of kids play outside daily -- as opposed to 75 percent a generation ago. Be a part of the Great American Backyard Campout and set an example for children that will get them excited about the great outdoors. Join thousands of campers this Saturday (or you can choose another day that's convenient for you). Add some fun to your outing -- turn your headlamp into a portable lamp. Embrace an active, healthy outdoor lifestyle! If you are looking for a place to go camping besides your backyard, check out our list of local campsites. And while you're outside make sure to keep an eye on the sky for the supermoon. A supermoon happens during the full cycle as the moon makes its closest approach to Earth, making the moon appear much larger than normal. The best viewing locations in the Roanoke Region include McAfee Knob, Read Mountain, Dragon's Tooth, Kelly's Knob, Tinker Cliffs, and Sharp Top. Get outside!

WOMEN-ONLY ADVENTURE SERIES KICKS OFF
These three outdoor adventures -- rock climbing, kayaking, and mountain biking -- are just for women. Join Roanoke County Parks and Recreation for the Women's Adventure Series, beginning Saturday with a basic rock climbing course.
The series is flexible and allows you to pick whether you wanted to participate in all three adventures or just one or two. (Choose all three and you'll have one adventure to look forward to each month all summer.) Saturday's rock climbing course is an introduction to climbing with a focus on grace and technique rather than strength alone. Routes will be set up in advance and experienced climbers will be on hand to show you the ropes. Learn more and register today >>>

CELEBRATE THE ARTS AT A ROANOKE PARK
What better way to spend a Saturday afternoon than enjoying the great outdoors, art, and music? The Parks & Arts program is bringing that concept to life all summer at various locations around the city.

Each event is at a different park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and features both performing and visual arts. The next event is June 29 at Kennedy Park featuring performing artists Randolph Walker (Green Eggs and Ham Rap), Roanoke Children's Theatre, and Electric Chameleon and visual artist Gwyn Hall.
