SUPPORT THE ROANOKE RIVER AT OPEN HOUSE
Don't know what TMDL is or how it relates to you recreating in the river? Neither do we - and that's why we're going to the Roanoke River Watershed Open House on June 11. The Roanoke River Watershed Open House is the first in a series of public meetings to develop a plan for the Roanoke River and its tributaries, including Ore Branch, Back Creek, Mason Creek, Mudlick Creek, Murray Run, Peters Creek, Tinker Creek, Carvin Creek, Glade Creek, Laymantown Creek, and Lick Run. So what are those TMDLs we mentioned? Total Maximum Daily Load. A TMDL implementation plan is currently being developed for the upper Roanoke River Watershed. The implementation plan is the mechanism through which water quality in the watershed will be addressed. The plan will outline corrective actions, associated costs and benefits, measurable goals, and an implementation timeline. Learn more and get open house details >>>

IT'S NATIONAL FISHING WEEK; FISH FREE
New and experienced anglers can cast a line this weekend before buying a fishing license. As part of National Fishing Week, the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries is allowing those 16 and older to fish without a license Friday through Sunday. (And if you like it, make sure to get a license to continue fishing the rest of the year.) National Fishing and Boating week highlights the importance of recreational boating and fishing in enhancing quality of life and preserving our country's natural beauty. The event kicked off Sunday and runs through the weekend. But where should you go?

VISIT NATION'S LARGEST CONTIGUOUS URBAN FARM
There's no better time than Saturday to come out and see what Heritage Point Urban Farm has to offer. The farm is celebrating its dedication at 10 a.m., plus the morning is packed with other activities. The Farmers Market is open from 8 a.m. to noon, take a self-guided tour (10:15 a.m.-12:20 p.m.), or pack a picnic lunch to enjoy on the farm. In addition, Heritage Point is encouraging soil sharing. Bring a small bag of soil from your garden and exchange it for some of the best soil from the farm. Heritage Point, the nation's largest contiguous urban farm, includes 24.9 acres and is owned and operated by Roanoke Natural Foods Co-op and its 3,200 community owners. Learn more and RSVP >>>
