This weekend there are several opportunities to try a new outdoor activity. Now is the time to get off your duff and do it (you know you want to).
Kayaking: There are hundreds of miles of rivers and lakes to paddle in and around the Roanoke Region, and
exploring by kayak is one of the best ways to enjoy them. If you've ever had any interest in kayaking you don't want to miss the free kayak demo taking place this Saturday. The staff of
Back Country Ski and Sport will be at
Salem Rotary Park from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday. This is your chance to try out the newest whitewater, sit-on-top, and sit-in kayaks.
Canoeing: Don't get lost up the creek without a paddle. Instead come out to Camp Roanoke this Saturday and learn the right way to guide a canoe. Whether it's your first time canoeing or you're looking to refresh your skills, this
program will give you the tools necessary to paddle a tandem canoe on flat or moving water.
Rock Climbing: Have you been to
The River Rock climbing gym yet? It's a great way to get a taste of rock climbing, but if you've ever wanted to get on real rock you need to join the
Beginner Outdoor Climbing Clinic on Saturday. It's an all-day affair, but afterward you'll be well versed in climbing jargon like belay, anchors, and rappelling. If you've already spent some time on the rock and want to take it to the next level, join the
Intermediate Climbing Clinic on Sunday.
Run Your First 5K: Perhaps it's time. Time to get off the couch and run your first 5K.
Couch to 5K programs are designed to give you the personalized training to help you cross the finish line. There's even a family program.
Eat Strawberries: There is a reason the
Strawberry Festival won the "best annual festival" award last year. Community School's 33rd annual Strawberry Festival will be Friday and Saturday, in Roanoke at the corner of Elm Avenue and Jefferson Street.
Get outside!
