WEEKEND UPDATE

PETE'S PICK

The other day I was riding my bicycle home from work and had a close call with a car that inadvertently ran me off the road (just a little). Of course in the heat of the moment I was not happy with the driver, but after I cooled down I was reminded that Roanoke is a youngcommunity when it comes to cycling. By young, I mean that drivers are not used to seeing bicyclists on the road, and that it takes time for a community to learn how to share the road.

As cyclists we need to ensure we lead by example by obeying all traffic laws (riding single file on the Parkway, stopping at stop lights/signs, riding in the proper direction, etc.). And as drivers we need to remember that cyclists are people, too - dads, moms, brothers, sisters, daughters, and sons.

It's going to be a beautiful weekend, make sure you find the time to get outside and enjoy it.

Check out Fenwick Mines Recreation Area if you're looking for a new area to explore.

Get outside!

WIN IT: ALLEGHANY HIGHLANDS TRIATHLON ENTRY AND HOTEL STAY
Run, paddle, and bike your way through beautiful natural landscapes in the Alleghany Highlands.

The Alleghany Highlands Triathlon is scheduled for May 18 and features a 3.1-mile run, 2-mile paddle in a kayak, and 13-mile bike ride. And proceeds go right back into the community, supporting future events, Clifton Forge Main Street, and the Alleghany Highlands YMCA.

Roanoke Outside and the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce and Tourism want to help you participate for free by giving away free individual registration for the triathlon and a one night stay at The Oak Tree Inn in Low Moor.

LEARN TO RIDE THE ROAD WITH OTHER CYCLISTS

Want to commute by bike? Or participate in your first century ride?

The Blue Ridge Bicycle Club, East Coasters, and Ride Solutions have just the program for you.

Beginning May 4 and running weekly through Aug. 17, the groups will sponsor a training program for aspiring cyclists. The Open Roads program will teach riders how to develop the skills, fitness level, and endurance needed to achieve individual goals.

The program is $100 and includes weekly instruction and rides, a custom-designed bike jersey, 1-year membership in the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club, and free basic bike inspection from East Coasters.

GET READY TO GALLOP 4 THE GREENWAYS
There's nothing better than a fun race to support a great cause.

Gallop 4 the Greenways
is just that. The May 11 event features a 5K, 1 mile walk, and kid's fun run with proceeds going to support the ever-growing network of pedestrian and bicycle trails in the Roanoke Region. At the conclusion of the race, there will be a festival for racers and spectators featuring live music from The Key West Band, food, and more for children and adults.

Unlike some other events, this is an evening race. The 5K kicks off at 5 p.m., right after the kid's run (so make sure to cheer on the young runners). The walk will also start at 5. Awards will be given to the top finishers.

Net proceeds from the event go to Pathfinders for Greenways, a non-profit charitable organization.
