WEEKEND UPDATE

PETE'S PICK
I have two things for you to check out this weekend.

Thursday night, Sunniva Sorby will share her "lessons learned by the first all-women expedition to the South Pole." Sunniva and three other women made history in 1993 by skiing 700 miles (while hauling 200-pound sleds) to the South Pole.

On Saturday, RIMBA (the local chapter of the International Mountain Bicycling Association) is hosting a Spring Ride and Party. The rides will take place at Carvins Cove Bennett Springs lot (bring $2 for parking). Intermediate and advance rides start at 11 a.m. while the beginner rides begin at noon. When you're finished riding head to Billy's Barn to celebrate the fact that spring is on its way. This is the perfect opportunity to get a guided tour of the trails, learn more about the riding in the area, and meet fellow mountain bikers.

GET INVOLVED IN FAMILY-FRIENDLY BIKE RACES
It's the perfect time to pick up a new hobby or sport and thanks to the Fishburn Park Youth Mountain Bike Series, anyone can start mountain biking this spring.

Beginning April 3, this series will help bikers of all ages learn more about bike racing. The short course gives riders a diverse experience and is spectator friendly. In addition, there are race options for kids as young as 2 in the balance bike or trike races, on a short, flat, and straight course.

The standard course will be marked off arrows prior to the event and you can go out and pre-ride the course. Parents are allowed to ride along with their kids during the event.

GET READY FOR CLEAN VALLEY DAY
Pick a spot and get ready to help your community.

The 34th Annual Clean Valley Day is scheduled for April 13, with a kickoff celebration at 8:30 a.m. and Vic Thomas Park followed by clean ups at locations all over the Roanoke Region.

This valley-wide clean up promotes respect and dedication to the beautiful community we share. It's a great team-building opportunity for corporations and organizations, and a great way to teach your kids about community service.

So pick your spot -- a park, playground, roadside, stream bank, or your very own neighborhood - and get started. Anyone can participate. The Clean Valley Council only asks that you register in advance. They will even provide volunteers with trash bags and gloves.

Why wait? Register to participate in Clean Valley Day >>>
