PETE'S PICKS
Last weekend was my son's birthday and we celebrated by taking him and some friends out to my old stomping grounds - Wilderness Adventure at Eagle Landing.

It's always an odd feeling to be on the other side of the show (I used to work there), but as my wife and I were walking one of the trails we got to talking about how we should plan an overnight outing for a few of our friends.

We stayed in Sly Lodge (view a few photos of our stay) which has a full kitchen and sleeps up to 32 people in eleven rooms. So our plan is to invite four or five families with each family getting two rooms (one for them and one for their kids). The other beautiful thing about our stay was that we could bring both our dogs and they could run free ... so not only were we in heaven, but so were our dogs.  We didn't take advantage of any "add on" activities as our kids were more than content running around in the woods and we were happy as clams sitting by the campfire, but on our next trip we plan to ship the kids off for a climbing and zip line session with the staff, while the parents take a hike to the bluff overlook.

Regardless of whether you go to Wilderness Adventure at Eagle Landing, my recommendation is to spend some time with your family and friends outside.  Whether camping along the Appalachian Trail, tent camping at Douthat or Smith Mountain Lake State Park, or "glamping" in a lodge ... these are the memories you'll never forget.  If you choose to explore your options with Wilderness Adventure, call Julia (540-864-6792) and tell her Pete sent you.

BLUE RIDGE MARATHON RANKS AMONG WORLD'S TOUGHEST

Blue Ridge Marathon Roanoke's Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Marathon earned a spot among the World's 15 Toughest Marathons as ranked by The Weather Channel.

The Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Marathon features more than 7,200 feet of elevation change. The uphill portions will test each runner's strength and endurance while the downhill sections are equally challenging.

"It's really hard to say what you'll find, but we guarantee smiling, cheering fans to help you up your last major climb at mile 19," race chair Pete Eshelman told The Weather Channel.

The Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Marathon finds itself on the list with marathons such as the Lake Tahoe Marathon, the Great Wall Marathon in China, the North Pole Marathon, and the Pikes Peak Marathon in Colorado.

You can read about the Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Marathon and 14 other tough races from The Weather Channel.

The Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Marathon is scheduled for April 20, 2013, and registration is open.

STAR CITY HALF MARATHON & 10K NEEDS VOLUNTEERS
Runners Grab your running shoes. It's time for the annual Star City Half Marathon.

Registration is underway for the Nov. 17 event.

But you don't have to be a runner to participate. Why not consider volunteering to be a course marshal or to work a water stop for the upcoming Star City half and 10K? The runs are in need of volunteers on race day beginning at 7:30 a.m., with flexible shifts.

If you are interested in helping out, contact Kim Parker at kgparker74@yahoo.com to sign up.
