Changes to Education Development Charges Now in Effect

Construction As reported in the December 2012 and January 2013 issues of The Business Report, the Regional School Boards proposed increases to the Residential and Non-Residential Education Development Charges.  

 

These changes have been approved and took effect on January 22, 2013 and apply to all development activity in Caledon, Brampton and Mississauga.

Social Media Workshops for Small Business - Feb. 14, 21, 28 & Mar. 7, 2013

Caledon Public LibraryOn February 7, 2013, the Caledon Public Library began presenting a series of workshops which will assist you with in the communications and marketing of your small business through the use of social media.

 

Created and presented by Shelly Sargent of Caledon Online, this series of 90 minute, hands-on classes will outline the  skills involved while demonstrating that  social media marketing is nothing to be afraid of - it is really just word-of-mouth powered by technology.

 

The first workshop has already taken place and the remaining four classes will be offered on Thursdays, beginning at 7:00pm as per the schedule below:

 Workshop #3 - Feb. 21: Twitter Basics
 Workshop #4 - Feb. 28: Intro to LinkedIn

WinterFeast is Back - February 19 to March 10, 2013

The 8th annual WinterFeast: A Culinary Experience in the Hills of Headwaters will take place from February 19 to March 10, 2013.

This year's event will feature 12 of the finer dining establishments located throughout the Hills of Headwaters region; including the following three restaurants located in Caledon:

All menus are offered at "prix fixe" rates and include at least three courses.


WinterFeast is a great way to experience high-quality local culinary talent at a significantly reduced price. The menus demonstrate how locally-grown and produced foods can be used to create delectable gourmet cuisine.

There is also an opportunity to win a gourmet dining experience at one of the WinterFeast restaurants.

Partners in Tourism Summit - March 6, 2013

Peel Halton Workforce Development Group Apprenticeship Career Connections Fair - March 6, 2013

Apprenticeship Career Connections FairThe Peel Halton Workforce Development Group will be hosting its annual Apprenticeship Career Connections Fair on March 6, 2013.

 

This year's event will take place at the International Centre, Hall 5 (6,900 Airport Road, Mississauga) between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. and it is suited for anyone interested in a career in the skilled trades.

Caledon Food Sector Profile BrochureThe Town of Caledon and the surrounding area can boast a historic role, spanning over 150 years, in shaping Ontario's manufacturing and food processing industries.

 

The Greater Toronto Area is Canada's largest food processing jurisdiction and the second largest and most competitive in North America. In 2011, it registered in excess of $33 Billion in annual sales.

 

Caledon's location in the heart of Canada's largest food processing and transportation hubs make it an ideal place to establish or expand a food processing operation.

 

To help promote and support this assertion, the Town of Caledon's Economic Development Department has developed a Food Sector Profile brochure; featuring industry statistics and testimonials by current Caledon-based food processors - ranging from new start-ups to large, well-established companies.

More Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games Contracts awarded to Caledon Businesses

Sierra ExcavatingIn the December 2012 issue of The Business Report, it was announced that Caledon-based and family-owned Sierra Excavation Enterprises Inc. was awarded the contract to complete Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the preparatory work required to get the Caledon Equestrian Park ready for the Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games.

 

At this time the Town of Caledon is pleased to announce that more contracts have been awarded for Phase 3 of the equestrian facility preparations - completion of the Ring Footing. After an open and competitive procurement process the successful proponents for this work is Sierra Excavation with F�deration Equestre Internationale (FEI) Footing Specialist Christian Bauer.

 

As with the work done in the previous Phases, Sierra has sub-contracted much of the work to other companies, including the following Caledon-based businesses:

This will ensure that the economic benefit of this work will be spread across a broader swath of the local economy.


Economic Impact of the Games 

The participation of Caledon Equestrian Park in the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games will have a significant economic impact on the Town of Caledon. A study conducted by the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance for the Town of Caledon found the annual economic impact of these improvements estimated at $15.1 million.


According to TO2015, the Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games Organizing Committee, the games will generate 15,000 jobs. That measurable goal is starting to have positive impact on Caledon based employers and residents.

On December 18, 2012, specialty coffee-roasters Ara Azzurro marked its first anniversary as a Caledon-based business. For seven years prior it operated in Brampton.

Employing three full-time and five part-time workers, it offers a diverse range of coffee products, including espressos and exotic filter-ground coffees that are freshly roasted daily.

The Hills of Headwaters Tourism Association Awarded Trillium Funding

On Friday, January 25, 2013 The Hills of Headwaters Tourism Association was the recipient of $119,000 in funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

 

A leading grantmaker in Canada, the Ontario Trillium Foundation strengthens the capacity of the voluntary sector through investments in community-based initiatives. An agency of the Government of Ontario, OTF builds healthy and vibrant communities.

 

Ontario Trillium FoundationThese funds have been awarded to increase the capacity of the collaborative to promote the Headwaters region as a centre of equine excellence in the province of Ontario, thereby strengthening the local economy. This funding will also allow the Association to hire a project coordinator and begin the process of marketing the equine opportunities available in the region.

 

The equine events of the TO2015 Pan/Parapan American Games are coming to the Hills of Headwaters in 2015 at the Caledon Equestrian Park. The Ontario Trillium Foundation will provide significant support to this important work, and will ensure the Headwaters region is recognized as Ontario's "Horse Country" throughout Canada and the world!

 

The Hills of Headwaters Tourism Association and the Headwaters Equine Leadership Group acknowledge the support of the Town of Caledon, County of Dufferin, Town of Mono, Town of Shelburne, Town of Erin and Dufferin.biz, who have supported our work on this initiative, and gratefully thank the Ontario Trillium Foundation for their generous support of this regional community equine collaborative.
