Based on the best-selling book by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. An epic love story set amidst the Nigerian/Biafran civil war of the late 1960s. Sister lanna (Thandie Newton) and Kainene (Anika Noni Rose) are wealthy, beautiful, independent young ladies - fresh from gaining their Oxbridge degrees - who embark on markedly different romances with Odenigbo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Richard (Joseph Mawle). As the civil war comes to crisis point, their fractious sibling rivalry must be set aside in order to survive .
This preview is another feature of the African Odysseys film programme which for 7 years has screened rare and unusual African films at the British Film Institute on London's South Bank. The films are sourced and selected by the African Caribbean Consultative group which is comprised of grassroots organisations with a history of pro-active black film screenings. The BFI is the only cinema in the country to offer monthly screenings of African/Caribbbean films. The films are often complemented with talks, workshops and Q and A's. 1600 school pupils packed the house for a US screening of Muddy Lions last week. Adventures of the Muddy Lions premieres this Saturday 8th March at 11am. Tickets are only 6 pounds and can be bought from the box office on the day.
|
Backed by super producer Tim Reid (owner of the second biggest Black owned studio in the USA) the Adventures of the Muddy Lions is the sort of film Hollywood would never invest in. A group of young black boys undergo rites of passage in an urban and rural environment while successfully mentored by their community elders. This fantastic and inspirational film shows shows no stereotypes but offers African solutions to the often mentioned problems of inner city youth. It's hilarious to boot. Make sure you are in the audience for the Q and A The Legend of Oscar Micheaux Sat 15 March 2pm. A black man who wrote, directed, produced AND screened his own films while in the Apartheid state of pre-civil rights USA . His story should be a world wide legend but he is hardly known. The most prolific independent filmmaker in US cinema, Micheaux wrote, produced and directed 44 feature length films between 1919-1948. At a time when black people could not even vote and were used to seeing themselves portrayed only as maids and savages Micheaux showed black Kings and Queens, Pilots, Doctors and lavish love stories. Presented by Tim Reid, Legacy Media Institute Tickets £6 at BFI Sat 15 March 2pm www.bfi.org.uk Legacy Media Institute will run vocational training for experienced filmmakers from diverse backgrounds from 3-15 March. For more information contact: dominika.widlak-manka@bfi.org.uk Also on the 15th Sidewalk Stories. In this witty, Chaplinesque comedy-drama, Lane stars as a homeless Manhattan street artist who winds up taking care of a toddler after her father is murdered. Shot in black and white with no dialogue but a brilliantly evocative soundtrack, the film has been cited by Michel Hazanavicius as a key inspiration for his Oscar®-winning film The Artist. Recently given a sparkling digital restoration, it's a charming and subtly challenging look at life on the breadline in late 80s NYC. Anyone serious about black film needs to see these two gems

A special event for all mentoring, youth groups, Saturday Schools and Pan African organisations. Q and A with director.
Entry 6 pounds.
This is exactly the type of film the community has been crying out for.. funny, accurate, realistic with positive portrayals of young black men and their fathers and mothers. The film is directed by a young African American man who persevered until he finally got an apprenticeship with black film legend Tim Reid. The director Praheme got his first and masters degrees from Howard and Florida State. He then used Garveyite economics and got his father, family and friends to invest 250,000 dollars to fund his first feature film. For those who remember films like the Goonies and Stand By Me, bring your family and fill up the cinema
