VWS NEWS & VIEWS
Letter from the President!

VWS Annual Meeting and I Can Paint Grant!

I want to encourage you to come to our annual meeting on October 17th from 9:30am till 3pm.  Admission is $35 to cover the cost of the room and the lunch, but if that is a financial hardship you may attend for free or you may pay what you can afford.  The Location is the Middlebury Inn in Middlebury VT.  There is a sign up form on our web site.  Your participation is what makes it possible to exist.
This year is our 20th anniversary and we will have commemorative coffee mugs for the event free of charge to those who attend.  They will have the VWS logo on one side and the I CAN PAINT Logo on the opposite side.  Also our demonstration this year will be from one of our founding members, Robert O'Brien.
If you plan to pay any dues at the door, please help us by writing a separate check for your dues from the check for the meeting.  A note in the check memo line is always helpful for us.

"I Can Paint" Grant Received!  What a difference a day makes.  Several days after we broke the news that we had not received our Vermont Arts Council grant we got an email from VWS member Annie Christopher and her husband Peter Backman that their foundation which is managed by the Vermont Community Foundation may be in a position to help.  Sure enough, The I CAN PAINT program has received a check for $2,000!  Thank you Peter and Annie.
Together with this grant and the $1,270 raised with individual donations to date we are fully up and running again this year.  Claudia Carl is assembling kits and we have made commitments to 53 more students so far.  If you are working in a public school or in an after school program and think you have students that could benefit from receiving watercolor kits and some instruction from our membership please let me know, we are not out of kits yet for this year.

Keep on Painting.

MATS: sole or top mats will be white or off white.  If a bottom mat is used, it may be white, off white or colored. Filets may be used. Mats are not required for all paintings, but if you are not framing your painting, archival spacers must be used.

FRAMES: frames must be sturdy, in excellent condition, and must be professional quality.  They must have picture wire attached to the back from which to hang the painting.

The following are not acceptable for VWS shows:
  • Float frames
  • Table top frames
  • Damaged frames or frames that are disjointed at the corners
  • Saw tooth hangers
  • Duct tape, masking tape or other non-professional-looking materials used on backs of frames.
  • Sloppy construction as seen from front or back
Persons accepting paintings at drop off are instructed to not accept paintings if they do not meet these guidelines.  Thank you for your cooperation.

*Occasionally there are special shows where other guidelines apply, which will be described in that show's prospectus and/or other communications.  Otherwise, the above guidelines will apply to all VWS shows including hub shows.

Wet Paint Live (WPL)

A "Call for Artists" is now out for watercolor, oil, pastel, and acrylic artists to paint at a new southern Vermont "Plein Air" event scheduled for all-day, Saturday, October 10, 2015 in Springfield, Vermont called "Wet Paint Live" (WPL).  Both professional and emerging artists are encouraged to register soon. WPL will be held rain or shine on a designated route or "Plein Air Walk".  The walking and painting loop winds along the Black River into downtown and lingers at three spectacular waterfalls Falls that splash against 19th century factory buildings.  Two demonstration artists, Jamie Townsend and Matt Chinian will be painting and explaining their style and technique throughout the day.

The day begins and ends at the Great Hall Public Art Showcase, One Hundred River Street, Springfield, with an art show, judging, and awards.  The judge is Springfield resident, Robert Carsten, PSA-M, an internationally known pastel artist and experienced judge in all media categories.   Find more information and to register, visit  www.wplvermont.com.

Announcing the 2016 VWS Watercolor Workshop
VWS is bringing Jeannie McGuire to Vermont for a one-week workshop scheduled for June 27 to July 1, 2016 at the Landgrove Inn.
Jeannie McGuire, a Pittsburgh-based artist, strives to invoke individual interpretation through her artwork, which impressively utilizes a free application of paint and stylistic forms of expression.  McGuire uses her own photography, acquired snapshots and life drawings to spark her creativity.  Her work has been described as a brilliant combination of emotion, movement, natural design, and sheer artistry that has been expanded upon from her days as a commercial graphic designer and photographer.  Impressionistic in nature with an identifiable subject, her strong, figurative approaches are unique in more ways than one.  Her works have been displayed and awarded on an International level and represented in numerous art magazines.  As she was quoted in The Artist's Magazine's May 2012 issue, "The figure continues to interest me more than any other subject.  I'm drawn to the fluid lines and organic shapes, the interaction of figures, and the ability to create a persona, tell a story and portray a mood."
For more information or to register, go to vermontwatercolorsociety.com.  You may also see more of Jeannie's work at jeanniemcguire.com.  Register before the end of the year to take advantage of a reduced cost for the workshop.

TRINKETS FROM THE TREASURER

You will find under "Members Corner" the caption "Forms" on the VWS website.  We have two new forms for members.  One is when a member is submitting money to the VWS bookkeeper.  It is setup for easy identification of why the money is being submitted and for what reason.  The second is when a member needs to submit an invoice for an expense to be paid for VWS business.  Both forms should be easy to use. When submitting a billing please make sure that the supporting documentation is included and that the appropriate Board of Director member has signed the approved by line of the form.
Your use of these two forms is important and will make our bookkeeper's job a lot easier. A nonstandard form can cause confusion.  Please help by using them.
Please contact me should you have any questions regarding either form.
