PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Mark Nielsen
Mark Nielsen
DISAPPOINTING BUT NOT DEVASTATING NEWS:

Our request for a Project Grant application of $3,000 to the Vermont Arts Council for funds to continue with our "I CAN PAINT" program has been turned down.   Although we had a strong grant in general, and a very "fundable" idea, our application was considered to be lacking in our case that we needed the grant money to execute on our program.

In a way, the VAC is correct, with the grant money we could have served 60 additional students but without the money we will still serve students, just not as many.

To date we have raised $1,100 on our own.  That is enough to reimburse Lynn Pratt for her pilot program for 8 students, (see the "I CAN PAINT" Facebook page) and support Ruth Kaldor's 12 students in the Peacham Elementary School.  Of course we would like to do more this year but without additional money we will be limited.

Perry Williamson and I will be putting our heads together to discuss reaching out to the corporate world for funds but that those funds will likely be 2016 commitments at this point in the year.  If you have some ideas along those lines or feel that you're in a position to help please give me a call or email me with your thoughts.

Of course your contributions are still most welcome.  If your thinking about pitching in with a check pleases mail your check made out to the Vermont Watercolor Society to me so that I can properly thank you with a note, my address is:

Mark Nielsen
28 Center Road
Corinth VT 05039

Please include on the check memo line that it is for the "I Can Paint" fund and we will get it into the proper account.

Happy painting.
Mark Nielsen, President

A "Call for Artists" is now out for watercolor, oil, pastel, and acrylic artists to paint at a new southern Vermont "Plein Air" event scheduled for all-day, Saturday, October 10, 2015 in Springfield, Vermont called "Wet Paint Live" (WPL).  Both professional and emerging artists are encouraged to register soon. WPL will be held rain or shine on a designated route or "Plein Air Walk".  The walking and painting loop winds along the Black River into downtown and lingers at three spectacular waterfalls Falls that splash against 19th century factory buildings.  Two demonstration artists, Jamie Townsend and Matt Chinian will be painting and explaining their style and technique throughout the day.

The day begins and ends at the Great Hall Public Art Showcase, One Hundred River Street, Springfield, with an art show, judging, and awards.  The judge is Springfield resident, Robert Carsten, PSA-M, an internationally known pastel artist and experienced judge in all media categories.   Find more information and to register, visit  www.wplvermont.com.

Plein Air Event at
EastView at Middlebury,
the non-profit retirement community
in Middlebury

Come enjoy our beautiful campus on
Friday, October 2 between 6:00am and 4:00pm.
A complimentary buffet luncheon will be available at noon in our dining room for the participating artists.
We look forward to viewing paintings displayed on easels between 4:00pm - 5:00pm in our Community Room.
When you arrive on our campus select your location to paint for the day.

EastView is surrounded by mountains, hills, meadows, ponds and woods.  The views are remarkable and the structures are lovely.

The late Larry Coffin, a signature VWS member, was a resident of EastView.   Larry was instrumental in forming our EastView Resident Art Group and was the first Chair of the group.  Our Art Room has been formally dedicated to him.  I enjoyed working closely with him to display exhibits of resident artwork in our halls, lobby and dining areas.  One idea that we spoke of frequently was having area artists come to a "paint in" on our beautiful campus.

This invitation is for VWS members and is limited to a maximum of 20 participants.

RSVP by September 18 to Heather at hviens@eastviewmiddlebury.com

HUB NEWS

White River Junction Hub News

If you've never been to The Norman Williams Public Library in Woodstock, there's more than one reason to go.  Not only is it a lovely pink sandstone building that was built in the 1880's but now is hosting The White River Junction Hub Show.  There are 25 member paintings in the new (2 year old) Mezzanine Gallery upstairs which was part of a 3 million $$ renovation in 2000.
The well-attended reception was held Aug. 21st but the show will remain up until Sept 30th.  It's worth the trip but if you need another reason, check out Woodstock's Brick Oven's Arugula Pizza for lunch... ENJOY!!
