HUB RALLY
May 16th Pam Dexter convened our annual HUB RALLY for hub point people. Hub point people and hub representatives talked about current plans for hub activities. Pam reviewed the VWS policies regarding hub spending and reimbursement. Kate Jackson reviewed submission guidance for Snippets articles. Charles Norris-Brown presented a list of things to consider if your hub is planning an exhibit of its members works.
In the course of discussions we stumbled over what may be a widely held misconception about the role of hub point people that I would like to address. The role of the hub point person is to help as a facilitator of events and ideas that come from the members of a particular hub. It is not to create or generate events for hub members. If you belong to a hub and you would like to do an activity with your hub members talk to your point person and they will help. Please do not assume that the hub point person is going to create events for you. They might if it is in their nature, and that is wonderful, but not all point people work like that. Hubs are our grass roots and that means each and everyone is a part.
Pat Lipinski is stepping down as hub point person for the Newport/St. Johnsbury Hub. Thank you Pat, what a great job you have done in the Northeast Kingdom! Mary Brenner will be taking over for Pat.
Pam Dexter will be stepping back from her role as Director of Hubs at the end of the year, Pam has served on the board for many years and has done a terrific job for the VWS, she will be a hard act to follow but if your thinking of serving on the VWS board and you're a good people person this is a role you may want to talk to Pam about, she thinks it is the best job on the board!
On an unrelated note; The VWS has just submitted a Project Grant application requesting $3,000 to the Vermont Arts Council for funds to continue with our "I CAN PAINT" program. To date we have raised $875 on our own. If your thinking about pitching in with a check pleases mail your check made out to the Vermont Watercolor Society to me so that I can properly thank you with a note, my address is:
Mark Nielsen
28 Center Road
Corinth VT 05039
Please include on the check memo line that it is for the "I Can Paint" fund and we will get it into the proper account.
Keep painting and share your talents and passion for watercolor with others.
Mark

VWS Burlington/St. Albans Hub News
Lynn Cummings
Hub "Point Person"
If you are interested in becoming the leader for the Burlington/St. Albans hub area, please let me or Pam Dexter know. After 2 ˝ years it is time for someone else to "take the reigns" and bring some different ideas and events to the 60 or so members of the hub.
White River Junction Hub
The White River Junction Hub welcomed Margaret Dwyer as our guest artist for a full-day workshop on June 6th. 13 VWS members attended The Thompson Center in Woodstock, Vermont. Her topic focused on 'Backlighting for your Painting to Create Depth and Interest.' We all chose an Audubon Bird Picture and designed the backgrounds using her technique. First a layer was done with a wet on wet technique dropping in your light colors (yellows for sunlight glow) onto wetted areas of your paper where you chose your background to be. While still wet, enough greens (or other colors) were dropped into the still damp paper so they blended together into new shades of backlit glow. When that dried, you could go over the paper with wet on dry to carve out negative spaces which then created distance. When that dried you could now layer over your background your foreground images of move leaves and a bird on branches or in a nest, whatever you chose. The drying process gave us plenty of time to eat snacks and mingle with the group or some worked on two paintings at a time. The process worked very well and it was a lot of fun to see the final product achieved. The WRJ Hub is having a show this Aug 17th thru Sept 30th at Norman Williams Library on the green in Woodstock, Vermont. The Reception date will soon be announced.
NH Hub members enjoyed sun, sand & seascapes this past weekend as we were the guests of Jan Olmstead in Rye, NH. Vistas and places we rarely enjoy as landlocked artists surrounded us inspiring new paintings. Conversations covering all sorts of art topics enriched our artistic souls. Plein air painting offered a new experience as seagulls flew above us settling their differences. A sunset-lit marsh was heartbreakingly beautiful changing moment by moment as the sun slowly disappeared. The seashore with its sand and salt air erased our memories of a cold and snowy winter. We were suddenly transported into the freedom of summer and well, an adventure. A lovely, very petite, Korean artist shared her amazing and sophisticated abstracts with us in her Gallery. Bob, with his "out of this world" Polaris Slingshot motorcycle (didn't look like motorcycle more of a Mad Max kind of thing), was equally enthralled by the marsh sunset and pulled up beside us. We suddenly found ourselves in the middle of a wedding- not enough time to explain that one. I need to alert you that "No Parking" means just that even off season. So, you think Hub events are boring? This one certainly was not. I returned home full of new paintings, information on web sites, marketing and a moral philosophy which respects our patrons. I held in my hand a HUGE mop brush which wets a full sheet with three swipes. I was encouraged, instructed and validated as an artist. I now need to wash the seagull poop off my car and take a nap.
