My Pride in the VWS:
I am moved to write today of my pride in the VWS. Sometimes I use this column to express personal thoughts and it seems like it has been all business for the last 6 months, this month I wanted to share my personal sense of pride in our organization. The pride I am feeling is from my sense that we are working well as a team. I know it sounds cliché but here is my evidence.
-
Quick resolution to a communications glitch that caused last month's snippets to Gmail accounts to dump into spam. Thank you Lynn Pratt and Kate Jackson.
-
News that 57 members entered 100 paintings for consideration in the spring show at the Gruppe Gallery! Congratulations to Robert and Charles and a big thank you to Eric Gottesman for personally helping some of our members interface with the online program Art Show Manager.
-
Annual Spring Event has been firmed up with an interesting agenda including a presentation and question and answer session with Attorney Gordon Troy to discuss Intellectual Property/Copyright laws and a painting demonstration from VWS member Peter Huntoon. This meeting will be held at Lake Morey Resort May 31st. Don't forget to bring a painting to share. The attendance fee is $35 but if you need financial relief that can be accommodated and guest are free. Thank you Martin LaLonde for pulling this together.
-
On the VWS Education Fund front, as of the 22nd of March, we have received $600 in donations from our members. Also, we have received 18 name suggestions and 2 image submissions for the renaming contest. I am looking forward to seeing which one the board selects.
-
Hub point person rally has been set for May 16th at the Bethany Church-Parlor Room from 9:30am to 12:30 pm with a brunch being served. This is a meeting for hub point people and members who are thinking that they might be interested in becoming a point person. Thank you to Pam Dexter for organizing this important gathering.
-
On the business/organizational side, Carlton Annis, Amanda Ammend and Betty Waterman have organized our accounting into a non-profit version of Quickbooks and reworked our formatting to help our directors better understand our financial standing. A big thank you to the three of you, I certainly sleep better knowing that this is in place. Perhaps I should take this space to mention there are still a significant number of you who have not sent in your dues. Please get out your check books and take that off your list of things you have to do.
That is it for now,
Keep up your painting.
Mark

We will be hearing from a respected intellectual property law attorney, who will give us a brief introduction to copyright issues that artists may face and will answer our questions.
We are also pleased that Peter Huntoon will be demonstrating his distinctive painting techniques featuring innovative color, strong composition, and enthusiastic brushwork. Mats are not required for all paintings, but if you are not framing your painting, archival spacers must be used. FRAMES: frames must be sturdy, in excellent condition, and must be professional quality. They must have picture wire attached to the back from which to hang the painting. The following are not acceptable for VWS shows: - Float frames

- Damaged frames or frames that are disjointed at the corners
- Saw tooth hangers
- Duct tape, masking tape or other non-professional-looking materials used on backs of frames.
