Task Force assembled for the VWS Education Fund:
At or strategic planning session last November the board formed a task force to refine our plans for the VWS Education Fund. The Task force is comprised of Dianne Bell, Charles Norris-Brown, Tony Conner, Lynn Pratt, and me. Together we are working on developing good answers to a number of questions that have been raised by our Development team, Jan Olmstead and Perry Williamson and also raised by our membership at the annual meeting last October concerning sustainability, fairness and accountability to mention just a few. I plan on keeping you in the loop through periodic reporting in Snippets as we progress though the year. If you have contributions to the effort in the form of ideas, time, or money please do not hesitate to contact one of us and pass them along. The task force is available to you and your opinions are important to us.
Have a wonderful and a productive 2015!
Mark Nielsen

Moving On and Back to Painting...
Happy New Year Everyone!
As our first month as VWS Co-Directors of Communications, we apologize for the late newsletter this month. With the transition of taking it over right around the holidays, we ran into a few unexpected delays! Sarah Rosedahl did such a great job in this role and we thank her for showing us the ropes!
From now on, please send all newsletter submissions to vwsnews@gmail.com which we will both read regularly.
Sincerely,
Lynn Pratt & Kate Jackson

Framing & Matting Guidelines for All Shows*
Mats: sole or top mats will be white or off white. If a bottom mat is used, it may be white, off white or colored. Filets may be used. Mats are not required for all paintings, but if you are not framing your painting, archival spacers must be used.
Frames: frames must be sturdy, in excellent condition, and must be professional quality. They must have picture wire attached to the back from which to hang the painting.
The following are not acceptable for VWS shows:
- Float frames
- Table top frames
- Damaged frames or frames that are disjointed at the corners
- Saw tooth hangers
- Duct tape, masking tape or other non-professional-looking materials used on backs of frames.
- Sloppy construction as seen from front or back
Persons accepting paintings at drop off are instructed to not accept paintings if they do not meet these guidelines. Thank you for your cooperation.
*Occasionally there are special shows where other guidelines apply, which will be described in that show's prospectus and/or other communications. Otherwise, the above guidelines will apply to all VWS shows including hub shows.
This information can also be found on the VWS website:

I will be teaching two workshops in France next year. In May, I will be returning to Haut Baran, a lovely restored farm in the Lot Valley region of Southwest France. This is actually a 10 day art vacation which combines plein air painting with sightseeing and gourmet dining. If you have never been to France before, this is a perfect opportunity to come and experience France in a unique and intimate setting. For more information, contact me at robertjobrienart@gmail.com. Haut Baran's website is www.hautbaran.com (attached image is of Haut Baran) In June, I will be conducting a seven day workshop at Bastide Avellanne in Provence. This class will run from June 24 through July1. The lavender will be in full bloom and will make for some exquisite painting for sure. To find out more about Bastide Avellanne visit their website at www.bastideavellanne.com. Information and rates for both workshops can also be found on my website: www.robertjobrien.com Lynn D. Pratt
I will be starting two new sessions of watercolor classes in January.
Classes will run for four weeks from 5:45-8:45, one night a week, in Pawlet, Vermont! (Four classes total per session.)
The BEGINNER Session will be Tuesdays:
Jan 20, 27, Feb 3, 10
The INTERMEDIATE Session will be Wednesdays:
Jan 21, 28, Feb 4, 11
All are welcome to sign up! Feel free to invite friends to sign up with you for a fun night out! There are 4 weeks of class, once per week, 3 hours per class (12 hours total) for $100.
Beginner Class
The first two classes start with the basics of watercolor like how to paint flat & graded washes, how to make clouds, blend and shade to make a rounded object, and how to achieve correct values by mixing and layering. The last two classes we will do a finished painting each class.
If you have only dabbled with watercolor, not done it for a long time or never used it before, this is the perfect class for you!
Intermediate Class
In each class we will do a finished painting, each focusing on certain elements or skills.
If you have taken my beginner class before or know how to paint flat & graded washes, make clouds, blend and shade to make a rounded object, and how to achieve correct values by mixing and layering, then this is the perfect class for you!
Please let me know if you are interested in this class and I can send you the materials list. Email me for details! pratt.lynn@gmail.com
Space will be very limited so don't wait!

It is very exciting to have Holbein, USA as a VWS Partner. Being a Vermont based art supplier and full time supporter of arts and the artists who make them, it is a perfect fit for both of us. Please get to know Holbein and support them not only because they are one of our partners, but because they are a world leader in colors and mediums for artists. The Landgrove Inn is the premier, all-in-one lodging, dining and fun space in which to create, exhibit and learn. Check out the 2015 workshop schedule at Landgrove Inn, or call 802 824-6673.
