December's Home Stretch

December is "wrap it up" time.  Many of us are thinking about winding down 2014 and some of us are also starting to plan for 2015.

You're probably doing the same in your busy lives.  As you start thinking about 2015 please remember that your VWS dues for 2015 are due by the 1st of the year.  Of course this reminder does not apply to those of you who have already sent your dues in!  The VWS is a pretty active organization with lots of plans and your dues are the underpinning of our organization.

In the meantime, your Board of Directors just met for a day in mid November to plan for 2015.  Every year we gather incoming board members and those of us that are staying on for another year to review our year's activities and weigh it against our previous goals.   It is a time when we revise and in some cases set new goals for ourselves for the upcoming year.  Notes from all our board meetings are posted on our website for anyone who is interested.

Finally, enjoy your holidays and your loved ones.

Sincerely,

Mark Nielsen, President

EXHIBITIONS & EVENTS

Framing & Matting Guidelines for All Shows*

Mats:   sole or top mats will be white or off white.  If a bottom mat is used, it may be white, off white or colored.  Filets may be used. Mats are not required for all paintings, but if you are not framing your painting, archival spacers must be used.

Frames:  frames must be sturdy, in excellent condition, and must be professional quality.  They must have picture wire attached to the back from which to hang the painting.

The following are not acceptable for VWS shows:

  • Float frames
  • Table top frames
  • Damaged frames or frames that are disjointed at the corners
  • Saw tooth hangers
  • Duct tape, masking tape or other non-professional-looking materials used on backs of frames.
  • Sloppy construction as seen from front or back

Persons accepting paintings at drop off are instructed to not accept paintings if they do not meet these guidelines.  Thank you for your cooperation.

*Occasionally there are special shows where other guidelines apply, which will be described in that show's prospectus and/or other communications.  Otherwise, the above guidelines will apply to all VWS shows including hub shows.

VWS White River Junction Hub News

White River Junction Hub delighted in having an avid watercolorist
deliver an inspiring demo at the Thompson Center in Woodstock, Vt. on Nov. 1st. Topic was 'Keep it Loose'.  She had a lot of information about contrast of warm and cool, light and dark but "don't sweat it.  Just get it on the paper, have fun and try it."  Keep it Loose!  We all come home with an exciting new   way to look at our own work. Check out her web site wwwjoanhoffman.com.

Hub "Point Person"

If you are interested in becoming the leader for the Burlington/St. Albans hub area, please let me or Pam Dexter know.  After 2 ½ years it is time for someone else to "take the reigns" and bring some different ideas and events to the 60 or so members of the hub.

Annelein Beukenkamp

This summer two of my paintings were selected for the Adirondack National Exhibition of American Watercolors.  Juried by William Vrscak, the show has since closed, but one painting was selected for the travel show.

Bryan Memorial Gallery in Jeffersonville is currently hosting their Land & Light & Water & Air show from September 12 to December 28. I have one floral painting in the show.

I just received the catalog from the World Watercolour Competition and my two paintings are published as one of 295 finalists out of 1891 paintings submitted. Unfortunately I missed the final cut of 23 exhibiting artists.

Robert O'Brien

I will be teaching two workshops in France next year. In May, I will be returning to Haut Baran, a lovely restored farm in the Lot Valley region of Southwest France. This is actually a 10 day art vacation which combines plein air painting with sightseeing and gourmet dining. If you have never been to France before, this is a perfect opportunity to come and experience France in a unique and intimate setting. For more information, contact me at robertjobrienart@gmail.com. Haut Baran's website is www.hautbaran.com (attached image is of Haut Baran)

In June, I will be conducting a seven day workshop at Bastide Avellanne in Provence. This class will run from June 24 through July1. The lavender will be in full bloom and will make for some exquisite painting for sure. To find out more about Bastide Avellanne visit their website at www.bastideavellanne.com. Information and rates for both workshops can also be found on my website: www.robertjobrien.com

 Marijke Westberg

Marijke Westberg has written and illustrated a children's fairytale; hardcover, 32 pages full of watercolor scenes; the story of how Gnomes came to Vermont!  A book signing will be held on December 10th, from 4-6, at the Landgrove Inn.

Published by Northshire Book Store, the book is available at both their stores, and after the 10th also at the Landgrove Inn.

VWS PARTNERS

holbein logo

It is very exciting to have Holbein, USA as a VWS Partner.  Being a Vermont based art supplier and full time supporter of arts and the artists who make them, it is a perfect fit for both of us.   Please get to know Holbein and support them not only because they are one of our partners, but because they are a world leader in  colors and mediums for artists.
