Save the Dates
Get out your calendars and pencils; I want to encourage you to save two dates. They are September 27th and October 19th. What's going on? Read on.
Sunday, September 27th from 3PM to 5PM, is the opening reception for the VWS Fall Juried show. There will be thirty works exhibited in the Phelps Barn in Grafton Vt and presentations of the awards will be made during the reception.
Sunday, October 19th from 9:30 check in time to 3:30 pm closing we will have our annual business meeting. We will gather at The Quechee Club, as we have in years past to do the business of the Vermont Watercolor Society. It is important to our organizations health and vitality that you make every effort to participate. By the way, it can be fun and entertaining not just informative so please pencil this one in.
Link to location of The Quechee Club, http://www.quecheeclub.com/default.aspx?p=DynamicModule&pageid=399597&ssid=322811&vnf=1
Both dates offer a time to reconnect with your fellow watercolor enthusiasts and friends. I plan on being there of course and I am looking forward to see you all and to hearing what you are up to.
A word on the fees we charge to enter shows and to attend our two annual meetings. The VWS charges an entry fee for submitting works for shows to cover the costs of putting on the show. We charge a fee of $35 to attend our two annual meetings to cover the costs of these two meetings. These are essentially "break even" programs. However, for the last several years the VWS has had a policy not to exclude participation from these activities for financial hardship reasons, so, if you feel that you cannot afford the cost you can request a reduced rate down to zero depending on what you deem is affordable. We will not pry. It is an honor system.
In the meantime, I hope you all are finding time to do your painting!
Best Wishes.
Mark Nielsen, VWS President

The following are not acceptable for VWS shows:
- Float frames
- Table top frames
- Damaged frames or frames that are disjointed at the corners
- Saw tooth hangers
- Duct tape, masking tape or other non-professional-looking materials used on backs of frames.
- Sloppy construction as seen from front or back
Persons accepting paintings at drop off are instructed to not accept paintings if they do not meet these guidelines. Thank you for your cooperation.

VWS Burlington/St. Albans Hub News
Lynn Cummings
Three Mountain Café Show
The hub show at Three Mountain Cafe in Waitsfield came down this week. Thanks to all who participated, organized, delivered and retrieved the paintings. Special thanks to Gary Eckhardt for making this possible.
David Becker Workshops
Internationally-known art instructor and fine artist David Becker is teaching 2 1-day workshops for the hub at VT Art Supply/Black Horse in Burlington. 25 hub members are participating in one or both days' workshops. David is from the Chicago area and is well known for teaching at the Holbein Event in Colchester every July. David will be available next year before and after the Holbein Event to teach for other organizations in VT. If your hub or another art organization is interested in having David teach please email him at: David@DavidRBecker.com Thanks to all participating in this hub-supported event.
Late Fall/Early Winter Hub Show
I am working on a venue for a hub show between now and the end of the year. As soon as I get confirmation I will email everyone in this hub. Just in case the place I am negotiating falls through, does anyone know of a gallery or commercial space with lots of traffic where we might have a hub show? Please email: Lynn.Cummings@uvm.edu if you do. As usual, it will require some volunteers to help with the show.
Hub "Point Person"
If you are interested in becoming the leader for the Burlington/St. Albans hub area, please let me or Pam Dexter know. After 2 ˝ years it is time for someone else to "take the reigns" and bring some different ideas and events to the 60 or so members of the hub.

Bill Sharpe and Cindy Crawford
Marsh-Billings-Rockefellar National Park
WRJ Hub Group enjoyed another 'Picnic and Plein Air' on Aug 6th. Bill Sharpe, Kate Reeves, Nancy Leavitt-Reibel, Lois Macuga and Cindy Crawford gathered at the Marsh-Billings-Rockefellar National Park at peak bloom in the formal gardens. It was good to welcome the newcomers Bill and Nancy to our Hub. Capturing 'The Light' is always a challenge and the day was perfect for plein air. I think we all learned something.

A lot has been happening in the watercolor world here. Third Prize was won at the Copley Society, Boston, for the watercolor "Wood and Stream." That and another watercolor were part of the "Shimmer" exhibition at the Copley. A watercolor won the Moosewalk Gallery Award at the Green Mountain Watercolor Exhibition in Waitsfield. Three watercolors will be on exhibit at the Bennington Center for the Arts, one of which is in the Laumeister Fine Art Competition there. Two watercolors will be exhibited at the Bryan Gallery for the "Land and Light" show. Three watercolors will be "in the movies" as part of the set design for the upcoming feature film, "Sea of Trees," shooting near Worchester, MA, and Japan. Last but not least, "Osprey" was accepted into the 2014 NWS Annual International Exhibition.

It is very exciting to have Holbein, USA as a VWS Partner. Being a Vermont based art supplier and full time supporter of arts and the artists who make them, it is a perfect fit for both of us. Please get to know Holbein and support them not only because they are one of our partners, but because they are a world leader in colors and mediums for artists. The Landgrove Inn is the premier, all-in-one lodging, dining and fun space in which to create, exhibit and learn. Check out the 2010 workshop schedule at Landgrove Inn, or call 802 824-6673.
