Making Room for Watercolors
If your schedule is anything like mine you're a busy person. In fact your probably a very busy person who budgets your time as best as you can. Family and work obligations, after school activities, summer guests, and house chores. It all adds up to not a lot of time to paint.
For us, the question is how and when will we sit down and get some painting in. In my case, I have had painting deadlines that have helped me to put something else aside so that I can finish my paintings on time.
I also signed up a long time ago for the VWS watercolor workshop by John Salminen before my other commitments were bearing down on me! As the workshop grew closer I started to think I might have to cancel and forfeit the deposit. But I stuck to my plan and was glad that I did. It was my first VWS workshop and it was an intense 5 days of painting and learning. There were about 18 other equally dedicated souls in the workshop, each and every one of them had juggled their lives with spouses and children, parents, and bosses to gather and share in the experience.
Juggling and having partners who will juggle with you really helps when these special opportunities come along.
I also have reworked my studio space to give myself a better painting area, making it comfortable and inviting. Now it is a place I want to be in and that helps believe it or not.
Back to my painting!
Best Regards.
Mark Nielsen, VWS President

Burlington/St. Albans Hub News
Life Drawing/Painting
There are several venues for working from live models in the Burlington/Shelburne area one of which is being organized by Charles Norris-Brown. If you are interested in working from the figure, please contact Charles at conewango@gmail.com. We also took part in a figure session in Randolph, and if anyone farther afield from Burlington is interested in setting something up in your area, contact Charles as well and he may be able to help out.
Hub Volunteers
Our hub is still in need of greater volunteer participation for both hub and full VWS activities. We'd love to have a volunteer (or two) to coordinate painting pickups and dropoffs, organize carpools to various activities and other small tasks. Without volunteer efforts, there will not be any activities, as VWS is an all-volunteer organization. Please let me know what you are willing to help with, and if there are other events that you'd like for our hub to offer. (email: Lynn.Cummings@uvm.edu)

I will be offering a three day w/c workshop on the Cape from September 22-24. It will be held at the Falmouth Artist Guild at the Falmouth Art Center, 137 Gifford St. Falmouth MA 022541. The focus will be plein air and landscape painting. Tuition is $325 for members and $375 for non-members.

On the first day, students will learn some basic techniques of landscape painting in a classroom setting working from photo reference. The class will start with a demonstration by the instructor followed by class painting. Days two and three will focus on landscape painting outdoors (weather permitting) with a demonstration by the instructor at the beginning of each session. The instructor will provide hands on assistance to every student. There will be a critique at the end of each class. The course will emphasize composition, color mixing, values, and painting light and shadow. Drybrush painting and other techniques will also be introduced. It is open to all levels. Some drawing experience is recommended.
Barbara Pafume
I currently have a solo show in Gallery 3 at Southern Vermont Art Center (SVA) in Manchester, VT through July 20th. July 13th, I will be joining several other featured artists at SVA to give an Artist's Talk to the public on inspiration, methods and procedures I use to do my paintings.
On Tuesday, July 8th - August 26th, I begin teaching classes at SVA, Manchester. Painting Your Way classes are every Tuesday for 8 weeks, 9:30 am - 4:30 pm and are open to all levels and artists may sign up for all 8 or as many of those classes as they wish. Artists working in watercolor, water-based oils, oils and acrylic are welcome. Call the Art Center for details and to register at 802-362-1405. This is my 34th year teaching at SVA.
My 8 week course offers students the continuity that not only inspires creativity through structured lessons but allows artists time to practice and experiment with new techniques.
Each class begins with a creativity exercise to focus artistic attention, followed by a structured lesson on the important elements of a successful painting.
I teach how to use composition, color, perspective, balance, design and value relationship to create dramatic paintings! I also emphasize the importance of fun, play and laughter and the health benefits to the creative process! The strategies and information I teach will help artists find success whether painting in a realistic, impressionistic or abstract style of expression and representation. I do demonstrations on an individual basis, upon request and will never touch a student's painting to do so. In this class, you may expect to learn much, work hard, laugh and have a great time!
June 29th - July 26th , I also have will have two paintings on exhibit at the Green Mountain Watercolor Exhibition in the Red Barn Gallery at the Lareau Farm Inn in Waitsfield. August 13, 14, 15th, I will be teaching a painting workshop also at the Lareau Farm Inn. Please call Lareau Farm Inn for reservations, 802-496-4949 or me at 802-849-6858.

Mooreland Farm Paint-Out
Paint-Out July 15, 2014 on the Mooreland Farm on Town Line Road above Springfield. This is a beautiful location for our event and much more desirable than the Toonerville Bridge area that was previously mentioned. The Mooreland Farm has several barns, gardens, tractors, trucks, and beautiful vistas. The owners are delighted that we are coming on that Tuesday.
You don't even have to bring your own lunch. I will order wraps, drinks, water, etc for everyone. We will meet in the Great Hall in downtown Springfield between 9:15 and 9:45. Maps will be available there, but hopefully we can all tandem up to the farm which is about 4 miles above Springfield. We'll paint until about 3pm, then travel back down to the Great Hall to share our work. And what a beautiful space this is! It's in a renovated factory on the river there. Please bring a mat (and a frame if you wish) for your masterpieces. We'll have refreshments there for all.
As an added opportunity you can agree to display your painting in the Great Hall during an upcoming exhibit in September. Nancy Lanue will explain more at that time.
Give Diane Bell a call at 802 824 6195 or email your RSVP to dgbell_adelphia1@comcast.net. Please try to come and bring a friend. VWS Members and non-members are welcome.
