More Thank Yous
Recently I received this photo from Charles Norris-Brown and I wanted to share it with you. It is our new Student Support Kit. This is the real deal not just a mock up, the VWS is now sitting on 60 of these kits and we can thank Charles for heading up this effort, Claudia Carl who helped in the assembly of the paints into the pallets and Amanda Amend who did the initial research pricing up the bulk order of materials and to Robert O'Brien and Lynn Pratt for their input. We can also thank Artists Mediums who not only pitched in to help with the packaging but gave us a great bulk purchase deal and has generously included a discount in the kits for additional art supplies. And finally thanks to our VWS board of directors for having the faith to pursue this idea.
Now our job is to get these terrific kits into the hands of students who could use a break and put them to good use! Please let me know if you would like to get involved in this part of the project.
Thanks to all of you and now let's make sure this gets off the ground!
Sincerely,
Mark

Frames: frames must be sturdy, in excellent condition, and must be professional quality. They must have picture wire attached to the back from which to hang the painting.
The following are not acceptable for VWS shows:

The Lowdown on Hubs: Part II
Beyond the Beginning
It's one thing to initiate a new program; it's another to keep it strong, vital and relevant. The Board of Directors has offered the opportunity to participate in local VWS events and activities in an effort to reach out to you. The key to the future of our Hub program is YOU. Our VWS organization relies solely on volunteers. Depending on volunteers to keep things afloat can be risky and makes us vulnerable.
Regarding our Hubs there are three volunteer positions: Hub Point Person, Hub member and Director of Hubs. As described previously our Point People agree to receive and forward information and oversee Hub events. Due to their commitment to the VWS, many of our Point People currently are the primary organizers of Hub events. In my mind, overseeing events doesn't mean they are to do it all. It does mean they keep in touch with everyone and see that events are going well and following VWS procedures (financially). The Director of Hubs is the link between the Hubs and the Board of Directors, oversees Hub funding and organizes the annual Point Person Rally.
Hub members play an important role in the Hub program. The degree to which members participate affects the frequency and relevance of Hub activities. Let's review the range of participation. Some members are not at all interested in Hub activities and choose not to participate, which is just fine. Some members would like to offer ideas and resources but are not sure if that is their place or how to communicate what they can offer. Some members have suggestions, contacts for activities or meeting places and they pass that on to their Point Person for consideration. Other members go a step further and offer to help with planning an event which is of interest to them. This result is a team effort making the event organization very do-able. Occasionally an event is coordinated and run by a group larger than two making the tasks very small and easy for everyone. The last two arrangements have made organizing Hub events more reasonable for all the volunteers involved.
The type of Hub event dictates the amount of volunteer time needed. Simple events such as Pot Luck Dinners, "Salons", critiques or demonstrations need a place to meet and someone to lead the event. If materials are required, organization steps up a bit to match the materials and number of participants. When funding is requested from the VWS, proper procedures must be followed and adds a bit more time to the planning. In my opinion, shows are the most "volunteer time intensive" as people, art work, show site, hanging and removing paintings, opening reception and publicity require considerable coordination.
Part III: Hub Events-what's the Hubbub all about?

Burlington/St. Albans Hub News
"Serendipitous Color" Show
The VWS Burlington/St. Albans Hub will be holding a non-juried show of about 12 - 15 works of art in August, called "Serendipitous Color". There are about 6 spots left, so please email Lynn.Cummings@uvm.edu to indicate your interest in participating in this show. Venue: 3 Mountain Cafe, 107 Mad River Green, Waitsfield Information to Lynn via email by: July 11 with the name of painting, size, price
Drop off: Friday, Aug. 1, 11 - noon Hanging: Friday, Aug. 1, noon on Pick up: Tuesday, Sept. 2, 11 - noon
Life Drawing/Painting
There are several venues for working from live models in the Burlington/Shelburne area one of which is being organized by Charles Norris-Brown. If you are interested in working from the figure, please contact Charles at conewango@gmail.com. We also took part in a figure session in Randolph, and if anyone farther afield from Burlington is interested in setting something up in your area, contact Charles as well and he may be able to help out.
Hub Volunteers
Our hub is still in need of greater volunteer participation for both hub and full VWS activities. We'd love to have a volunteer (or two) to coordinate painting pickups and dropoffs, organize carpools to various activities and other small tasks. Without volunteer efforts, there will not be any activities, as VWS is an all-volunteer organization. Please let me know what you are willing to help with, and if there are other events that you'd like for our hub to offer. (email: Lynn.Cummings@uvm.edu)
