PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Board Service
First things first, thank you Claudia for your unflappable efforts not only for organizing this most recent spring meeting but for all your efforts. The programming that you have managed to accomplish has truly enriched our members experiences and at the same time has helped the VWS fulfill our mission.
While I am thanking board members, thank you Amanda for your help in transferring our bank accounts and setting up our new VWS Education Fund, and to Charles for spearheading the assembly of our student kits, and to Robert and Loretta who have been plugging away at finding suitable venues for future VWS shows.
Yes it's true board service is work but it can be fun and rewarding. Just ask our newest board members Charles and Michelle. I bet they would tell you that they do feel they are making a difference for the VWS, and that it has not been too painful!
This coming November at our annual business meeting we will need to fill a number of board positions, and I would like you to seriously think about whether you could find some time to serve the VWS as a board member. I know it is not for everyone but it is not rocket science either. The VWS now carries a general liability insurance policy and we have directors and officers insurance as well so if you think you would like to serve please know that your covered and do not have to worry about being personally responsible in any potential legal matters. A term is a two year commitment.
I plan on running for President for another two years (unless someone else is just dying to do the job) this November and Tony will continue to fill the role of Vice-President. We will be looking for a number of new board members. We will need to fill the following positions:
Secretary (Thank you Reggie)
Treasurer (Thank you Amanda)
Director of Programs (Thank you Claudia)
Director of Communications (Thank you Sarah)
Director of Hubs (Thank you Pam)
Please do not assume that someone else will step forward. If this is something that you can consider, please talk to me and we can talk about the responsibilities and the tasks that come with any of these positions.
Thank you.
Mark Nielsen, President

Education Fund
Our education and outreach programs are a big success, and we are starting to get donations from VWS members for our Education Fund. Thank you!! Our bookkeeper asks that when you send a donation, please write a separate check to the VWS Education Fund, rather than including the donation in a check with membership dues. We now have a separate bank account for that fund, and separate checks will make sure that all of your donation goes to that program. Thanks!!

We also took part in a figure session in Randolph, and if anyone farther afield from Burlington is interested in setting something up in your area, contact Charles as well and he may be able to help out.
Hub Volunteers
Our hub is still in need of greater volunteer participation for both hub and full VWS activities. We'd love to have a volunteer (or two) to coordinate painting pickups and dropoffs, organize carpools to various activities and other small tasks. Without volunteer efforts, there will not be any activities, as VWS is an all-volunteer organization. Please let me know what you are willing to help with, and if there are other events that you'd like for our hub to offer. (email: Lynn.Cummings@uvm.edu)

Art can be dropped off between 10:00AM and 2:00PM on Saturday May 10th or the following Monday-Wednesday. Drop off times TBD. Hanging fee is $15/per piece, and there is no commission for sales. The hanging fee will also provide the artist with a free one-year membership in Friends of the Refuge.
Subjects for the Art Show Anything related to what might be found in a landscape such as at the Wildlife Refuge-- water, lake, river, marsh, forest, wildlife, wildflowers, fields, bugs, weeds, sky, people, etc., and interpretations of any of these. Art does not need to be created on the Refuge or with actual Refuge subjects. Barns and farmland? Yes, the land used to be farmed and that life and history are still here. Native Americans? Yes, the land was certainly used by Native Americans, and still is. City streets, skyscrapers, ocean beaches? Nope, nothing like that on this Refuge.
