VWS Board votes to create the VWS Education Fund!

The VWS is now creating a separate fund dedicated to financing our educational and charitable activities.  To do this we have voted to open the fund with $5000 or our $15,000 held in our reserve account.   This would leave $10,000 in our reserve fund which would be enough to fully recover in the event that we woke up tomorrow and discovered that our operating fund had been cleaned out.  Not that we are inviting that sort of thing, just that we are prepared to conduct business as usual should such a thing occur.

With the creation of this stand alone fund we will be in a position to accept donations to further the public educational programming that we are pursuing.  For instance, $50 will pay for a VWS Watercolor Kit for one student.  It includes a pallet and good brushes that the student will own so that the painting can continue beyond the class room.  This year the Fund will be creating 60 student kits and we welcome suggestions from our membership on schools and after school programs that may be interested in the opportunity that we are offering to their students.

It is the understanding of this board that when a fiscal year ends and if we show a profit that we will shift the profits into the VWS Education Fund.  Profits in our organization are realized primarily though the workshops we offer and depend largely on how successful those workshops turn out.  Once we have established a bit more of a track record with some of these programs like the Student Support Program,  we may pursue matching grant funds from organizations such as the Vermont Council of the Arts to grow our programming capacity.

At the spring meeting in Lake Morey Resort, Fairlee VT this April 27th Lynn Pratt will be showing a video done by a local TV station covering her after school class of six students who benefited from the VWS educational program.  It is truly heartwarming.  I urge you to make an effort attend, sign up now with Claudia Carl.

The big picture is that we plan to maintain approximately $10,000 in our operating account, $10,000 in our Reserve Fund and grow the Education Fund as we can.  We would not commit to spending more than what we had in that fund at any time without a special vote from the board.  The VWS Fund will be sustained with our profits, though grants from other organizations and through donations to the fund.

Once we have the financial pieces in place we will provide you with specifics on how to make a donation to the fund.  If you want to suggest a contact person at a particular school that you would like me to reach out to just email me with the information and I will follow up.

Respectfully

Mark Nielsen, President

Mats:   sole or top mats will be white or off white.  If a bottom mat is used, it may be white, off white or colored.  Filets may be used. Mats are not required for all paintings, but if you are not framing your painting, archival spacers must be used.

Frames:  frames must be sturdy, in excellent condition, and must be professional quality.  They must have picture wire attached to the back from which to hang the painting.

The following are not acceptable for VWS shows:

  • Float frames
  • Table top frames
  • Damaged frames or frames that are disjointed at the corners
  • Saw tooth hangers
  • Duct tape, masking tape or other non-professional-looking materials used on backs of frames.
  • Sloppy construction as seen from front or back

HUB
NEWS

The Lowdown on our Hubs

Part 1: How did Hubs begin?

Several years ago your Board of Directors (BOD) decided to create a one-of-a kind program which they called Hubs.  It was designed to provide additional programming for our members on a regional basis.  As you all know getting around Vermont is not easy or quick. By supporting regional activities our BOD hoped to provide the membership with convenient events thus making it easier for all members to participate in the VWS.

The Hub program began with an assessment of where our membership was most concentrated.  Geographical areas, Hubs, were defined according to these natural groupings.  This effort was expected to address the issue of easily accessed VWS activities.  Furthermore, it was envisioned that volunteers would assume the role of Point Person to process and forward information throughout the Hub and larger VWS as needed.  The Point People would also oversee Hub activities.  It was expected that each Hub would determine the events of interest to them.

The Point People - the "centers" of each Hub, are the heart of the Hub program.  The role of the Point Person remained fluid beyond the basic tasks of communication and activity oversight.  This allowed each volunteer to determine the extent and limits of their volunteer commitment.  Other factors impacted each Point Person position differently.  Great variety in size of membership differentiates our Hubs.  Additionally some Hubs include a number of seasonal members creating a major change in size throughout the year.   Our New Hampshire Hub covers a rather large geographical area running from the Massachusetts border to well north of Hanover NH and as far east as the coast.  The urban Hubs have the benefit of many non-VWS art centered programs while our rural Hubs do not have numerous other artistic organizations -another situation that impacts the Point Person position.  Strictly defining the position of Point Person would interfere with recognizing regional differences. Flexibility in the role also allows for smooth transitions between volunteers.  Each Point Person will contribute their unique perspective and talents to the position.

The development of the Hubs program seemed to be going along well. The  goal was clear, the Hubs defined and a system of communication established. However any new program goes through a period of struggle to define itself and develop.   Although initiating the program seemed simple enough we found ourselves experiencing growth pains.  We needed to question, wrangle and test forcing the program to grow.  Our members were happy or unhappy with the drawing of regional lines they were happy/unhappy with the Hub they were assigned or they were happy/unhappy about the number or nature of their Hub's activities.  Everyone's input was important to the healthy growth of the program.  We struggled to balance our members' requests with what could practically be provided.    A" Guide to Hubs" is posted on the VWS website if you are interested in more details.  We seem to have settled into a workable organization but that is not to say all members are satisfied or that the Hub program will not need further tweaking.

Next month Part II:  Hubs, Beyond the Beginning

A State Hub meeting is scheduled for Saturday May 10, 2014, Bethany Church, Montpelier, VT.  It is the annual rally for our Point People, however others interested in the Hub program are welcome to attend and participate.  Our theme is:" Building on our Strengths".

If you would like to attend this meeting or have comments regarding our Hubs, please contact Pam Dexter, Director of Hubs, phdex.nest@gmail.com,

Or phone me (603) 352-1184 after April 30, 2014.

Burlington/St. Albans Hub News

Life Drawing/Painting

There are several venues for working from live models in the Burlington/Shelburne area one of which is being organized by Charles Norris-Brown. If you are interested in working from the figure, please contact Charles at conewango@gmail.com. We also took part in a figure session in Randolph, and if anyone farther afield from Burlington is interested in setting something up in your area, contact Charles as well and he may be able to help out.

Hub Volunteers

Our hub is still in need of greater volunteer participation for both hub and full VWS activities.  We'd love to have a volunteer (or two) to coordinate painting pickups and dropoffs, organize carpools to various activities and other small tasks.  Without volunteer efforts, there will not be any activities, as VWS is an all-volunteer organization.  Please let me know what you are willing to help with, and if there are other events that you'd like for our hub to offer.  (email:  Lynn.Cummings@uvm.edu)

FEATURED
MEMBER PROFILE

Each month we feature a VWS member in this newsletter. This month we welcome:

Charles Norris-Brown

Born 1946 in the hills of northern Pennsylvania -- grew up wandering the forests and fishing in streams around the Allegheny National Forest. I still have an old hunting camp there with my brothers that my grandfather started in 1917 and my father took over in 1938 -- a place full of memories. My ancestors settled this upper Appalachian region, some running saw mills, another a professional deer hunter who served in the Civil War. I grew up not far from the Seneca Nation of Iroquois and was fascinated with the history and ways of the Native Americans. The book The Light in the Forest will always be one of my favorites. I became an Eagle Scout and one of my projects was to clean up around the grave of the famous Seneca Chief Cornplanter. I sat on the hillside with other protesters when the US built the dam at Kinzua, made famous in a song sung by Johnny Cash: "As Long as the Grass Shall Grow."

I was an artist since childhood. I had a great art teachers in both middle and high school and went on to major in art and architecture at Penn State. I switched majors and eventually chose to study elsewhere, ending up in Sweden and finishing my PhD in Sociology and Anthropology in 1984 with a focus on India. I never did return to training in art but over the years kept up figurative studies in pencil and charcoal plus some oil painting and acrylics here and there. I did not return to classes until returning to the USA when I took watercolor classes in western Massachusetts starting in 1997 in the Jeanne Dobie tradition. Although I have followed the changes in pigment selections, I have stuck to this tradition which combines well with my somewhat fine lines and sensual colors. My themes are most often figurative reflecting a fascination with the human form but also reflect my deep feelings about the many sides of nature.

My anthropology took me to India and Nepal, to the rainforest of Borneo, and even to the hills and hollows of central Appalachia. I visited the Corbett Tiger Reserve in India in 1999 as part of my attempts to develop projects in tiger conservation. I had taken my watercolors with me, and when I asked some local people what they would suggest I do to help save the tigers they told me to write and illustrate children's books. I finished an online course in children's book writing in 2002 but it was not until 2011 when I returned to South Asia and the tiger reserves that I was able to follow up on that suggestion. Although I have not yet published a children's book, I am deeply involved with trying to do so and am working on two themes, both of which have made up a big part of my life: India and Nepal, and the hills and forests of Pennsylvania and Vermont, my new home since 2004.

I have had studios around Pine Street and in Shelburne, but now work out of my home which I share with my dear wife Charlotte in Burlington Cohousing.

Classes

"Painting Studio: Painting The Found Object", Friday Mornings, 9:30am - 12:30pm, Williamstown, MA. During the winter months it can be hard to paint outside. Interior studies of found objects- from a pet's leash to a book on a bed stand- offer great opportunities for keeping observation skills sharp as well as playing with different color and composition. In this class, students will sketch and paint simple objects from varying points of view and with different focal points. Special attention will be paid to color mixing and placing values in a composition. This class is open to those working in any paint medium who want to dig in and work on their skills at any level. Class is offered through IS183, Stockbridge, MA - contact them to register - www.is183.org or (413) 298-5252.

Online Exhibit

Winter Hundred - Online Exhibit of One Hundred New Paintings.

The overall challenge is to produce 100 paintings in 100 days - more or less.  In addition to the 100 paintings, the challenge includes a goal of producing as many of them "en plein air" as possible. Only the weather is likely to keep me from painting outside, on location. The paintings will be posted in an exclusively on-line exhibit, one per day, for 100 days from January 20 - April 30, 2014.  The works will all be for sale on-line, with mats and backing but without frames. The exhibit can be seen at http://tonyconner.com/2014/01/20/1st-annual-winter-hundred/.
