PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

 Let 2014 Begin!

As I sit down to write this article, I am looking at my very beautiful catalog for the John Singer Sargent Watercolor show at the MFA.  I am remembering  what a great experience we had together on this field trip and the wonderful job Claudia Carl, VWS Program Director did to organize it.  It was a perfect way to close out 2013.

If you did not make it onto the bus in December,  you can kick off 2014 on January 9th with our follow-up field trip to see the show.  You can sign up with Claudia.

As always, new year's hold out such promise, and that is certainly true for the Vermont Watercolor Society as well.  I am truly excited about our newly forming student support program that introduces watercolors to student painters by providing paint, brushes, and paper for free.  If you would like to know more about this program please contact me and we can discuss how it works.

Another idea I would like to kick around with the board is the notion of a virtual juried show of our work.  This idea is being tried for the first time at the American Society of Marine Artists and if it works this idea for a virtual show could augment our own show schedule this year.

Oh, one more thing, please do not forget your annual membership dues ($35) if you  have not already sent it in, we need you and your energies for the upcoming year.

Respectfully,

Mark Nielsen, President VWS

John Singer Sargent Bus Trip - December

Fifty two enthusiastic artists, friends and relatives got together to visit the John Singer Sargent exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. The group arrived at the MFA a bit early and ran into technical difficulties. We weren't allowed in until our tour guides were ready. Once we did get under way the five groups were led through the permanent collection first with a view of some wonderful portraits one of which was particularly interesting since the story that went with it was fun. There are four sisters hanging around a large entry room with huge columns and these wonderful monster urns. On either side of the portrait are the very urns that were captured in the painting. The story goes that the Boit family had these urns along with some other treasures shipped back and forth to Europe when ever they were living abroad for months at a time. Our docent, Ellen, told us the conservationists in the past found notes that the Boit girls had written and thrown inside the urns. What a hoot! From here we were led down to the watercolors. With 90 in the collection there are more than we could see with the first run through. The collection is displayed in rooms with different themes which was very well done. Of course each of the works is so inspiring to be able to study up close. It has only been a few days but I want to go back already! It turned out to be well worth the LONG day and the traffic we had to get past but watching a Linda Kemp DVD on the way home helped. This was such an amazing collection to see in person that I highly urge everyone to see this possible once in a lifetime event.

Framing & Matting Guidelines for All Shows*

Mats:   sole or top mats will be white or off white.  If a bottom mat is used, it may be white, off white or colored.  Filets may be used. Mats are not required for all paintings, but if you are not framing your painting, archival spacers must be used.

Frames:  frames must be sturdy, in excellent condition, and must be professional quality.  They must have picture wire attached to the back from which to hang the painting.

The following are not acceptable for VWS shows:

  • Float frames
  • Table top frames
  • Damaged frames or frames that are disjointed at the corners
  • Saw tooth hangers
  • Duct tape, masking tape or other non-professional-looking materials used on backs of frames.
  • Sloppy construction as seen from front or back

Persons accepting paintings at drop off are instructed to not accept paintings if they do not meet these guidelines.  Thank you for your cooperation.

*Occasionally there are special shows where other guidelines apply, which will be described in that show's prospectus and/or other communications.  Otherwise, the above guidelines will apply to all VWS shows including hub shows.

These sessions,  which started as a hub activity last fall, have expanded and now are open to other artists in the community.  Any artist can attend these sessions which now meet in the upstairs classroom at Black Horse Art, 277 Pine St., Burlington.   There is a model every Wednesday night from 6 - 9 PM, and every Sunday afternoon from 2 - 5 PM.  Participants must register in advance by contacting Black Horse Art Supply at:  860-4972.  Charles Norris-Brown is organizing discussion sessions for the VWS members who attend these sessions.  You may work in whatever medium you wish, and there is no instruction.

Hub Volunteers

Our hub is still in need of greater volunteer participation for both hub and full VWS activities.  We'd love to have a volunteer (or two) to coordinate painting pickups and dropoffs, organize carpools to various activities and other small tasks.  Without volunteer efforts, there will not be any activities, as VWS is an all-volunteer organization.  Please let me know what you are willing to help with, and if there are other events that you'd like for our hub to offer.  (email:  Lynn.Cummings@uvm.edu)

This class is open to those working in any paint medium who want to dig in and work on their skills at any level. Materials list for beginners provided upon demand; otherwise bring what you enjoy using. Class is offered through IS183 - www.is183.org-  Contact them to register - (413) 298-5252
