Annual Meeting Recap

For those of you who were unable to attend our annual fall meeting here is the recap.

Our business meeting opened with a big thank you to Lois Mucaga and the Quechee Club for making the facility available at a reduced rate.  Then by unanimous vote we adopted the proposed by-law paragraph 9 article VI, proposed budget,  and the slate of candidates for open board positions including Charles Norris Brown who volunteered from the floor to be considered for the position of Director of Volunteers.  Beginning Jan 1st your board members will be as follows:

President                                 Mark Nielsen

   Vice President                         Tony Conner

Treasurer                                 Amanda Amend

Secretary                                 Reggie Springer

Hub Director                           Pam Dexter

Exhibitions Co-Director          Robert O'Brien

Exhibitions Co-Director          Loretta Weitzel

Communications Director       Sarah Rosedahl

Membership Director             Michelle LeBoeuf

Programs Director                   Claudia Carl

Volunteer Director                  Charles Norris Brown

Our outgoing Directors were thanked and their accomplishments were highlighted.  They are, Peter Land CPA, Rebecca Gottesman, Lynn Cummings and Joann DiNicola.

Several of our new members were present and were recognized.  Rebecca brought 4 guests to the meeting all of whom signed up to become VWS members.  Excellent recruiting Rebecca!

Two members earned signatory status, they were Carol Ann Centre and Ann Pember.   On getting home that night I had a message that three more achieved this honor with the result of the Bennington  show, they are Tony Conner,  Lynn Pratt, and Jeanette Fournier.  Congratulations to all of you.

Claudia Carl took the floor and described a number of programming initiatives including a VWS bus trip to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston to see the show on John Singer Sargent's watercolors, the new DVD sharing library, the John Salminen Workshop scheduled for this coming year, and the new student support program the VWS is launching to enhance our charity and educational mission.

Pam spoke briefly on the accomplishments of the Hubs noting that we would continue this initiative for at least another year and the increase in funding that the VWS was making toward the program.

Yinglei Zhang presented a fascinating and very fun mini workshop on Chinese Brush Painting using ink and rice paper.

We adjourned with the raffle.

Thanks to all of you who did manage to attend, it was so nice to share our time together.

Respectfully submitted,

Mark Nielsen

Framing & Matting Guidelines for All Shows*

Mats:   sole or top mats will be white or off white.  If a bottom mat is used, it may be white, off white or colored.  Filets may be used. Mats are not required for all paintings, but if you are not framing your painting, archival spacers must be used.

Frames:  frames must be sturdy, in excellent condition, and must be professional quality.  They must have picture wire attached to the back from which to hang the painting.

The following are not acceptable for VWS shows:

  • Float frames
  • Table top frames
  • Damaged frames or frames that are disjointed at the corners
  • Saw tooth hangers
  • Duck tape, masking tape or other non-professional-looking materials used on backs of frames.
  • Sloppy construction as seen from front or back

Persons accepting paintings at drop off are instructed to not accept paintings if they do not meet these guidelines.  Thank you for your cooperation.

*Occasionally there are special shows where other guidelines apply, which will be described in that show's prospectus and/or other communications.  Otherwise, the above guidelines will apply to all VWS shows including hub shows.

Life Drawing/Painting

These sessions,  which started as a hub activity last fall, have expanded and now are open to other artists in the community.  Any artist can attend these sessions which now meet in the upstairs classroom at Black Horse Art, 277 Pine St., Burlington.   There is a model every Wednesday night from 6 - 9 PM, and every Sunday afternoon from 2 - 5 PM.  Participants must register in advance by contacting Black Horse Art Supply at:  860-4972.  Charles Norris-Brown is organizing discussion sessions for the VWS members who attend these sessions.  You may work in whatever medium you wish, and there is no instruction.

Hub Volunteers

Our hub is still in need of greater volunteer participation for both hub and full VWS activities.  We'd love to have a volunteer (or two) to coordinate painting pickups and dropoffs, organize carpools to various activities and other small tasks.  Without volunteer efforts, there will not be any activities, as VWS is an all-volunteer organization.  Please let me know what you are willing to help with, and if there are other events that you'd like for our hub to offer.  (email:  Lynn.Cummings@uvm.edu)

FEATURED
MEMBER PROFILE

Each month we will feature a VWS member in this newsletter. This month we welcome former President, Secretary, newsletter editor and super all-around volunteer:

Cynthia Crawford

I joined VWS in 1998- practically at the inception.  I served as secretary for Presidents Irina Ohl and Annette Compton from 2000-2004, and then became president myself from 2006-2008.  For the last few years I was the editor of the VWS Newsletter.  It's just amazing to see how far we have come and what wonderful contributions everyone has made over the years-I feel very honored to have worked with so many of you.

My artwork evolved from an interest in drawing and painting as a child, and went  through many permutations. Along the way I studied Chinese Brush Painting and Japanese woodcut. My focus has almost always been on animals, so much of my work has been, naturally, animal portraits.  All this was, in the past, secondary to my career as a professional flutist, freelancing in Boston for about 20 years.  When I moved to Vermont, life slowed down. I still play music, but art, and now photography, have come forth as my main focus (so to speak).  I am working towards combining all of my interests into multi-media projects, and put together, last year, a presentation called "Birding With a Camera". It included my music, photography and art work, and it was presented at the Mascoma Audubon Society meeting-something I greatly enjoyed. (I am an avid bird-watcher as well...).  Watercolor seems to be my native medium-I even combine some of my photos and painting techniques in various ways to make "photo-paintings".  It is interesting how the digital world has changed our perception of all the arts- an ever evolving process.  I still love the simplicity of brush, paint and paper, though-it is so meditative and therapeutic.
