Outreach vs. Overreach Recently a VWS member, whose opinion I value, suggested to me that we may be overreaching with our efforts to reach out to the public at large with an education agenda about watercolors. I certainly hope not but this members point went something like this: Take a hard look at who the VWS is and ask yourself why do these members belong and what do they want to get out of the organization. Although he did not say this, I think he was suggesting that our members belong to the VWS for the social opportunities. He was intimating that if the VWS leadership is struggling to cultivate volunteers and could not fill vacancies on the board than perhaps we should re-evaluate what we are offering to and asking from the membership. At first I was just depressed, it is true that our Director of Volunteers position has been empty for the last year. It is also true that we do have to coax, beg, and bargain to fill board positions. I am making calls as I write this trying to fill FIVE upcoming board vacancies for the fall annual meeting on October 20th. I would be more depressed if I did not know that all volunteer organizations struggle to cull their leadership from their ranks. We live busy lives and we have many competing agendas for our time. I get it. Rather than getting depressed about all this lets ask a different question than the one my friend put to me. Let's ask the question: With all the raw talent and the experience in the organization and with the organizational capacity of the VWS what, where, and how can we share it? Over 75% of our membership are over the age of 50. Of the respondents to the 2012 VWS survey no one was under the age of 30. 70% of our members felt they had mastered the basics and many of those described themselves as advanced painters and some members have managed to make painting their career. So the VWS is mature, experienced, and talented. It seems to me that we are in possession of a great reservoir of focused energy and interest. It is not that much of a reach to imagine how we might reach out as educators on the medium that we all love so much. Best wishes, Mark
FALL MEETING - ATTENTION!
We are getting ready for the Fall Meeting with Yinglei Zhang on October 20th at the Quechee Club where she will talk to us about Chinese Brush Painting . We will be guided through an exercise using Chinese Brushes with ink and paint on rice paper with a slide show of Yinglei's art in the background. You can find the registration form on the website http://www.vermontwatercolorsociety.com/forms/vws-registration-forms/ and as always we will need a real head count for ordering supplies and lunch so put this on your calendar and get ready for a great time.
Thanks so much. Please RSVP via the registration form.

JOHN SALMINEN
June 23-27 2014
Realism Through Design
In this new offering, John will share his approach to painting the urban scene in watercolor. John will help participants in all aspects of painting a representational cityscape or town scene - choosing the subject, adding mood and creating emotional content, lighting the scene for dramatic effect, using photo reference in a meaningful way and most importantly, strengthening and enhancing representational painting through design. The workshop will include demonstrations, critiques and lots of one-on-one individual help. Whether you have never tried painting cityscapes or are an experienced urban painter, this workshop will be an invaluable opportunity to gain new painting insights.

Burlington/St. Albans Hub News
The Men's Room Show
Six of your fellow members will be showing their works, mostly in watercolor, as part of the Art Hop this weekend. VWS Artists: Charles Norris-Brown, Linda Disante, Anneleien Buekenkamp, Karen Casper, Marni McKitrick, and Jean Cannon.
Our work is on display at The Men's Room, 106 Main Street (where the big scissors is one the building), in Burlington. The theme is Figurative Art, and is mostly done from the sessions we have had with live models along Pine Street in Burlington. There will be a reception between 5 and 9 pm at The Men's Room, Friday September 6. We will have live music between 6 and 8. If you miss that or the Art Hop, our figurative work will remain as part of the Men's Room gallery until the end of October.
Plein Air Sessions
Annelein Beaukenkamp & Karen Casper have organized plein air painting sessions for this group. Hub members may bring an artist friend, if you wish, and you will need to register with Annelein or Karen. Minimum of 6 per session required.
Saturday October 5th. Shelburne Museum
For more information please contact Annelein beukwin@yahoo.com or Karen klcasper97@yahoo.com.
Life Drawing/Painting
These sessions, which started as a hub activity last fall, have expanded and now are open to other artists in the community. Any artist can attend these sessions which now meet in the upstairs classroom at Black Horse Art, 277 Pine St., Burlington. There is a model every Wednesday night from 6 - 9 PM, and every Sunday afternoon from 2 - 5 PM. Participants must register in advance by contacting Black Horse Art Supply at: 860-4972. Charles Norris-Brown is organizing discussion sessions for the VWS members who attend these sessions. You may work in whatever medium you wish, and there is no instruction.
Our hub is still in need of greater volunteer participation for both hub and full VWS activities. We'd love to have a volunteer (or two) to coordinate painting pickups and dropoffs, organize carpools to various activities and other small tasks. Without volunteer efforts, there will not be any activities, as VWS is an all-volunteer organization. Please let me know what you are willing to help with, and if there are other events that you'd like for our hub to offer. (email: Lynn.Cummings@uvm.edu)

Each month we will feature a VWS member in this newsletter. This month we welcome former board member and hard-working VWS volunteer:
Diane Bell
Weston is home for me since 2006 when I retired from Vermont Technical College at IBM. Since then I have painted nearly full time. My passion is watercolor , but I also enjoy getting involved. I took a position on the VWS board for four years as Director of Communications which I enjoyed very much. I hold a position on the Weston Business Council as chair of "Christmas in Weston," and I am a member of the area garden club and the Weston Women's Club. I enjoy meeting people and I feel a responsibility to contribute where I can. Besides the winters are long here and I like to be busy.
After moving here, I joined a group of local artists who painted weekly in Andover. Although that group has scattered I still paint plein-air with a few very fine artists here during the warm months. Plein-air artists meet the nicest and most interesting people while painting outdoors. It doesn't make any difference where we go, there's always something wonderful to paint. I strive to stay loose and I think plein-air painting supports that effort. I also enjoy submitting to juried shows - VWS, Green Mountain Fine Art Exhibit, Southern Vermont Arts Center and VTICA. Getting accepted is always good for the ego!
I am one of the seven artists who exhibit at the annual "Vermont & Beyond" fine art show every February in the Weston Playhouse. In late July, our hub had its 3rd annual Weston outdoor fine art exhibit here in the village preceded by the 2nd annual plein-air "paint-out"( in South Londonderry) the day before. What a fun day painting along the West River Trail!
I studied commercial art in college (Iowa State University) and was encouraged to continue pursuing watercolor. My professor said, "keep at it and maybe by the time you're 65 you'll be a descent painter." At the time I thought this guy was crazy, but, guess what! He was so right. I got married and raised five children. That of course took all my time. Now I feel so fortunate devoting as much of my day to painting as I wish, sometimes struggling with the medium, rejoicing over the happy accidents and never running out of subject matter. I love living in Vermont.
Three years ago Roy, (my significant other) and I, converted a shed to a summer gallery on our property. I'm open through Columbus Day here on Route 100 north just 1.2 miles from Weston village. I love having people stop in to buy or just to enjoy the art. The former is intermittent , but a sale is always a pleasant surprise. If you'd like to see more of my work go to: www.dianebell.org. Currently, several of my paintings hanging in the Maltex building on Pine Street, Burlington during this year's Art Hop.

Frank Francese
"Vermont Plein Air Waterolor Workshop", September 23rd -27th
The signature of a Frank Francese watercolor is his use of big shapes, color, color and more color! Frank bring a new style to the time tested combination of color and interesting shapes. His tyle employs the use of large brushes and a wet-in-wet method where much of the color mixing is done on the paper. This technique often produces brilliant, at other times subtle and always unique shades of color. "One must not overdo the detail in any painting. It should be used sparingly and with great thought..."
Paul Jackson
Watercolor Workshop, September 30th - October 4th
Recently featured as one of the "Master Painters of the World" in International Artists Magazine, Jackson's work has been on the cover of Artist Magazine many times. He is the author of "Painting Spectacular Light Effects in Watercolor" by Northern Light Books. The workshop will demonstrate the versatility of watercolor, as you learn to work in thin layers of washes to build luminous colors.
