What does watercolor painting contribute to the art scene in Vermont? That question was put to me the other day by a reporter working on a story about the VWS for the fall issue of "Best of Burlington". It caught me a little off guard I have to admit. I never really thought about it in that way before. I mean, I paint in watercolor because I fell in love with the medium. Many of us come to watercolor painting without traditional schooling in art and art criticism or art theory. I forget exactly how I answered that question, probably not very well; I may be reminded of my answer when the article comes out! Perhaps this question was intended as a softball by the reporter hoping to glean a quote that would resonate with the magazine's readers. A number of days later, however, I find the question still rattling around in my mind. The more I mull it over, the more I think it was a great question and an excellent jumping off point for further conversations among us. So, let me ask you, what does watercolor painting contribute to the art scene? How would you answer that? Does it have to? Should it? Is it just a medium or is it more than that? My knee jerk reaction is to say it is art and therefore it contributes to the art scene. But other than more art on the scene what else does it contribute? Are there any of us out there painting in watercolor to add to a conversation in society? Is anyone painting to shock a public we consider complacent, or painting as a form of protest against a policy or an institution? Is anyone painting to give voice to the oppressed, or painting with a manifesto? Maybe. Some of us may be, but my sense is that by far and away most of us are painting to share what we see and feel in the hopes that it will bring a joy and pleasure to the viewer, and to master the medium. So I have another question, is that enough? I had an art teacher once who at the end of the semester said to me, "So, you're an artist now, what are you going to say?" Just another question that rattles around my brain when I stop "doing" long enough to think a little bit on the meaning of my "doings". Respectfully, Mark
CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to Carole-Anne Centre and to Ann Pember who have recently attained signature status with the VWS having been juried into the SEABA Exhibition.
Also, congratulations to the recent award winners at the Green Mountain Watercolor Exhibition. Of the seven awards made, six of those honors went to VWS members. They are:

FALL MEETING - ATTENTION!
The Fall meeting will be held at the Quechee Club on October 20th and I need to find the most interesting person to be our keynote speaker/ demo artist! Who do you know who might be available and interested in spending a couple of hours telling us all about their work and showing us how they do it?! Please send me your suggestions ASAP.
Thanks so much, Claudia Carl, claudiaec@yahoo.com

NEWS FROM THE BOARD
Board Increases Hub Funding
The VWS Board of Directors decided to increase the yearly funding for Hubs. This decision indicates how seriously the Board wants to support and encourage Hub success. A formula was determined in an effort to be fair and conscious of Hub size differences. As in the past All Hubs will receive a basic yearly allotment for reimbursement of $300. In addition to the basic funding, Hubs will receive an increase of $10 per member - thus insuring Hubs with larger memberships will have adequate funding. The membership numbers will be based on a July 1 accounting for each hub and forwarded to the Board for inclusion in the next calendar year budget planning. The overall effect is to increase funding for all Hubs as well as insure that the entire VWS membership is provided with sufficient financial support.
Volunteer News
Many thanks to those of you who are stepping up to help with programs and exhibitions. We truly cannot have programs and exhibitions without you!! In addition, we are still actively looking for:
2 tech-help people: one for Mac users and one for PC users. These people would help others figure out (via telephone) how to resize jpg's, etc.
Board Members: A Director of Volunteers (who will work with Amanda for the time being)
Help with local Hub activities: Attending local activities, sharing ideas about what would support your artistic growth, helping your Point Person organizing an activity.
Please let me know how you would like to be involved!
Thanks so much, Amanda Amend, 652-9893 or amanda.amend@gmail.com

Vermont Institute of Contemporary Arts Update
With 134 excellent entries from 37 artists on their hands, VTICA has re-shuffled the deck to make more time and space available to the VWS in the upcoming "Out of Bounds" show by moving the show date to the months of December and January. In a recent correspondence with the VWS, Robert Sarly, VTICA's president, said "we had no idea that your members' response to the invitation to show their works here would be so overwhelming" Although our experience at the VWS has taught us that winter shows are a tough season to hold shows, VTICA is located within an area influenced by four major ski resorts, and we all know that not all the members of a family ski. Again, Robert Sarly " I understand that the weather may not be our friend throughout this entire exhibit period, but I must tell you that the VTICA location on the main access routes to the ski areas of Okemo, Magic, Bromley and Stratton has helped keep our visitor traffic up throughout past winters, and the quality of this collection should encourage even more visitors this year."
VTICA has a panel of three jurors and they convene this week and next if need be. If you are an artist whose work is selected for this show you will be contacted by VTICA shortly and provided with details and a VTICA contact person for coordination. VTICA will be managing all the day to day logistics from here on out. Please use this person to answer questions if you have them.
Additionally, VTICA has offered to be used as a platform for the VWS to promote its mission and to highlight some of its members through painting demonstrations and or speaking engagements.
If your work is selected for this show and you are interested in either speaking about or demonstrating watercolor painting please let me know.
Here are the new dates and times for the show.
Drop-off dates: 21-23 November
Opening date: 29 November 2013
Reception date: 30 November 2013, 5:30-8:00pm
Closing date: 19 January 2014 Pick-up dates: 19 (after 3pm)-21 January
Best Regards.

Frames: frames must be sturdy, in excellent condition, and must be professional quality. They must have picture wire attached to the back from which to hang the painting.
The following are not acceptable for VWS shows:
- Float frames
- Table top frames
- Damaged frames or frames that are disjointed at the corners
- Saw tooth hangers
- Duck tape, masking tape or other non-professional-looking materials used on backs of frames.
- Sloppy construction as seen from front or back
Persons accepting paintings at drop off are instructed to not accept paintings if they do not meet these guidelines. Thank you for your cooperation.
*Occasionally there are special shows where other guidelines apply, which will be described in that show's prospectus and/or other communications. Otherwise, the above guidelines will apply to all VWS shows including hub shows.

There is a model every Wednesday night from 6 - 9 PM, and every Sunday afternoon from 2 - 5 PM. Participants must register in advance by contacting Black Horse Art Supply at: 860-4972. Charles Norris-Brown is organizing discussion sessions for the VWS members who attend these sessions. You may work in whatever medium you wish, and there is no instruction.
Our hub is still in need of greater volunteer participation for both hub and full VWS activities. We'd love to have a volunteer (or two) to coordinate painting pickups and dropoffs, organize carpools to various activities and other small tasks. Without volunteer efforts, there will not be any activities, as VWS is an all-volunteer organization. Please let me know what you are willing to help with, and if there are other events that you'd like for our hub to offer. (email: Lynn.Cummings@uvm.edu)

Whenever I talk with my 86 year-old-mother, she often asks this question when she sees my paintings or hears about my work being accepted into an art exhibit, "I don't know where you get that from?" While growing up, no one in my family did art nor had any interest in art. I reflect on my mother's question with the thought that my interest in art must have come from the many times my mother colored with me in coloring books as a preschooler and the fact that my bricklayer dad built things. I believe these experiences gave some inspiration to me as a child to love to create things of my own.
I grew up in farm country in Southern New Jersey, and was put on a horse at the age of 4. I fell in love with horses and spent many hours creating drawings of them as a child. Basically, I am a self-taught artist even though I've taken many art classes from high school through college. Lacking self-confidence in my art abilities, I enrolled in Glassboro State College intending to teach biology then switched to elementary education where the students wouldn't be bigger than me! I taught elementary school for several years incorporating art projects into every subject that I taught. Eventually, I decided to make another change and became certified as an art teacher through Norwich University and the University of Vermont. Retiring in 2009 after teaching art for 19 years to grade levels K-12 with the last 15 years teaching high school art, I now focus on my own art production.
My husband, Lou, my one-year-old daughter, Gina, and I moved to VT in 1976; my son was born here two months later. Gina is a wonderful elementary teacher in Waitsfield, VT. She and her husband Michael have two boys with a baby girl due in July. My son, Damian, is a lawyer in Philadelphia, PA; he graduated in the arts from Penn State University then graduated from the University of PA Law School. Damian and his wife, Christina, have a three-month-old daughter. It was my children who encouraged me to become an art teacher, and I'm so grateful for their encouragement to pursue my art teaching certificate since art was truly what I was meant to be doing.
I work in mostly transparent watercolor, acrylic and pastel. I am primarily a portrait painter of people and things. My artworks are signed, "Rig" a name acquired in college and used by my close friends. I don't feel that I have a special gift or talent but I do love the creative process, the problem solving and seeing the final results of my efforts to produce artwork of things that are of interest to me. I love and appreciate artwork created by others and enjoy seeing the world around me in multiple ways through an artistic eye.

"Expressive Flowers, Faces and Figures", 4 day Watercolor Workshop August 5th - 8th
Fresh flowers in the studio will be the inspiration for the beginning of the workshop, progressing into portraits in watercolors. Through a series of painting exercises, students will develop a loose and more natural approach. "I love the qualities of watercolor, its fluid nature. To me, the interaction of artist with medium is like a dance, full of motion, feeling and expression."
Frank Francese
"Vermont Plein Air Waterolor Workshop", September 23rd -27th
The signature of a Frank Francese watercolor is his use of big shapes, color, color and more color! Frank bring a new style to the time tested combination of color and interesting shapes. His tyle employs the use of large brushes and a wet-in-wet method where much of the color mixing is done on the paper. This technique often produces brilliant, at other times subtle and always unique shades of color. "One must not overdo the detail in any painting. It should be used sparingly and with great thought..."
