Education and Outreach I am looking for good ideas to build the VWS education and outreach programs. Over the last six years or so we have been building a cash reserve which we will use to underwrite qualifying education and outreach projects. To qualify for VWS funds from this reserve the money needs to be spent on outreach or education and should not directly enrich our members. Here is an example; money from this reserve could be used to purchase watercolor materials which would be donated to students (non-members) to enhance their encounter with the experience of painting in watercolor, but the funds would not be used to pay a VWS member to teach a watercolor class. This distinction should be well within the boundaries of an appropriate non-profit charitable expense. Both Lynn Pratt and Claudia Carl teach children in adjunct school settings and have expressed an interest in this possibility. If you are currently or planning to teach watercolor painting in this type of setting and would be interested in upgrading the materials that your students will be using, or making those materials available at a reduced cost, or for free, please give me a call or send me an email and explain your idea, it may well be fund-able. Of course not all of us are teachers, or have a lot of additional time to take on something new. But let's be creative about this. Not all education and outreach needs to take a lot of time or cost anything. Here are a couple of other ideas I can think of that any of us could do. 1. Provide a link to an educational article on watercolor painting or painter that you feel is worth sharing. We can post the link on our website or Facebook page to share with the world. 2. How about a book review if you like to write, let us know about which watercolor texts inspire you and why we should read it. Maybe it is a biography, or a "how to do it" book. If the review is short enough we could run it as an article in Snippets. 3. Post a notice of a talk or demonstration that you may know about related to watercolor. The VWS website has a bulletin board for this. What ideas do you have? Email me, let's make it happen together. Mark

NEWS FROM THE BOARD
Board Increases Hub Funding
The VWS Board of Directors decided to increase the yearly funding for Hubs. This decision indicates how seriously the Board wants to support and encourage Hub success. A formula was determined in an effort to be fair and conscious of Hub size differences. As in the past All Hubs will receive a basic yearly allotment for reimbursement of $300. In addition to the basic funding, Hubs will receive an increase of $10 per member - thus insuring Hubs with larger memberships will have adequate funding. The membership numbers will be based on a July 1 accounting for each hub and forwarded to the Board for inclusion in the next calendar year budget planning. The overall effect is to increase funding for all Hubs as well as insure that the entire VWS membership is provided with sufficient financial support.
Volunteer News
Many thanks to those of you who are stepping up to help with programs and exhibitions. We truly cannot have programs and exhibitions without you!! In addition, we are still actively looking for:
2 tech-help people: one for Mac users and one for PC users. These people would help others figure out (via telephone) how to resize jpg's, etc.
Board Members: A Director of Volunteers (who will work with Amanda for the time being)
Help with local Hub activities: Attending local activities, sharing ideas about what would support your artistic growth, helping your Point Person organizing an activity.
Please let me know how you would like to be involved!
Thanks so much, Amanda Amend, 652-9893 or amanda.amend@gmail.com

Burlington/St. Albans Hub News
Plein Air Sessions
Annelein Beaukenkamp & Karen Casper have organized plein air painting sessions for this group. Hub members may bring an artist friend, if you wish, and you will need to register with Annelein or Karen. Minimum of 6 per session required.
Saturday August 24. Essex New York
Saturday October 5th. Shelburne Museum
Details about these events are being emailed to all Burlington/St. Albans hub members.
Life Drawing/Painting
These sessions, which started as a hub activity last fall, have expanded and now are open to other artists in the community. Any artist can attend these sessions which now meet in the upstairs classroom at Black Horse Art, 277 Pine St., Burlington. There is a model every Wednesday night from 6 - 9 PM, and every Sunday afternoon from 2 - 5 PM. Participants must register in advance by contacting Black Horse Art Supply at: 860-4972. Charles Norris-Brown is organizing discussion sessions for the VWS members who attend these sessions. You may work in whatever medium you wish, and there is no instruction.
Our hub is still in need of greater volunteer participation for both hub and full VWS activities. We'd love to have a volunteer (or two) to coordinate painting pickups and dropoffs, organize carpools to various activities and other small tasks. Without volunteer efforts, there will not be any activities, as VWS is an all-volunteer organization. Please let me know what you are willing to help with, and if there are other events that you'd like for our hub to offer. (email: Lynn.Cummings@uvm.edu)
New Hampshire Hub
Kilton Library Show, June 1 - Sept 28, 2013. The New Hampshire Hub is excited about the opportunity to show their paintings in the West Lebanon, NH Kilton Library. NH Hub Paint Out scheduled for July 25, 2013. We will enjoy a beautiful old homestead amidst blooming gardens with Mt Sunapee views AND a gourmet lunch. NH Hub members need to contact Pam Dexter to be added to the participant list thus ensuring Ted will prepare lunch for all. Time and directions will be sent to all participants. Bye the way, lunch is being offered to us, no cost, due to the graciousness of Ted. We thank Bea Jillette for coordinating our event with Ted Nobili. It's going to be a beautiful day so check your calendars, NH Hub members and join us.
The NH Hub is having an Opening Reception for their "Watercolor Stories" show on July 1, 2013 from 5:00 - 7:00 PM in the Kilton Public Library, West Lebanon, NH. This show is a joint venture between our NH Hub and our neighboring White River Junction Hub. Eight artists from each Hub are participating. Everett Webber is responsible for arranging this opportunity with the Kilton Library. We also thank Mary Jane Morse who coordinated this show, from the Library side, along with Everett. Many VWS members were helpful in the planning and hanging of this show. I am particularly grateful to Kate Reeves, Carole Anne Centre and Nancy Dean who kept the energy going. The NH and the WRJ Hub invite all VWS members and friends to join us for light refreshments and artistic camaraderie at our opening.

White River Junction
The White River Hub met June 15th at the studio of Rebecca Gottesman
with a small but enthusiastic group. Our agenda was 'Share the Process' - a morning where each of us shared a personal technique in our watercolors. Cathy Finnegan had a wonderful loose wrist movement of holding her brush while Jeannie Lindheim demonstrated her washes of brilliant color. Kate Reeves' favorite snow scenes were done with a mesh screen where you blow the gouache thru the screen onto the painting. Jo Tate also shared her
loose technique of accenting the values and warm/cool colors to produce some exciting flower paintings. More food than we could eat, it was a fun morning and nice to meet new artists. We plan to have another gathering later this summer - date to be determined.

Janet Rogers
"Expressive Flowers, Faces and Figures", 4 day Watercolor Workshop August 5th - 8th
Fresh flowers in the studio will be the inspiration for the beginning of the workshop, progressing into portraits in watercolors. Through a series of painting exercises, students will develop a loose and more natural approach. "I love the qualities of watercolor, its fluid nature. To me, the interaction of artist with medium is like a dance, full of motion, feeling and expression."
Frank Francese
"Vermont Plein Air Waterolor Workshop", September 23rd -27th
The signature of a Frank Francese watercolor is his use of big shapes, color, color and more color! Frank bring a new style to the time tested combination of color and interesting shapes. His tyle employs the use of large brushes and a wet-in-wet method where much of the color mixing is done on the paper. This technique often produces brilliant, at other times subtle and always unique shades of color. "One must not overdo the detail in any painting. It should be used sparingly and with great thought..."
Paul Jackson
Watercolor Workshop, September 30th - October 4th
Recently featured as one of the "Master Painters of the World" in International Artists Magazine, Jackson's work has been on the cover of Artist Magazine many times. He is the author of "Painting Spectacular Light Effects in Watercolor" by Northern Light Books. The workshop will demonstrate the versatility of watercolor, as you learn to work in thin layers of washes to build luminous colors.

It is very exciting to have Holbein, USA as a VWS Partner. Being a Vermont based art supplier and full time supporter of arts and the artists who make them, it is a perfect fit for both of us. Please get to know Holbein and support them not only because they are one of our partners, but because they are a world leader in colors and mediums for artists. The Landgrove Inn is the premier, all-in-one lodging, dining and fun space in which to create, exhibit and learn. Check out the 2010 workshop schedule at Landgrove Inn, or call 802 824-6673. Tom and Maureen Checchia, owners. |
