Dear VWS members, Putting a Price on your work! Warning, if you find talking about money when it comes to art is gouache than you should probably skip this article. I still remember the first time I had to put a price on my work. I had just arraigned my first show in February of 2003 at a church I attended in Boston, it was a solo show and I was hanging 30 pieces. I had just spent slightly over 2,000 dollars to frame the work and pay for the reception, invitation post cards etc. I really needed to make that investment back so I priced my work reasonably after consulting a few painters I knew. My prices ranged from $250 to $450 with the largest and most expensive piece set at $900. (At the time I was matting and framing paintings for around $100.) The church suggested a rent for the space of 10% of the sales. Over time I have raised my prices as my confidence and my understanding of the market value for watercolors has grown. Being a signatory member of several watercolor societies has something to do with that, at least in my mind. My costs have increased as well, I now paint on 300lb paper and I spend twice as much on my glass and mats as I used to. In general I use a simple scale for pricing my work (framed) now of $400ish for a quarter sheet, $800 to $900ish for a half sheet, and $1,800 to $2,500ish for a full sheet of watercolor paper. For gallery commissions I usually figure out what I want to get paid and add their commission to it. If the total feels to high I decide if I can live with less. The whole subject of pricing is on my mind recently because I have just been commissioned to paint a house portrait. In order to discuss the size/cost of the painting with my client I needed to refine my pricing to some kind of a formula that we could use to discuss her options. What I did was to look at how I price my work minus the framing costs (she will be framing the painting on her own) and see if there was some proportion of size to cost that fit with my simple scale described above. The formula that I came up with was $5 a square inch of painted image. Using this formula we agreed to reduce the amount of foreground in the photo I had taken of her house thereby increasing the overall size without increasing the cost dramatically. My client was thrilled with this approach and it helped me focus the "story" of the painting on the house. Out of curiosity I went back to my records of my first show in 2003 to see what see what I charged for my first show per square inch of painted surface and not surprisingly it turned out to be just about half. Maybe this is helpful to you, perhaps not, take what you can use and ignore the rest. Respectfully Yours, Mark Nielsen

Each month we will feature a VWS member in this newsletter. We will start by introducing you to our hard-working Board of Directors, who all serve VWS as volunteers. Today we welcome our Co-Director of Exhibitions:
Lynn Cummings
Color has always been a big part of my world so it's no big surprise that my paintings are generally all about color. As a young child I helped my mom in her large, colorful flower beds, loved arranging cut flowers from our yard, and enjoyed endless hours fabric shopping. A big new box of Crayola crayons was the best gift I could imagine when I was little. I was the student who always volunteered to decorate the bulletin boards for my teachers.
Working as a nanny for several summers at a friend's family compound on Squam Lake, we often spent the days visiting art galleries and craft shops and it was there I fell in love with watercolor. My summer earnings were often spent on an original painting, even thought I wasn't yet old enough to drive!
In addition to my "bill-paying" jobs, I have worked as an interior decorator, clothing designer, quilt maker, and I have designed one of a kind pieces of furniture and jewelry.
Watercolor is a passion, a challenge, a solace and a source of complete frustration at times. I love teaching watercolor, drawing on the best of my best teachers. It is so exciting to see a student have a breakthrough or to encourage a new watercolorist to keep painting and enter a show.
Mostly I paint at my home in S. Burlington, where I am very lucky to have fantastic views of Lake Champlain, the Adirondacks, the Green Mountains, and my flower beds. My husband and I spent 3 - 6 months a year for 5 years traveling the US in our motor home, as well as many trips to the Caribbean, Mexico, Central and South America and once to Africa. Needless to say, my reference photo collection for my own paintings and for my students is extensive. One of the most exciting parts of travel is seeing the colors in a new landscape, such as the vermillion and new gamboge colored rock formations at Ghost Ranch, NM, summer home of Georgia O'Keefe, the hundreds of shades of green flying over rainforest in Colombia, the colors in a city market in Venice, or the colorful bills of toucans in Costa Rica. What would my world be without color?

Lyn DuMoulin
Lyn DuMoulin is having a solo exhibit at the Brandon Artist Guild in Brandon, Vermont, in May-June 2013. At least ten new works will be on display. Most of Lyn's work reflects the four seasons of the great north country. Her paintings often use water reflections of some very beautiful, isolated places where, as she says, God's only been to once! Favorite themes in her work are the bright colors of vibrant life, people doing things they love, and water reflections. Of course her favorite subject, people in canoes, will be in evidence. The work is intended to make you wish you were there. In addition she is presently seeking permission from friends who live in Brandon and are well known in the community to have their watercolor portraits hung as part of the show. This, of course, depends on the skill of the artist and the vanity of older community members who might not mind seeing reflected the marvelous mileage our faces wear after 50! We'll see how many watercolor portraits make it to the walls of the Guild!
The Brandon Artist Guild is located right on Route 7 as one travels through Brandon, don't blink!
Robert O'Brien
