Dear VWS members, It's official, the IRS has classified the Vermont Watercolor society a non-profit 501(c)3 (public charity). There is a good chance that you figured we already had that status. I did, but you would have been wrong just like I was. Thanks to the substantial efforts of Everett Webber, the VWS began to organize it's case to the IRS several years ago. We were chartered as a non-profit organization in the State of Vermont in 1995 (and still are) but that has no bearing on how the IRS classifies our organization and until this year they considered us a for-profit corporation! YIKES. A large amount of thanks are also due to Jan Olmstead who oversaw our application process and managed to get it submitted in October of 2011. We were assigned a reviewer and she had a number of questions for us. Jan organized the board to help document our responses with (unofficial) advice from Peter Land, Treasurer and we filed our responses. This was followed with numerous phone conversations between myself (I was in the process of taking over as president) and our reviewer to negotiate acceptable terms. In the end, we agreed to a new policy that I address below. In return the IRS agreed to drop their demand that we not sell our work at VWS exhibits. Our non-profit status was granted in January of 2013 and is retroactive to the filing date of October 28th 2011. This effort was a major priority for the board and required a sustained effort to see it through. A special thank you goes out to Peter Land who filed corporate taxes on behalf of the VWS for the years 2010 and 2011 without charge to fulfill our responsibilities to the IRS in the breach. The New Policy: In our negotiations with our reviewer at the IRS we agreed to offer access to VWS exhibits and to our two annual meetings (spring and fall) free of charge to those members who could not afford the fees to participate. The VWS will use the honor system to determine members level of financial need. We will see with time what the impact is to our society but I suspect that it will mean we have higher levels of participation and that will be a good thing. On another topic, the board agreed to go back to you, our members to poll you on your opinion on a previous decision by the board to not include the VTICA "Out of Bounds" show among the shows that count toward Signatory status in the VWS. A sub-committee of board members was charged to write and disseminate the survey. It was sent out to all members who were current in their dues (176 members). The results are shown below. Should the "Watercolor Out of Bounds" show count towards signatory membership in the VWS? |

Based on this survey the board decided at our regular meeting on April 6th to let its previous decision stand, the VTICA show will not count toward signatory status. That does not mean that we are not endorsing or encouraging you to be experimental in your art or pursue the outer bounds of your creativity, we are. We hope that you will all take up this unique challenge and use it to explore your art-making in new ways. It is a perfect opportunity and the show will offer tremendous exposure. Respectfully Yours, Mark Nielsen
VICE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Some of you have asked just what a Vice President does within the VWS? The VP works closely with the President and fulfills responsibilities as needed within the Board structure. In addition, the VP takes on a special project of long term benefit to the VWS. My project is to establish committees to help the directors of Programs and Exhibitions. I also will be filling in the VWS member database with members' volunteer interests. We have information for about half of our members. The rest of you will be hearing from me shortly!
2013 MEMBERSHIP DUES
2013 membership dues are due! The VWS membership year begins in January of each calendar year. Members who have not yet paid dues for 2013 are considered delinquent and are not eligible to participate in VWS sponsored exhibitions, events, workshops or meetings. Memberships that remain delinquent for one year, will be terminated along with Signature Member Status, if obtained.
SPRING MEETING
The Spring Membership Meeting was a great success. Thank you Claudia Carl for organizing, Patrick Kennedy for demonstrating, and John Bates from Black Horse Art Supply for attending and supporting the event!

Board Members: A Director of Volunteers (who will work with Amanda for the time being)
Help with local Hub activities: Attending local activities, sharing ideas about what would support your artistic growth, helping your Point Person organizing an activity.

Realism Through Design
In this new offering, John will share his approach to painting the urban scene in watercolor. John will help participants in all aspects of painting a representational cityscape or town scene - choosing the subject, adding mood and creating emotional content, lighting the scene for dramatic effect, using photo reference in a meaningful way and most importantly, strengthening and enhancing representational painting through design. The workshop will include demonstrations, critiques and lots of one-on-one individual help. Whether you have never tried painting cityscapes or are an experienced urban painter, this workshop will be an invaluable opportunity to gain new painting insights.

This is a new section where hubs can share information about events.
Burlington/St. Albans Hub News
Critique Groups
We are starting several critique groups, which will meet in 2 or 3 locations so our hub members can meet closer to their homes. Five members met on April 3 in S. Burlington and this group will be taking turns hosting future critique meetings in our homes. The next meeting for this group will be on June 5 at Wake Robin in Shelburne.
Nancy Stone will be heading up a group which will meet in the Williston area, first meeting to be in September. Please stay tuned for further information about this group.
If someone is willing to organize a group in the northern part of our hub - Essex, St. Albans, Fairfax, wherever, please contact me (Lynn.Cummings@uvm.edu) and I'll send an invitation out to the whole hub.
These groups are a great way to meet other VWS members in a supportive atmosphere, get feedback and ideas about your paintings, and are a chance to see what others are working on and talk about upcoming shows.
Abstract Collage Workshop
Remember how much fun it was to finger paint in kindergarten? That's the sort of fun eleven members had at this creative anything-goes collage workshop, instructed by VWS member Marni McKitrick on April 10. Marni treated us to a fabulous show of many of her own collages, did a demo using various gel mediums, adhesive ground, rice papers, etc. to show how she approaches collage-making, then we were on our own.
This workshop gave many of us ideas for making different types of works of art for the VWS September show at VT ICA in Chester.
Plein Air Events
Two hub members are organizing places and dates for upcoming plein air painting. As soon as I receive their ideas I will pass them along to the hub members.
Life Drawing/Painting
These sessions, which started as a hub activity last fall, have expanded and now are open to other artists in the community. Any artist can attend these sessions which now meet in the upstairs classroom at Black Horse Art, 277 Pine St., Burlington. There is a model every Wednesday night from 6 - 9 PM, and every Sunday afternoon from 2 - 5 PM. Participants must register in advance by contacting Black Horse Art Supply at: 860-4972. Charles Norris-Brown is organizing discussion sessions for the VWS members who attend these sessions. You may work in whatever medium you wish, and there is no instruction.
Our hub is still in need of greater volunteer participation for both hub and full VWS activities. We'd love to have a volunteer (or two) to coordinate painting pickups and dropoffs, organize carpools to various activities, help with the VWS June Juried Awards Show at SEABA, and other small tasks. Without volunteer efforts, there will not be any activities, as VWS is an all-volunteer organization. Please let me know what you are willing to help with, and if there are other events that you'd like for our hub to offer. (email: Lynn.Cummings@uvm.edu)

Each month we will feature a VWS member in this newsletter. We will start by introducing you to our hard-working Board of Directors, who all serve VWS as volunteers. Today we welcome our Co-Director of Exhibitions:
Rebecca Gottesman
Today I have the privilege of being the Artist in Residence at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. I get to work one on one with patients and their caregivers bringing them art activities such as watercolor and beading. It relaxes them, relieves their pain for a while, and makes their time go by faster while in the hospital. Some of them are so turned on creatively, they even continue with it outside of the hospital. I have been doing this part time work now for the last 4 years and love it! I never imagined myself working in a hospital setting. My million dollar question to those who are too ill to play and are not up for it is: "If you could be any other place than here in the hospital, where would you be?" That question always brings a smile to everyone's face. Listening to their descriptions, I paint their special place in watercolor - right by their side. They get to watch it grow, one brush stroke at a time. They claim it is like magic. The best part is I get to give it to them when I am through. I love that! How did I get here?
My mother says when I was 1 year old I was drawing on the walls. I was always the kid who could draw and make stuff out of nothing. At first I wanted to be a sculptor, which brought me to Syracuse University's School of Fine Arts. That brought me to Rome Italy with Tyler School of Art where I got to study art and history on location. It was a fabulous experience! I graduated 1980 with a BFA in Painting and Ceramics. Then the question was - how to continue to make art outside of the school environment?
I married Eric, my college sweetheart, and I would say that his vision and support of me as an artist has been my greatest blessing. We have 2 beautiful daughters who have flown the nest. It was while being a mother of young children that I learned how to paint in watercolor. It was a clean medium that I could work with while having the children around. I continued to work in pastel and oil and started teaching classes 20 years ago at AVA in Lebanon NH. Eventually, I got my own studio at the Tip Top Building in White River Junction. Now, in my studio, I teach all kinds of classes in watercolor, pastel, and oil. I like changing mediums. It keeps me on my toes. Since working at Dartmouth Medical Center, and getting involved with VWS I have focused mostly on watercolor. Making paintings with patients on the spot from their descriptions has been a wonderful practice for me as an artist in painting and letting go of it. I always say one painting leads you to the next one, one step at a time. Practice, practice, practice and the rest will come.

My submission, "Beloved", was juried into the
Small Works Show at The Bennington Center for the Arts to be held May 11 through December 22, 2013. The opening reception weekend for this show as well as Impressions of New England and Art of the Animal Kingdom will be June 15 and 16 and will include events and lectures. Check out their website:
Lyn DuMoulin
Lyn DuMoulin is having a solo exhibit at the Brandon Artist Guild in Brandon, Vermont, in May-June 2013. At least ten new works will be on display. Most of Lyn's work reflects the four seasons of the great north country. Her paintings often use water reflections of some very beautiful, isolated places where, as she says, God's only been to once! Favorite themes in her work are the bright colors of vibrant life, people doing things they love, and water reflections. Of course her favorite subject, people in canoes, will be in evidence. The work is intended to make you wish you were there. In addition she is presently seeking permission from friends who live in Brandon and are well known in the community to have their watercolor portraits hung as part of the show. This, of course, depends on the skill of the artist and the vanity of older community members who might not mind seeing reflected the marvelous mileage our faces wear after 50! We'll see how many watercolor portraits make it to the walls of the Guild!
The Opening reception will be May 3 from 5-7 PM at the Brandon Artist Guild. There will be refreshments and for any VWS artist who comes through our doors the warmest possible welcome. The Brandon Artist Guild is located right on Route 7 as one travels through Brandon, don't blink!
Robert O'Brien

Please get to know Holbein and support them not only because they are one of our partners, but because they are a world leader in colors and mediums for artists.
