Dear VWS members, Balancing Act - If you're anything like me finding time to actually paint can seem almost hopeless. I am really bad at the balancing act, or maybe the other way of putting it is I am really good at getting everything else done. But this last month I had a minor personal victory, I actually got going on a painting, FINALLY. Even more hopeful (in my case), I think I have hit on a vein of interest that I would like to pursue for a series of paintings and I can feel the old desire to set the other things aside and get back to painting kicking in. That does not mean that I am about to set aside my duties to the VWS however. This month I signed the VWS up for a General Liability Insurance Policy and we will be buying a Directors and Officers insurance policy shortly. With these two policies in place both the VWS as an institution and those who serve it as directors and/or officers for the VWS are protected from things that we hope will never happen but were previously at some level of risk should they have come to pass. With these two policies in place it should be a lot easier for the cautious VWS member to consider service on the board without having to fear that they are placing their personal possessions or savings at risk. It will also help to protect all our members who might want to organize a Hub event or help out with painting transportation without having to worry about what would happen if someone got hurt or paintings got damaged or stolen. Also, your board members are starting to get organized for our April 6th board meeting that is just ahead of our statewide Spring Event/Meeting, (if you have not signed up yet please do not delay, April 28th is just around the corner) in Middlebury VT. Finalizing the details for this event is the main item on our agenda for the April 6th meeting. Speaking of balancing acts, for the last three or four years I have made the name tags for our spring and annual meetings. Now that I actually do stuff for the organization I would like to hand off the name tag task to someone else. Are there any volunteers out there? It's not that bad and gives you a chance to meet our members and connect names and faces at the reception table. Just email me if you want to take this on for a couple of meetings, mjnart.nielsen@gmail.com. I thought I would share my recent painting "Working Landscape" 18"x 27" Best Wishes, Mark Nielsen, President

Realism Through Design
In this new offering, John will share his approach to painting the urban scene in watercolor. John will help participants in all aspects of painting a representational cityscape or town scene - choosing the subject, adding mood and creating emotional content, lighting the scene for dramatic effect, using photo reference in a meaningful way and most importantly, strengthening and enhancing representational painting through design. The workshop will include demonstrations, critiques and lots of one-on-one individual help. Whether you have never tried painting cityscapes or are an experienced urban painter, this workshop will be an invaluable opportunity to gain new painting insights.

Each month we will feature a VWS member in this newsletter. We will start by introducing you to our hard-working Board of Directors, who all serve VWS as volunteers. Today we welcome our Director of Programs and Education:
Claudia Carl
Art has been a part of my life since I was born. Having two artists as parents there was always something creative going on in the house and my parents made sure the 5 of us kids also experienced all that NYC had to offer in the way of museums, theater, and all forms of creativity. I graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology and worked for a bit in the textile industry before moving to the bay area. Next I came back east with a husband and lived on Nantucket for a few years. At this time I was making quilts and working in the Property Management/ Guest House business, starting a family and still being inspired by my parents' creativity.
In the 80's I moved to Vermont where I continued to be part of the B&B business until divorce redirected me to the Greenhouse and Gardening business. Now surrounded by beautiful flowers, which I have loved to paint since my F.I.T. days, I started taking watercolor classes. This has changed my view of life and my surroundings. Everything I see as I drive around Vermont has the potential to be the next painting. I still have an incredible day job helping to manage an estate in Cornwall and I get to paint the flowers that I help to grow and also the incredible scenery that are the views.
I was introduced to the Vermont Watercolor Society in 2009 and found my tribe. What a great group of talented people who are inspiring and fun to paint with! It has been a pleasure to have the experiences with the workshops and the shows and the plein air painting and potluck dinners. To know that I have the rest of my life to grow as an artist and to participate in activities with this ever changing group of artists is all I could ask for. Happy Painting Everyone!

Lyn DuMoulin
Lyn DuMoulin is having a solo exhibit at the Brandon Artist Guild in Brandon, Vermont, in May-June 2013. At least ten new works will be on display. Most of Lyn's work reflects the four seasons of the great north country. Her paintings often use water reflections of some very beautiful, isolated places where, as she says, God's only been to once! Favorite themes in her work are the bright colors of vibrant life, people doing things they love, and water reflections. Of course her favorite subject, people in canoes, will be in evidence. The work is intended to make you wish you were there. In addition she is presently seeking permission from friends who live in Brandon and are well known in the community to have their watercolor portraits hung as part of the show. This, of course, depends on the skill of the artist and the vanity of older community members who might not mind seeing reflected the marvelous mileage our faces wear after 50! We'll see how many watercolor portraits make it to the walls of the Guild!
The Opening reception will be May 3 from 5-7 PM at the Brandon Artist Guild. There will be refreshments and for any VWS artist who comes through our doors the warmest possible welcome. The Brandon Artist Guild is located right on Route 7 as one travels through Brandon, don't blink!
