Dear VWS members, Three cheers to our board and our point people who are working overtime to bring all sorts of opportunities to you. How nice it is to be able to pick and choose what things we want to participate in. It is a cornucopia. And did you, the VWS membership, realize that you make all that work worthwhile by your willingness to participate? This year I hope to encourage every one of you to reach a little outside your comfort zone and extend yourselves by participating or volunteering for something that might normally be so easy to pass up. Please do bother to email us and let us know what you're thinking. Go ahead and pick up the phone and call your point person sometime. Offer a little encouragement, maybe some help. Together, in this way, we can make our institution even more vibrant and fulfilling. Speaking of participating a little bit....If you're looking to fill a "critical" role in the VWS please consider our need to fill our Director of volunteer's position. We can come up with ways to make due but it would be so much better to not have to! This job is such a great way to get to know your fellow VWS painters. If you are wondering what the job involves please do not hesitate to call me or the very capable Amanda Amend (former director of Volunteers) and we would be happy to fill you in. In fact, I encourage you to inquire. Respectfully Yours. Mark Nielsen, President
2013 MEMBERSHIP DUES
2013 membership dues are due! The VWS membership year begins in January of each calendar year. Members who have not yet paid dues for 2013 are considered delinquent and are not eligible to participate in VWS sponsored exhibitions, events, workshops or meetings. Memberships that remain delinquent for one year, will be terminated along with Signature Member Status, if obtained.

Please take a moment to respond to a short survey about our plans for juried exhibitions and signature status. The survey will be emailed in early March to all current VWS members.
SPRING MEETING
The Spring Membership Meeting will be held on Sunday, April 28th at the Middlebury Inn in Middlebury from 10AM to 3PM. We will have fun playing with paint and experimenting with techniques to create interesting effects and textures. Bring your sense of adventure and your enthusiasm! Let that inner child out!
Important! Please reserve your space ASAP and BEFORE April 22. I need to know how much food and art supplies to order!
The event registration form can be found on the VWS website: www.vermontwatercolorsociety.com/forms/vws-registration-forms.

Each month we will feature a VWS member in this newsletter. We will start by introducing you to our hard-working Board of Directors, who all serve VWS as volunteers. Today we welcome our new Vice-President:
Amanda Amend
I was born and raised in Fresno, California. I studied music in college and became a professional violinist and music teacher. After 15 years in that career, I felt it was time for a change. Not that I had "been there and done that", but I wanted a new area of experience. I had been raised with Spanish lessons from a young age, and I had studied abroad in Spain and minored in Spanish in college, so I entered a second career in teaching Spanish and English language learners. What great opportunities that career path provides! My husband and I moved to Spain, where I was the Coordinator of English Studies in a language school in Seville (The Center for Cross Cultural Studies, which also provides Elderhostel programs which some VWS members have attended). Then it was back to the U.S., to Vermont of all places, to teach Spanish at Saint Michael's College, and then to a university in Mexico to teach intercultural communications. College teaching may seem like a very cushy job, and it does allow a lot of flexibility, but it also is all-consuming. All I did was think about Spanish grammar, how to teach it, and how to motivate students. During my summers off, I planned for the next year and did research. One night about eight years ago, as I was tearing my hair out over the pluperfect subjunctive (no, you really don't want to know what that is), it came to me that I needed a hobby! A night class in drawing and painting caught my eye, and I became hooked on art. At first it was just an occasional dabbling, but in 2007 I decided to learn to paint in watercolor. By that time another 15 years had gone by, and... it was time for another change. I retired from Saint Michael's in 2010, and now my life is largely watercolor and you, the VWS. What will these next 15 years bring??!!! "Carmona" by Amanda Amend

On Sunday Feb. 17th the White River Hub met for an excellent talk and demonstration on how to photograph your artwork and prepare your files for VWS shows given by Rebecca Gottesman's husband, Eric. Nine people attended and enjoyed a delicious potluck at Rebecca's studio. We discussed future events and desires with many good ideas. A meeting in May is planned in which members can bring some of their work and demonstrate, if they wish, how they paint.

Robert O'Brien
I will be teaching a workshop this summer in Southern France at Domaine du Haut Baran from June 15th through the 24th. Haut Baran is a beautiful restored farm in the hills about the Lot River Valley in the heart of the Cahors wine country. There will be five days of painting instruction plus tours to various sites in the area. I call it an "art vacation". For more information contact me at (802) 263-9394. Their website is www.hautbaran.com.
I will be giving a watercolor demonstration at the New England Watercolor Society's annual meeting in Boston on March 17. For more information go to www.newenglandwatercolorsociety.org. My painting "Emily" won an Honorable Mention at this years New England Watercolor Society's juried Signature Members show in Boston.
Claudia Carl
Jan Olmstead and I went to the Landgrove Inn on Monday afternoon to deliver the framed painting that Alvaro Castagnet gave to Tom and Maureen after the workshop this past October. In appreciation for being such wonderful hosts at their Inn, the Vermont Watercolor Society had the painting of the Frisker Farm framed by Brian Ladeau at Otter Creek Frame Shop in Middlebury, Vt. Alvaro gave us a clear set of directions for creating the finished results that would closely resemble the look he gets from the paintings he has framed and we are all very pleased with a job well done! Thank you Brian! The Landgrove is working on painting and getting the Gallery Hall ready to hang all the paintings they have been collecting from the different Artists who have taught workshops at their "Inn View" studio over the years. It will be a great display that we will all get to view as we attend workshops there in the future. They have a great line up this year including the Linda Kemp workshop in September which I am excited to be attending. Check them out online at www.landgroveinn.com.
Note: In the last Snippetts I forgot to give credit to Kate Reeves who was in fact THE person who did the wonderful job of collecting the art and having it hung up at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock center. Just spoke to Larry and Roberta Coffin who visited the show last week and they were very impressed to see all the paintings from such a talented group.

Jean Cannon
Two of Jean Cannon's watercolor nudes have been accepted in a show in Tampa, Florida called Nude Nite! The paintings grew out of figure sessions in Burlington organized by VWS member Charles Norris-Brown.
Jean will be teaching a beginning watercolor class through OLLI (Osher LIfe Long Institute) at UVM on Tuesday nights beginningMarch 5th. Contact OLLI for information.
Lyn DuMoulin
Lyn DuMoulin is having a solo exhibit at the Brandon Artist Guild in Brandon, Vermont, in May-June 2013. At least ten new works will be on display. Most of Lyn's work reflects the four seasons of the great north country. Her paintings often use water reflections of some very beautiful, isolated places where, as she says, God's only been to once! Favorite themes in her work are the bright colors of vibrant life, people doing things they love, and water reflections. Of course her favorite subject, people in canoes, will be in evidence. The work is intended to make you wish you were there. In addition she is presently seeking permission from friends who live in Brandon and are well known in the community to have their watercolor portraits hung as part of the show. This, of course, depends on the skill of the artist and the vanity of older community members who might not mind seeing reflected the marvelous mileage our faces wear after 50! We'll see how many watercolor portraits make it to the walls of the Guild!
The Opening reception will be May 3 from 5-7 PM at the Brandon Artist Guild. There will be refreshments and for any VWS artist who comes through our doors the warmest possible welcome. The Brandon Artist Guild is located right on Route 7 as one travels through Brandon, don't blink!
Don Dalton
Don Dalton had two paintings accepted into the " Pictures at an Exhibition" show at Symphony Hall in Boston. This show is a collaboration between Symphony Hall and the Copley Society. The Boston Symphony Orchestra will be performing Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, for which Copley Society artists created original art that complements the suite's movements. The exhibition dates are March 6 - April 13, 2013.
Maisie Crowther
Has anybody seen a green notebook?! Maisie Crowther assembled a green, 3-ring binder which is a scrapbook of show postcards and meeting programs from the early days of the VWS. It is one-of-a-kind, and it has gone missing. She thinks it may have been left at a meeting a few years ago or passed around among VWS members. Did anyone pick it up for safe keeping? If you have or know of this binder, please contact Maisie at mbcrowther@gmail.com. Thank you!
Amanda Amend Amanda Amend's work will fill the walls of Mirabelle's Café in Burlington, Vermont, for the month of April. Several of these piece are "inspired by Alvaro"-- done after the Alvaro Castagnet workshop and reflecting his maxim, "Don't paint what you see! Paint how you feel about what you see." Please stop by!
