"Seed is the source of life and the first link in the food chain. Control over seed means control over our lives, our food and our freedom."
-Dr. Vandana Shiva

October is one of the best months to shop at Harvest Market thanks to Non-GMO Month and Fair Trade Month (plus, lots of Specials!). We are dedicated to educating our community, our customers and ourselves about the perils of genetic modification and, alternately, the benefits of food that is Organic, Fair Trade, and Non-GMO Project Verified. You can feel empowered to avoid genetically modified foods by choosing items that are either:

Certified Organic (look for one of several certifications)

- OR -

Non-GMO Project Verified

In October, we also get to celebrate the wonders of fermentation at the Kennett Square Fermentation Festival, followed by Second Saturday in Hockessin, when we'll be hosting our own Fermentation on Wheels workshop in our parking lot. Look in the Events section below for more exciting activities this month that honor all the things we love about food--and why we want to keep it safe and healthy for all.

We've Got Your Back
Harvest Market is a Supporting Retailer of the Non-GMO Project and will donate 5% of store sales to this organization on October 25.
Concerned about GMOs?
Your Grocer's Got Your Back
By Chris Keefe, The Non-GMO Project

So you'd like to avoid GMO foods, but you're not sure where to begin. You know that a lot of our food contains genetically engineered ingredients, and let's face it - no one has the time to research their entire menu these days. There's good news, though: your grocer's got your back.

While your experience at the store starts in the aisles and ends at the checkout, many important decisions are being made behind the scenes. Most natural products retailers maintain policies and quality standards that help ensure the products on their shelves meet specific criteria. The stores that don't have formal policies often have a committed "buyer" who has their customers' best interests in mind when making product selections.

The bad news - few, if any, grocery stores in the US and Canada are truly GMO free. In the face of widespread GMO contamination, retailers are doing their best to combat an unsavory reality: 80% of conventional packaged foods in North America contain GMOs. With consumer demand behind them, even conventional supermarkets have made simple pledges not to purchase genetically engineered salmon.

The leaders on the issue, though, are helping clean up our food system one bag of corn chips at a time. To quote Jim Someck of Jimbo's... Naturally, "I'm not doing this for our bottom line, but for my kids and kids all over the world. Our shoppers demand transparency and have a right to know what's in their food." Jimbo's is one of many stores that have stopped stocking any new products that contain GMOs.

Harvest Market has made its own non-GMO commitment, and staff are working hard to provide you with reliable non-GMO choices. With your local market on your side, and thousands of others sharing their commitment, we're making amazing progress toward the non-GMO future many of us imagine.

When you go grocery shopping, keep choosing certified organic and Non-GMO Project Verified products. Supporting non-GMO vendors helps your favorite store make the transition smoothly and means you're bringing home the best food for yourself and your family.
