Local Farm Profile
Delaware Hydroponic Tomatoes
Dover, Delaware

A Delaware native, tomato grower Barry Trimmer has been in the hydroponic tomato growing business for the last 18 years. From his greenhouse in Dover, he grows around 900 plants, including three varieties, as part of this one-man enterprise. His greenhouse uses state-of-the-art computer equipment to create a controlled environment ideal for these pesticide free tomatoes. He uses bug screens for ventilation, plus his cat patrols for rodent control. Each plant produces approximately 40 pounds of fruit and grows up to approximately 30 feet long!

Barry uses bug screens for ventilation, plus his cat patrols for rodent control. Each plant produces approximately 40 pounds of fruit and grows up to approximately 30 feet long! The tomatoes are harvested when ripe, washed, and then packed the day before delivery. It's hard to get a product much fresher than that! Hydroponic tomatoes are really juicy and great for any type of cooking recipe. Did you know that no tomato should be refrigerated because it loses its taste? Hydroponic tomatoes contain less acid, making it safer for your stomach.

New Products for Summer
Rastelli Organic and Grass-Fed Meats

In our quest to provide our customers with the most sustainable and humanely-raised grass-fed meats, we are happy to announce our newest fresh meat from Rastelli. Rastelli USDA Certified Organic Grass Fed Beef comes from cattle that are all raised on organic pastures and never received antibiotics or growth hormones. Harvest Market now stocks Rastelli's restaurant-quality Ribeye, Top Sirloin, and Tenderloin Steaks, as well as Beef Patties. Cattle are humanely raised, with the majority of life in open pastures. This process ensures that you are getting the most pure and delicious organic grass-fed beef available.
Women's Bean Project BBQ & Spice Rub

Uncle Bob's BBQ Rub and Malaysian Spice Rub are new ways to spice up your meat, fish, poultry and veggies. Uncle Bob's BBQ Rub adds the traditional tastes of a simmering Southwest barbeque. The Malaysian Spice Rub is a striking blend of spices that will give meat and vegetables an exotic flavor. Spices included in the mix are chili powder, coriander, cinnamon, cumin and curry powder.
You can use both of these mixes as a dry rub on meat or fish in preparation for grilling, baking or pan roasting. Pat meat dry before applying rub to both sides. Mix with olive oil to create a paste that sticks well to any meat. Grill or saute after coating.
Farmhouse Kraut
Smoked Jalapeno

Don't miss Farmhouse Cutlure's spicy Latin kraut! Smoked Jalapeņo Kraut is the California remix of El Salvadore's curtido, a traditional cabbage dish normally made with fermented pineapple juice. The fine fermenters at Farmhouse Culture have replaced the tropical zing with smoky heat, adding fresh smoked jalapeņos to a blend of raw cabbage, carrots, onions, and crunchy radish. Taste real outdoor-grilled flavor in every jar of this kraut.

Pile it onto your nachos, in a grilled cheese sandwich, rolled into a burrito or as a condiment with any Latin dishes. For fun kraut recipe ideas, click here.

Bee-ware

A master beekeeper in Florida used to produce 100 gallons of honey a year. Last year? Fifteen. Companies like Monsanto, Bayer and Syngenta are the biggest offenders when it comes to the honeybee die-off. But consumers can still do something to help. Meet the beekeeper from Florida in this short video and tell your U.S. Representative to support the Saving America's Pollinators Act (H.R. 2692)!

Food for Thought

It's no surprise that we are big fans of grass-fed, organic butter at Harvest Market. (We currently stock at least 3 varieties, salted and unsalted).  Lately, we've watched with glee as the craze for low-fat, high sugar products decreases, and the mainstream media extols fats like butter as part of a balanced diet. This article by Dr. Mercola talks about how processed foods are the real culprit of heart disease in the United States, and that good quality butter, among healthy fats like avocado, coconut oil, olive oil, flaxseed oil, fish oil, raw nuts, raw dairy, grass-fed meats, pastured egg yolks, are friends--not foes.
