Wild For Salmon
Bloomsburg, PA

Wild For Salmon is a local business that makes the highest quality fresh/frozen wild Alaskan sockeye salmon available to you at a good price. Owned and operated by Steve and Jenn Kurian of Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, Wild For Salmon began with an adventurous trip to Alaska in 2002 to do some commercial salmon fishing. Following Steve and Jenn's first fishing excursion, they arrived home with two coolers of salmon for friends and family. This is when they quickly realized the uniqueness of the product and the possibilities that lie ahead. Since then, the Wild For Salmon has grown the business to serve individuals, buying clubs, local farm markets, restaurants, and health food stores.

Wild for Salmon just announced the arrival of their new boat (pictured above) called the Ava Jane, named after their daughter. Check out the building of the Ava Jane and see just how a salmon fishing boat is built in this short video from the Kurians.

June and July are busy months on the boat. The fishing season lasts approximately 5-7 weeks. Steve is the skipper of their boat, while Jenn, the first mate, and two other local men are deckhands. While on the boat, they listen to the satellite radio to hear the official fishing periods. As they catch the salmon they are kept in refrigerated holds, making sure the quality is preserved. Every 10 hours, the fish is offloaded onto a larger crab boat which takes the fish in for processing. It is quickly filleted, flash frozen, and vacuum sealed to capture the "direct from the boat" flavor. After fishing, the salmon is sent back to Pennsylvania where it is distributed to Harvest Market and other points of sale.

Fresh Catch Recipe
Salmon and Pineapple Kabobs

Ingredients:
1/2 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup mirin rice wine or rice vinegar
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 Tbsp minced garlic
2 Tbsp minced fresh ginger
1/4 cup minced green onions
2 Tbsp vegetable oil
Pinch chili pepper flakes
1 lb salmon fillet, rinsed, cut into 1 to 1 1/2-inch cubes
1 lb fresh pineapple, cut into 1 to 1 1/2-inch chunks
2 green onions, cut into 1-inch segments
8 bamboo skewers, soaked in water for at least 20 minutes before using

Instructions:
1. In a medium bowl, mix together the soy sauce, mirin or rice vinegar, and brown sugar until the sugar is completely dissolved. Add the fresh ginger, minced green onions, chili pepper flakes, and vegetable oil. Place the cubes of salmon in the bowl, coat completely with the marinade. Cover and chill for 1-2 hours.

2. Remove salmon from marinade. Place marinade in a small sauce pan and bring to a boil, simmer for 10 minutes, set aside.

3. Thread salmon, pineapple, and onion pieces on skewers. If using a grill, prepare grill for high, direct heat. Oil the grill grates. Place skewers on grill. Cover. If using an oven broiler, place on a rack on a broiling pan, so that the salmon pieces are 6 inches from the element. Turn after 2 to 4 minutes. Baste with reserved marinade. Cook for 2 to 4 minutes more, basting frequently, until salmon is just barely cooked through.

Wild Planet White Anchovies

Wild Planet White Anchovies are not your typical anchovies. Also known as boquerones in Spanish restaurants worldwide, Wild Planet's sustainably caught White Anchovies are smaller and more delicate in texture than a sardine, with a clean, mild flavor that tastes great straight from the can or added to a salad to a tapas platter. These nutritional powerhouses provide 35% of the recommended daily amount (RDA) for calcium and an average of 1,240 mg of EPA and 770 mg DHA. White Anchovies are available in Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Water in an easy open pull tab.

Wild For Salmon Sole, Rockfish, Black and Pacific Cod

Wild For Salmon is more than just salmon! They provide us with several types of whitefish, including Sole, Rockfish, Black Cod and Pacific Cod. Sole fillets are thin, and will cook up in minutes. Recommended to be prepared on the stove or in the oven.
Alaska Rockfish refers to a group of Alaska whitefish from one family of fish. All rockfish offer a mild and sweet tasting fillet and has a firm, meaty texture. Also known as sablefish or butterfish, Black Cod is a highly prized delicacy overseas. It is a delicate fish that has a rich, buttery texture, in part to its high omega 3- fatty acid content. Pacific Cod is known for its moist, firm texture and mild, slightly sweet flavor.
All portions come skin on and individually vacuumed packaged in our freezer.

Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch

The Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch program is recognized as the leader in creating science-based recommendations that help consumers, chefs and businesses choose seafood that is caught or farmed in ways that don't harm the environment. Recommendations indicate which seafood items are "Best Choices," "Good Alternatives," and which ones you should "Avoid.' Wherever you consume or purchase seafood, it pays to ask the question: "Do you sell sustainable seafood?" Other ways to make a difference:
- Choose seafood from the "Best Choices" or "Good Alternatives" lists when you dine out or shop.
Take Action: Divest Monsanto

As the manufacturer of Agent Orange, DDT, PCPs and dioxin, Monsanto's toxic legacy of harm to the environment and human health is without parallel. Now Monsanto owns patents on life and is genetically engineering the food that we eat. In the past 2 years alone, Monsanto has helped fund massive misinformation campaigns to the tune of $70 million to defeat GMO labeling.
Monsanto claims that GMOs and their weedkiller Roundup are perfectly safe. So why are they fighting GMO labeling in the U.S.? Unfortunately, if you have a retirement fund, 401K or mutual funds you could be profiting from Monsanto's toxic products.

It's Essential
Yoga Mat Cleaner

We do yoga to take care of our bodies, but there's something else that we mustn't forget to provide with a little TLC from time to time: our yoga mats. You can totally go out and buy a cleaner for your mat, like our new Zum Yoga Mat Spray, or you can make one yourself. The fun part about making this spray is that you get to play around with different ratios, and mix and match the types of oils you want to include in order to make your ideal scent.

Yoga Mat Cleaner Recipe:

1 cup water

¼ cup witch hazel

30 drops tea tree essential oil

40 drops lavender essential oil

Or any mixture of essential oils you like, including eucalyptus, orange, lemon, and rose.

Combine all ingredients in a glass spray bottle.

Spray Cleaning Instructions:

1. Spray your yoga mat cleaner liberally over the surface of your mat.

2. Wipe the yoga mat with a damp cloth and repeat on the other side.

3. Allow your mat to air dry, which should take about 5 to 10 minutes.

Note: Do not saturate your mat, as the oils can clog the pores of the mat. Let it dry thoroughly (preferably in the sun) before packing up.

Food for Thought

Having the highest vaccination rate and using the most vaccines mandated by law of any nation on earth, American children are among the sickest in the developed world. There are health risks associated with vaccines, and vaccines don't always work. Despite that, the editorial board of a national newspaper recently declared that you should not be free to make vaccine choices for yourself or your children. Read more here from Dr. Mercola
