"Live within your harvest."
-Persian Proverb

From the ground up, Harvest Market believes in supporting sustainable agriculture and the healthy fruits of noble labor. This month, we take stock of the numerous health, environmental and farmworker benefits of fresh, non-toxic produce as we celebrate National Organic Harvest Month. This encouraging list of the Top 10 Reasons to Support Organic Agriculture in the 21st Century extols several other great reasons to buy from farmers who steward our land, and our foodways, with care.

Organic Labels
Aaron Esh, September's Featured Local Farmer, presents an interesting example of the pro's and con's of the Certified Organic label and certification process. For years, Aaron and his family have gone through the lengthy and costly process of organically certifying their farm. Just this past year, Aaron announced that he was no longer certifying his farm products as organic, but that all his growing practices would remain exactly the same. We applaud Aaron for staying true to his sustainability commitment and his bottom line.

Some farmers who rely on local or direct sales have decided against organic certification because they can talk about their growing methods and answer their customers' questions and concerns directly, while other growers have opted out of certification of any type. Another approach is having your farm Certified Naturally Grown, a grassroots alternative to the Certified Organic label. Certified Naturally Grown (CNG) is a non-profit organization offering certification tailored for small-scale, direct-market farmers and beekeepers using natural methods. Look for more Certified Naturally Grown items in farmers markets where the label is becoming more common.

Fermentation Festival 2013
Harvest Market is pleased to sponsor the Fermentation Festival and encourage fermented foods in everyday cooking.
Part of celebrating the harvest is the challenge and reward of extending the season with preservation methods like canning, freezing and fermenting. Extend this year's harvest by attending our kimchi demonstration and other fizzy fun activities at the
Fermentation Festival in Kennett Square on Friday, October 4.

Happy National Organic Harvest Month!
Farm Profile
Esh Farm
The field crops at Esh Farm, including non-GMO corn.
Kirkwood, PA

Aaron Esh, who along with his wife, Rachel, and their family, supplies much of our eye-popping local produce during the summer season. Harvest Market also stocks preserved goods and cheeses (look for the Peaceful Valley Farm label) from the Esh dairy. We also carry their jars of basil tomato sauce, sauerkraut, pickles and pickled vegetables in our local food section.

For Aaron, growing organically was a natural extension of chemical-free farming practices instilled in Aaron by his father. To them, chemicals were unnecessary expenses. Why spray three acres of produce when organic methods work so well? Aaron also saw a strong need in the local marketplace for organic vegetables and fruits, and for eight years has been cultivating potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, broccoli, corn, tomatoes, melons, cucumbers, butternut squash, blueberries, raspberries, and other crops in rich, healthy soil.  Esh strawberries often sell out the day they arrive in the store.

Esh Blackberries
Aaron's blackberries make perfect pies and a nutritious addition to your morning smoothie.

Aaron and his family reside in Lancaster County, home to many Amish farmers who supply our region with fresh produce, dairy products and poultry. We are fortunate to live so near a place where traditional, low-impact farming practices turn out an abundance of delicious, nutritious foods.

Harvest Market is proud to offer a wide selection of produce from this gem of the countryside.  Esh Farm meets the "gold standard:" chemical-free and local is about as down-to-earth as food gets. While Aaron does not have a website, you can learn a little bit about Lancaster County sustainable Plain (and not-so-Plain) farmers here.

Old farming equipment still in use at Esh Farm.

We are thankful for all the farm-fresh products we receive from Esh Farm throughout the seasons. This time of year, why not try some of Aaron's sweet and hot peppers, topped with his grass-fed cheddar cheese, in this chili recipe supplied by our Produce Manager, John-Anthony? We know you'll enjoy it!

Recipe of the Month:
White Bean Chili
Recipe courtesy of John-Anthony Campanelli.

Ingredients

1 lb ground turkey or chicken Chili

2 limes

1/2 bottle India Pale Ale Beer

4 Tbsp high-heat oil

2 Tbsp butter

5 Tbsp cumin powder

2 Tbsp fish sauce

5 cloves garlic, minced

2 Tbsp soy sauce

2 yellow onion, minced

1 yellow bell pepper, minced

3 white bell peppers, minced

2 yellow jalapeo, minced

2 cans Cannellini beans

1 Tbsp cajun seasoning

1 Tbsp cocoa powder

2/3 cup sriracha hot sauce

3 Tbsp paprika

1 block extra sharp white cheddar

Salt and pepper, to taste

--

Have meat of choice in bowl before beginning. Squeeze 1 lime over the top, then add cocoa powder, cajun seasoning, and salt and pepper, to taste. Let sit, covered, in fridge, during first part of recipe.

On medium heat, add butter and oil to a pot. Then add onion and garlic, and let simmer for about 10-15 min. Squeeze the juice of 1 lime over mixture, add salt and pepper, to taste. Add soy sauce and fish sauce. Then add peppers, and let simmer for additional 20 min. Add cumin powder, and the India Pale Ale. Allow to simmer for 15 more minutes.

In a separate smaller pan, cook meat mixture. Add meat and beans to larger pot once cooked. Mix well, then bring to low heat. Shred block of extra sharp cheddar cheese and add to pot. Finally, add sriracha hot sauce. Turn off heat completely, and let sit, covered, for about 5-10 min. Mix well and serve.

Harvest Market Sponsors "Year of Coverdale"

Coverdale Farm
Presented in partnership with Harvest Market, the Delaware Nature Society is celebrating the
"Year of Coverdale". Coverdale Farm is DNS' educational farm and home to their Community Supported Agriculture (CSA).
As a teaching farm, Coverdale offers visitor interaction with resident livestock by hand milking a cow, collecting eggs, feeding sheep and pigs. In addition to animal husbandry, the farm utilizes over an acre of organic vegetable gardens and a professional teaching kitchen.

Coverdale's cooking classes are unique in the region. They offer participants of all ages a better understanding of where their food comes from -- and frequently the chance to harvest the very ingredients that they cook. Presented in partnership with Harvest Market, Coverdale's cooking classes are held in a new, state-of-the-art commercial kitchen.

Action Alert:
Stop the Dietary Supplement Labeling Bill
Supplement Bill

For the third time, Senators Dick Durbin and Richard Blumenthal are trying to pass the Dietary Supplement Labeling Act, S. 1425. The bill grants the FDA and the Institute of Medicine the power to compile a list of dietary ingredients that pose a potential health threat.

Since 1994, the Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) has done a more than adequate job protecting consumers largely due to supplement companies' compliance with, and support of, that system.

Put simply: At best, S. 1425 is a bad bill, albeit with good intentions. At worst, it uses parents' fear about what their children are consuming as an excuse to take another crack at imposing unnecessary regulations on the dietary supplement industry, which has demonstrated time and again its ability to ensure the safety of its products.

Take action now and tell your Senators: our supplements are safe - vote "NO" on S. 1425!
