The earth is what we all have in common.
- Wendell Berry

We will also have a veggie stamp activity for children and adults.
This month at Harvest Market, we are incentivizing you, our beloved customers, to do some "Spring Cleaning" in your health and beauty drawers. We have tons of health and beauty specials this month, including 20% off Dr. Hauschka cosmetics, making this the perfect time to recycle the old and bring in the new. To make your own all natural health and beauty products with simple ingredients, check out Leah Troiano's Cancer Health and Wellness website. Leah also writes an excellent monthly article in Grid magazine on how to eliminate toxins from your life by making your own cleaners and personal care products.
The article "Green Beauty" from April's edition of Remedies (one of those
awesome free magazines we provide at check out) explores how conscious personal care product choices help the planet, not to mention your body, too! As many of you know, reading labels on food and personal care products can become a full time job, so cut to the chase with the Environmental Working Group's Guide to Healthy Cleaning. EWG's free and informative guide inventories and rates the safety and toxicity of everyday household and personal care items. Once you discover this invaluable resource, and their other shopper guides, you won't look back--but you will definitely look twice before you buy anything that touches your skin. Also check out their food guides, such as the famous Dirty Dozen list, which profiles the top 12 fruits and vegetables to avoid.

Hillacres Pride Dairy
Peach Bottom, PA
Hillacres Pride Dairy was established in 2003 as an extension of the Arrowsmith family farm, Hillacres Jersey. The family farm is home to three generations who milk the cows twice a day. Cows are not treated with antibiotics or hormones and are grass-fed on pasture and fed forage grown on the farm. From their Herb and Chive Cheddar to their fresh Dragon's Breath Cheese, Hillacres Pride is well represented in Harvest Market's gourmet and local cheese refrigerator case.

"Hillacres Pride was born of the idea of providing the next generation an opportunity to experience the traditions of the family operation. Hail Merry
Miracle Tarts
Hail Merry Miracle Tarts are the one thing we can all/most agree on. Miracle Tarts "unearth the powers of coconut oil, one of nature's most remarkable plants." These sweet and savory dessert tarts are made with raw oils, namely extra virgin coconut oil, flavored naturally with fresh juices like Persian Lime and Meyer Lemon, then crusted with a combo of almond flour, raw coconut butter and coconut oil. Vegan, gluten-free and sweetened with organic raw agave nectar, palm sugar, and/or maple syrup, it takes just one bite for everyone to surrender to the taste of Miracle Tarts and say a "Hail Merry!"

Pure Indian Foods Ghee Demo
Saturday, April 27
11am-2pm
Ghee is a healthy, shelf-stable alternative to plain butter or other cooking oils. Golden colored ghee is prepared by melting and simmering unsalted butter until all the water evaporates and the milk solids settle at the bottom. The remaining butter oil is very stable, giving it a high smoke point which makes it an excellent choice to use for frying and sautéing. Pure Indian Foods, based in New Jersey, produces certified organic ghee using milk sourced from grass-fed, ethically raised cows. On April 27, we will have samples showcasing the many uses of ghee from 11am-2pm. Kate B., our resident "gheek", will be on-hand to answer any questions about the versatility and health benefits of this ancient, prized Indian butter.

Unlabeled Sweeteners in Milk? Make a Comment!
The International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) and the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) is petitioning the FDA to approve aspartame as a hidden, unlabeled additive in dairy products. While aimed principally at replacing sugar in flavored milks served to school children, the petition also asks for the right to put hidden artificial sweeteners in a host of dairy products including nonfat dried milk (always added to reduced-fat milks), yogurt, cream, half-and-half, sour cream, eggnog and whipping cream. Truly, no conventional dairy product will be safe if the petitioners get their way. If you're disgusted like we are, please take action here via the Weston A. Price Foundation's email newsletter.

"Paleo Stix from Steve's are like Slim Jim's without all the nasty ingredients. They're nitrate-free, gluten-free, and are made from beef from grass-fed, grass-finished cows raised without antibiotics or added hormones. We carry it in two flavors, original and spinach. I haven't tried the spinach but I heard both flavors taste the same. They make for a great snack when on the go!"

In early January, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released two proposed new food safety regulations of great significance to the sustainable agriculture community:

1. Produce Rule - standards for growing, harvesting, packing, and holding produce; and
2. Preventive Controls Rule - Good Manufacturing Practices for human food and Hazard Analysis and Risk-based Preventive Controls (HARPC) requirements for food facilities, including on-farm processing.
Both of these rules are part of FDA's implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), which President Obama signed into law on January 4, 2011. The Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture (PASA)'s recent Important Food Safety Update on legislative issues shows us the need to stay informed about looming food modernization laws that will affect on-farm processing and other regulations on farms. Check out PASA's Executive Director, Brian Snyder's new blog at www.writetofarm.com and get caught up on "The Food Safety Saga and Why It Matters". Another excellent resource in the evolving food safety regulation process is the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition, whose website provides a wealth of information and follow up actions.

(Many thanks to Delaware raw milk advocate and Harvest Market shopper Chad Snader for recently sharing PASA's Food Safety Modernization Act email with our Facebook fans. We encourage you to read and sign Chad's raw milk petition, here.)
P.S. We are pleased to report that YOU as Harvest Market customers helped forward PASA's mission by $950 as part of Harvest Market's 5% for PASA Day on 3/23. Thank you to all who shopped and made a difference!
